Landmark Group champions community health at 15th Beat Diabetes family event

Khaleej Times17-02-2025
As part of the UAE's Year of Community and in alignment with the 'Forward Society' pillar of 'We the UAE 2031 Vision', Landmark Group successfully hosted the 15 th annual Beat Diabetes family event, reinforcing its commitment to raising awareness about diabetes and promoting health awareness and proactive community engagement. The event, a core initiative under Landmark Group's Beat Diabetes programme, brought together around 16,500 Dubai residents with over 3,500 children at Za'abeel Park alongside key partners to champion a healthier future for the UAE.
The event was inaugurated by Renuka Jagtiani, chairwoman, Landmark Group, alongside Saeed Mohammed Hareb, secretary-general of the Dubai Sports Council, Dr Amer Al Zarooni, CEO, Al Jalila Foundation, among others. They were joined by representatives from across private and public sector partners, schools, and community groups, demonstrating widespread support for the cause of raising awareness of diabetes and early detection and prevention along with the importance of a healthy lifestyle across all generations.
Saeed Hareb, director general of Dubai Sports Council, said: "As we celebrate the Year of Community, I commend the remarkable success of the Beat Diabetes Family Event, which continues to unite and inspire people across the UAE on the cause of diabetes awareness and family wellbeing. This initiative reflects the strength of our shared commitment to fostering a healthier society as it places community wellbeing at the heart of its efforts. We firmly believe that an active lifestyle is essential to overall health and wellness and proudly reaffirm our support for this annual family initiative by Landmark Group, encouraging all residents to embrace fitness and proactive health management to reduce diseases and enhance quality of life."
As part of the Group's efforts to integrate health education into youth initiatives, Landmark Group collaborated with GEMS Education to launch the Superkidz Writing Competition and received over a thousand entries from budding authors in Grade 4 and Grade 5 across GEMS schools. With medical professionals in the UAE increasingly raising concerns over the rising prevalence of paediatric diabetes, and reports indicating that 24,000 children in the UAE were diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in 2024, the competition aimed to inspire students to explore themes of healthy living through storytelling.
Commenting on the event's impact, Nisha Jagtiani, group director at Landmark Group, said: "We are truly overwhelmed by the incredible support today's event has received from the UAE community, especially the participation from many children, people of determination, and families. Landmark Group is dedicated to advancing the Beat Diabetes initiative, emphasising the significance of regular diabetes testing and embracing a healthy lifestyle. The enthusiasm and engagement we witnessed today highlight how deeply initiatives like Beat Diabetes resonate with the community. This collective commitment inspires us to continue our mission to raise awareness and foster a healthier future for everyone."
The customary 2-kilometer walk served as a community rallying point, followed by several fitness, sports, educational activities and entertainment for families. Participants also benefitted from a range of free health services, including blood glucose testing through the 'Wellness on Wheels' program, provided by Al Jalila Foundation, which leads the giving mission of Dubai Health. Free influenza vaccines and nutrition consulting were provided by Emirates Health Services.
Dr Amer Zarooni, CEO of Al Jalila Foundation added: "At Dubai Health, we believe that prioritising patient well-being begins with empowering our community to take charge of their health. The Beat Diabetes initiative aligns with our focus on prevention, early detection, and patient-centred care, ensuring that every individual has the knowledge and resources to lead a healthier life. Through collaborations like this, we reinforce a shared commitment of fostering a future where health awareness translates into meaningful action, creating a lasting impact on individuals and families across the UAE."
Since 2009, Landmark Group has been a leading advocate for diabetes awareness and management, continuously evolving its initiatives to address the community's needs. With all proceeds from the Beat Diabetes Family Event going to Al Jalila Foundation to support the treatment of diabetes and related conditions, it serves as the culmination of year-round efforts under the Beat Diabetes campaign, reinforcing Landmark's commitment to fostering healthier lifestyles across the nation. As Beat Diabetes continues to grow, the Group remains uniquely positioned as a champion of awareness, prevention, and community well-being, embodying the spirit of the Year of Community.

The Ministry of Health and Prevention (MoHAP), in collaboration with the Supreme Council for Family Affairs in Sharjah and several government and private entities, has completed six major awareness stations as part of the 'Prevention of Heat Exhaustion' campaign. The initiative, taking place in Sharjah throughout July and August, coincides with the midday work ban and supports the Year of Community initiatives. Its primary goal is to protect workers and promote health awareness during the high summer temperatures. Now in its 14th edition, the campaign is held under the slogan 'Your Safety is Our Goal.' It focuses on educating workers about the dangers of heat exhaustion and how to prevent it, emphasising the importance of proper health practices during the peak heat season. The initiative is part of national efforts to raise awareness and safeguard workers from extreme weather risks. The campaign has reached thousands of workers at key locations across Sharjah, including various cultural and sports clubs and centres in areas such as Sharjah city, Al Hamriyah, Al Dhaid, Kalba, Khorfakkan, and Dibba Al Hisn. Awareness activities at these sites included lectures on the risks of heat exhaustion, first aid demonstrations, field medical check-ups, and the distribution of protective items to help workers stay safe in the heat. Additional awareness events are ongoing at other locations, including the Sharjah Cement Factory and Al Qasimia University Theatre. In addition to scheduled events, the campaign included field visits where health professionals educated workers on health procedures and advised employers at construction sites and factories about the importance of preventive measures. For the first time, the campaign also included new target groups such as cleaners, gas station workers, public park and parking staff, delivery personnel, and female workers. These groups were provided with vital information on how to minimise their exposure to heat and prevent exhaustion. Mohammed Abdullah Al Zarouni, Director of the Ministry's Representative Office in Sharjah, emphasised that completing these awareness stations marks a vital step in the country's broader strategy to protect worker health. The Health Education Department at the Supreme Council for Family Affairs stated that the campaign underscores the importance of empowering workers with the knowledge to adopt healthy practices. The third-hottest July worldwide ended a string of record-breaking temperatures, but many regions were devastated by extreme weather amplified by global warming, the European climate monitoring service said on Thursday. Heavy rains flooded Pakistan and northern China; Canada, Scotland and Greece struggled to tame wildfires intensified by persistent drought; and many nations in Asia and Scandinavia recorded new average highs for the month. 'Two years after the hottest July on record, the recent streak of global temperature records is over,' Carlo Buontempo, director of the EU's Copernicus Climate Change Service, said in a statement. 'But that does not mean climate change has stopped,' he said. 'We continue to witness the effects of a warming world.' As in June, July showed a slight dip compared to the preceding two years, averaging 1.25 degrees Celsius above the pre-industrial (1850-1900) era. 2023 and 2024 warmed above that benchmark by more than 1.5C, which is the Paris Agreement target set in 2015 for capping the rise in global temperatures at relatively safe levels. That deceptively small increase has been enough to make storms, heatwaves and other extreme weather events far more deadly and destructive. 'We continued to witness the effect of a warming world in events such as extreme heatwaves and catastrophic floods in July,' Buontempo said. Last month, temperatures exceeded 50C in the Gulf, Iraq and -- for the first time -- Turkey, while torrential rains killed hundreds of people in China and Pakistan. In Spain, more than a thousand deaths were attributed by a public institute to the heat in July, half as many as in the same period in 2024. WAM

Yas Clinic - Khalifa City, Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Centre celebrate successful bone marrow transplant

ABU DHABI (ALETIHAD) As part of its ongoing Year of Community 2025 campaign, Yas Clinic Khalifa City and Abu Dhabi Stem Cells Center hosted a celebration in honour of Matar, a young bone marrow transplant (BMT) patient who recently completed a long and challenging medical journey. Building on the success of previous community-driven initiatives, including Al Harith's High School Graduation Celebration and the Colours of Hope wall art project, this event marks a new chapter in Yas Clinic's mission to humanise the healing journey and celebrate the resilience of its patients. The initiative was led by the hospital's social worker, Rahma Almehairi, and brought together Matar's family, his medical team, and special guests in a joyful gathering that honored his strength and determination. To make the day unforgettable, a popular content creator surprised Matar with gaming-themed gifts, followed by a live video call with his favourite gaming influencers, allowing him to connect with the digital world he loves most. "In moments like these, we see the true spirit of healthcare - resilient, compassionate and uplifting.' said Robert Ball, CEO of Yas Clinic hospital. "Matar's story reminds us why we do what we do.' "Supporting Matar emotionally during his recovery was just as important as his medical treatment.' said Rahma Almehairi, Social Worker at Yas Clinic, Khalifa City. "This small celebration gave him a big memory - and this is at the heart of our work during the Year of Community.' "Despite the health challenges I went through, I was able to achieve this accomplishment thanks to God, the support of my family and my country," the Emirati teen said. He underwent a successful transplant in Abu Dhabi with bone marrow donated by his sister. "She donated her bone marrow to me, gave me a new life, may God reward her," Matar said.
