Pacemaker Qirat stuns Sussex Stakes big guns
The Ralph Beckett-trained Qirat, who was last seen finishing 27th of 30 runners in the Royal Hunt Cup, was supplemented for the race last week at a cost of £70,000 in a bid to ensure the red-hot favourite had a strong gallop to aim at.
But the race did not go to script, with Qirat keeping up the gallop to emerge triumphant under Richard Kingscote, despite the best efforts of Rosallion, who was a neck adrift at the line.
Field Of Gold, meanwhile, had to settle for a laboured fourth, with Henri Matisse third.
Beckett said: 'Richard has always been a very good judge of the clock. The last thing I said to him was keep going with this fellow, he could run really well.
'He loves this place and I wanted to enter him because his work was really good. It's a horse race and anything can happen.'
Qirat's dam, Emulous, also produced last year's Prix de l'Arc de Triomphe winner for Beckett in Bluestocking.
He went on: 'I thought he looked a million beforehand and that in the race he would set the pace from the front, and the longer he lasted the better for those concerned with the favourite.

'He's always threatened to be a good horse and today he showed it.
'What about the mare? To come up with Bluestocking and him. She's been like a hole in the wall, like a cash machine.'
Kingscote, who recently announced he is taking up a licence in Hong Kong, said: 'I feel like a villain but when I saw it wasn't a grey nose (Field Of Gold) coming towards me I just kept going.'
Although clearly not the result owner-breeders Juddmonte were expecting, the team's European racing manager Barry Mahon was keen to take the positives out of it.
Of Qirat, he told Racing TV: 'Ralph said in the parade ring beforehand 'this horse is going to run big' and said to Richard 'there's a big run in this horse'. Whilst he was obviously there to make the pace, Ralph thought he could finish in the three and he was dead right.
'He's a horse we always felt had a lot of potential. Ralph actually wanted to enter him for this race earlier in the year and in my wisdom I said 'don't be ridiculous'. We ended up having to supplement him, but he's got the result.
'At the end of the day Juddmonte and the owners want to compete at the top level and want to win Group One races. Whilst it's not with the horse we thought it would be, we've still won the race, which is the most important thing.'
When asked about future plans for the winner, Mahon added: 'I've had people from America and Hong Kong and every sort of racing jurisdiction coming up to me inviting him to run, so hopefully the owners might want to travel him.
'Ralph knows a thing or two about winning a Breeders' Cup race, so maybe that's where he'll end up.'
What the rest of the season holds for Field Of Gold remains to be seen, with Mahon saying: 'The rest of the field seemed to get detached from the two pacemakers, but I think ultimately William (Buick) felt he didn't handle the track and felt he was a bit flat today. We don't know why, but we all have off days – human and equines and all manner of beasts.
'Whether there's an issue there or something we're not sure, we'll have to investigate, but he's definitely not the Field Of Gold that we've all seen and know. I'm sure he'll be back and there'll be another day.
'He's had a good enough break since Ascot, John and Thady have freshened him up and they've been happy with how he's trained. He looked good today and William said going to the start he felt very fresh, so maybe he was a little bit too fresh.
'We did give him a good break after Ascot and maybe we were a little bit kind on him. We'll get him home and check him out first and I think we'll have to make a plan after that.'

Kieran Shoemark is reunited with Juddmonte which rubbishes the specuation he was sacked after Field Of Gold defeat
MATT CHAPMAN Kieran Shoemark is reunited with Juddmonte which rubbishes the specuation he was sacked after Field Of Gold defeat Click to share on X/Twitter (Opens in new window) Click to share on Facebook (Opens in new window) THE truth. There it was, staring me in the face. Many of you will have seen one of my favourite movies, Jerry Maguire. There's a moment in the film when Jerry sees the light and creates his own 'mission statement'. It was like he had been hit by a thunderbolt. Sign up for Scottish Sun newsletter Sign up 1 Matt Chapman hopes Kieran Shoemark has a big winner at Haydock Credit: Alamy On Thursday morning I experienced exactly that feeling, a moment of OMG, when jockey bookings were revealed for today's racing. It was a thing of beauty. Like two long-lost lovers reuniting. Kieran Shoemark riding OKEECHOBEE (3.00) for owners Juddmonte in the Group 3 Betfred Rose of Lancaster Stakes at Haydock. Even more significantly, in the very same race, Rossa Ryan has been jocked up on another Juddmonte horse, Detain, for John and Thady Gosden. Yes people, that's the Detain that only Shoemark has won a race on this season. Indeed, that's the Detain that has only ever been victorious with Shoemark on top. Some, of course, tried to make out Juddmonte got rid of Shoemark after the now infamous defeat of Field Of Gold in the 2,000 Guineas. The same Field Of Gold that didn't quicken down the dip at Newmarket like he subsequently did on a conventional track. The Rose Of Lancaster jockey bookings puts the Shoemark ditching theory to bed once and for all. Shoemark has a 33 per cent wins to rides strike-rate for Juddmonte in 2025 and a 35 per cent strike-rate in 2024, when he banged in nine victories from 26 rides. That's decent by anyone's standards. In a short space of time his big hits for the organisation included Field Of Gold (Craven and Solario), Zanzoun (Nell Gwyn), Lead Artist (Darley and Thoroughbred Stakes) and Tilsit (Summer Mile). I can't tell you how much I hope Okeechobee runs a huge one this afternoon live on ITV. Harry Charlton's six-year-old has been very hard to train and has only raced eight times. But at his peak rating of 113 he would have an each-way chance. He looked very good when landing the 2024 Gordon Richards Stakes at Sandown, seeing off a talented pair in Desert Hero and Israr. This season the son of Time Test has not been at his best, getting stuffed at both Kempton and Newbury when behind the re-opposing Royal Dubai. But Okeechobee is not devoid of talent and it's not impossible he can put his difficulties behind him. It's a belter of a race, though, as it also includes Haatem and Military Order. The former scored at Royal Ascot and was once third behind Notable Speech in the 2,000 Guineas and the latter was previously sent off at just 9-2 for the 2023 Derby! It's not just Shoemark who has the chance to make headlines on ITV. Billy Loughnane has been a breath of fresh since he banged in his first winner as a jockey aboard Swiss Rowe at Wolverhampton in November 2022. Now don't get me wrong here, Loughnane is not just some smiley, happy boy. He's changed a lot in the last three years, and now has a real air of confidence and cheek. So it's no real surprise that Godolphin's Charlie Appleby seems to be a fan. I could imagine Appleby and Loughnane being a perfect combination in the future. Right now, William Buick remains Appleby's star rider, and the situation won't change in the near future. Matt Chapman's ITV Racing tips Ascot 1.35 Toca Madera 2.10 Dancing In Paris 2.45 Dream Harder (NAP) 3.20 Zayer 3.55 Tenability 4.30 EBT'S Guard Haydock 2.25 Protest each-way 3.00 Okeechobee each-way Newmarket 3.40 Dance To The Music But Loughnane is getting chances to show what he can do, and that includes when taking the ride on unbeaten DANCE TO THE MUSIC (3.40) in the Group 3 Sweet Solera Stakes at Newmarket. The daughter of Dubawi and sister to Group 1 sprinter Space Blues looked good under Loughnane on debut, but that was a long time ago when she was suggested as a fancy for the Albany at Royal Ascot. Now she needs to show she's really promising. More importantly in some ways, Loughnane has arguably the biggest ride of his career so far tomorrow aboard Godolphin star Rebel's Romance in the Group 1 Hoppegarten Westminster 135th Grosser Preis von Berlin. The dual Breeders' Cup hero and winner of over £10million in prize money was last seen finishing third in the King George VI and Queen Elizabeth Stakes at Ascot. On paper he should take all the beating and provide Loughnane with his first Group 1 success. This is huge, massive. Of course, there is lots to look forward to in the coming weeks with York's Ebor Festival not far away. I'll be cheering for, Okeechobee. As Jerry would say, 'Show Shoe the money'. Yeeehaaa! Art Power ready to continue Curragh love affair
The unusually dry spring and summer has prevented Tim Easterby's grey from running so far this season as he is at his best when he can get his toe in. That is usually the case at the Curragh, where the eight-year-old has won four times from six outings. 'He likes it good or softer and we've been struggling to find any,' said Easterby. Group 2 winner 🏆 Art Power is now three from three at @curraghrace and unbeaten in four trips to Ireland, striding to success in the @weatherbysltd Ireland Greenlands Stakes for @EasterbyTim. First winner at Irish Flat HQ for @oismurphy! — Racing TV (@RacingTV) May 27, 2023 'He hasn't had an issue. We were going to get him ready in the spring but it was so dry there was no point and then we've found him a couple of races and he wasn't able to run. 'He got balloted out of a handicap at York and the ground was too fast at Ascot. He could have run at Chester last week but we decided not to run him there and wait for the Curragh. 'He's done a lot of work, he's in good form and I don't look to see how old he is. I never look at their age, I just go by what they are showing me. If he was a Champion Hurdle horse you'd be delighted he was eight. 'It sounds like the ground is good and we're very happy with him. 'I know it looks like he's better there than anywhere but I just think that's down to the fact it is always nice ground there.' Kind Of Blue (red hat) won at Ascot on Champions Day (Nigel French/PA) Another strong challenger from Britain is the James Fanshawe-trained Kind Of Blue, winner of the Champions Sprint last season but on a retrieval mission. Richard Brown of owners Wathnan Racing said: 'We're on the comeback trail but his work has been very good and James is very happy with him. 'We've had a couple of blips but hopefully we can get back on track on Saturday. 'I think the Curragh will be ideal for him and the stiff finish there will be right up his alley.' Karl Burke's Spycatcher and David O'Meara's Nighteyes also make the journey. Heading the home team is Adrian Murray's Bucanero Fuerte, winner of the Group One Phoenix Stakes on the card two years ago. 'We'll be going quite confident, he's in great form, he's fresh and well and should run a big race,' said Murray. 'He's got a great record first time out, he's won every year actually, so it will be no bad thing he's only had one run. 'He did have a bit of a setback just before Ascot, so he had a bit of time off after that but it might not be the worst thing in the world given his record fresh. 'He's won a Group One at the Curragh, he loves it there and he goes on any ground, he's won on all sorts, the ground won't be an issue, it will be lovely. 'I don't look at it and think 'I wish they weren't running', I'm looking at it thinking we should go well and be one of the favourites.'

International challenger Danon Decile enjoys gallops spin
The Dubai Sheema Classic winner is a temporary resident at James Horton's Beech Hurst Stables in the heartland of British racing ahead of his mouthwatering York clash with Eclipse one-two Delacroix and Ombudsman. He had his first canter up the famous Warren Hill in the company of trainer Shogo Yasuda, who is pleased by how his charge has settled into his new surroundings and also has no concerns about reverting to a mile and a quarter after his Group One strike over further in Dubai. Yasuda said: 'We did travel very well, so we're very satisfied. 'My training plan between the two weeks from here to York, the main thing is to take care of his mind – make him happy. 'I'm not concerned for the shorter distance. I believe he's got a lot of experience from racing. I'm not worried about the drop in distance. He can adjust pace.' Danon Decile is a five-time winner who will arrive at the Knavesmire in search of a hat-trick in the £1.25milllion feature of the Ebor Festival's opening day after his Meydan win followed a valuable triumph in his homeland. The four-year-old is as short as 4-1 with some bookmakers to scoop the prestigious Group One and he will be the second Japanese challenger in as many years to venture to Yorkshire after Durezza finished fifth in a race recognised as officially the best in the world 12 months ago.
