Alongside economic revitalisation, Buthelezi is set to unveil a new service delivery model tailored to fast-track essential services and assist municipalities in executing critical infrastructure projects.

Urgent action needed for water quality in KwaZulu-Natal

Image: Supplied by KZN Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs A REPORT released in the first half of 2025 has indicated that KwaZulu-Natal's drinking water was largely not suitable for human consumption. The 2023 Blue Drop Report showed that out of the 172 water supply systems in KZN, only three were Blue Drop certified, while 34 were performing poorly, and 21 were in a critical state. The results have prompted the portfolio committee of the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs to engage with the department on the concerning state of the province's potable water. Marlaine Nair, the portfolio committee chairperson, said the matter required an urgent response. 'We will raise the matter with Cogta - water quality must be a priority,' Nair said in response to Blue Drop Reports revelations. Cogta KZN's spokesperson, Senzelwe Mzila, said their challenges are multifaceted, which included ailing infrastructure and budget limitations. Therefore, Cogta has committed to enforce the development and implementation of recommendations listed in the report to improve water access and quality standards in the province. Mzila said his department will also explore the potential for different municipalities to use wind turbines as an alternative energy source. Another challenge listed by Mzila was the shortage of water in KZN, which was due mostly to the lack of operations and maintenance of key infrastructure in the municipalities, which, according to him, had been deteriorating over the years due to various factors. 'To mitigate the growing water supply challenges, we will work closely with the provincial Treasury department and monitor municipal budgets to ensure a minimum of 8% allocation for operational and maintenance (O&M) costs,' he said. Mzila said what the department had found was that billions of rands are lost annually to non-revenue water in the province. According to him, this staggering figure underscores a critical challenge that was severely compromising water security for communities. 'As highlighted by the Minister of Water and Sanitation, the issue of non-revenue water is a national crisis, but its impact is particularly acute in KwaZulu-Natal. The province is already grappling with the pressures of population growth, climate change, and unequal distribution of water resources, and this is further burdened by this significant wastage,' he said.

Women unite to mark 69 years since iconic march
The Gauteng Provincial Government, in partnership with the Tshwane metro, hosted the annual Women's Day celebration at the Union Buildings on Saturday. Marking the 69th anniversary of the historic 1956 Women's March, the event was held under the theme 'Building Resilient Economies for All'. The day began with a powerful re-enactment of the march, as the women in the safety and security cluster led a 2.2km procession from Tshwane House, located on the corner of Lillian Ngoyi and Madiba streets, to the Union Buildings. Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi and other government officials joined the march, paying tribute to the courage of the women who fought for freedom. Addressing the crowd at the Union Buildings, Premier Lesufi highlighted the importance of unity and economic empowerment for women. The celebration continued with a music festival featuring an all-female line-up. MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Matome Chiloane, said the province had made significant strides in creating an enabling environment for women to thrive. 'Over the years, Gauteng has created an enabling environment for women to thrive both in their personal and professional lives. 'Investing in women and girls in areas such as sport, education, healthcare, and economic opportunities will remain one of the province's priorities,' he said. He said they salute the achievements of women over the years, including their pivotal role in transforming the nation, and their contributions to socio-economic development. 'We will continue to honour women from different spheres of life for their remarkable achievements and overcoming challenges and societal barriers.' An on-site government and business expo brought services closer to residents, with organisations such as SARS, Home Affairs, SASSA, the Department of Health and economic development agencies offering assistance and information to attendees. Gauteng records R21 billion in domestic spending as G20 Summit approaches

Image: Gauteng Tourism Authority X account Ahead of the upcoming G20 Summit, Gauteng MEC for economic development, Lebogang Maile, has revealed that the province has recorded more than 6.4 million visitors and generated more than R21 billion in domestic spending in the current financial year. Maile who briefed the media on Sunday, indicated that while the province remains the net exporter of domestic travel due to the high number of people with a sizable disposal income per capita, it managed to achieve 6.4 million domestic trips while generating a total of R21 billion in domestic spending, underscoring the pride and participation in the provincial tourism economy and offerings. This comes as South Africa's economic hub is anticipating a big buzz with economic activity as it prepares to host the annual G20 Leaders' Summit, which will take place from 18 to 19 November 2025. Advertisement Next Stay Close ✕ Ad loading Maile revealed that more than R1.8 billion was realised as direct contribution of hosted quality signature events in the province, and a total of R19 million in revenue was generated for SMMEs, underscoring the transformative nature of tourism and quality events hosting and leveraging in the province. As a result of this strong performance, Maile said Gauteng has reinforced its status as the most visited province in South Africa and the continent's most globally connected tourism gateway. "Gauteng has without a doubt, reinforced its status as the most visited province in South Africa. In 2024/25, Gauteng recorded over 3.8 million international arrivals, a significant increase from the previous year's 2.6 million. As a result of this increase, the foreign direct spend or international tourism revenue contribution also rose to R41 Billion against our target of R29 billion," he said.
