"Saw XI" Suffers Devastating Blow as Production Plunges into Crisis

Yara Sameh
The future of "Saw XI" is currently uncertain as 'zero progress' has been made on the next installment since writing partners Patrick Melton and Marcus Dunstan turned in a draft back in the spring of 2024.
'We haven't heard anything since May,' says Saw XI screenwriter Melton, who has been involved with the franchise since 2007's Saw IV. 'It's stalled at a managerial level. It has nothing to do with the creative or anything else. There's higher-level things at play.'
In late December 2023, Lionsgate announced that franchise mainstay Kevin Greutert was attached to direct "Saw XI" for a September 2024 release, but the studio ultimately delayed it by a year to September 26, 2025.
Greutert helmed "Saw X", which revitalized the franchise when it hit theaters in September 2023 and collected $112 million at the global box office. It is unclear if he is still involved in "Saw XI".
Melton points out that "Saw X" did well, and that the team has a concept that they're proud of for the next movie. They intended to tackle a timely topic, although plot details have not yet been shared publicly.
The writer likens the new project's premise to the timeliness of the 2009 release "Saw VI", in which health insurance executives are targeted by John Kramer, aka Jigsaw (Tobin Bell). This topic captured renewed attention earlier this year with the murder of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson.
'Saw XI may or may not be made, but we have a very timely story in it, and I hope it gets made just because of that,' Melton said. 'It taps into the same themes of Saw VI, where you're a citizen, you feel angry and frustrated with something, you feel like you can't do anything, and John Kramer's going to do it.'
Adds the writer about "Saw XI", 'The reason it's held up is just, there's inter-squabbling between producers and Lionsgate. They just can't quite get on the same page.'
As far as the previous movies, Melton recalls that critics reacted favorably to "Saw VI", but that the feature was hurt at the box office by Paranormal Activity hitting theaters a month prior.
'Saw VI was the one that got cut in half because of Paranormal Activity, which was odd because it was the best-reviewed one [at the time],' he added. 'It was the first one that really resonated with a lot of critics because it was about health care. The production was really easy, though, even though the Saw movies were made every year, which is hard to do.'
Mark Burg, a longtime producer on the Saw franchise that launched with director James Wan's 2004 original, pointed out that he oversaw not only "Saw VI" but also 2002's similarly themed "John Q", the Denzel Washington thriller about a father who resorts to crime after he can't pay his son's health bills.
'Jigsaw goes after somebody who won't provide insurance for him,' Burg says of Saw VI. 'So I guess I'm two for two.'
As it turns out, Melton went to college with slain United Healthcare CEO Thompson at the University of Iowa. 'We were at Iowa at the same time, so we graduated the same year in 1997,' recalls the writer, who notes that they knew each other but weren't close friends. 'I can tell you Brian was pretty normal at school. He drank Bud Light and was a good guy.'

Blumhouse in Talks to Buy "Saw" Franchise from Twisted Pictures

Yara Sameh Blumhouse is in talks to acquire part of the long-running horror franchise 'Saw'. Blumhouse is in the midst of a deal to take over the ownership stake of Saw from Twisted Pictures, the banner run by Oren Koules and Mark Burg. Twisted co-owns the rights with Lionsgate, which has distributed the films since releasing the first film in 2004. If a deal is made, it would bring the franchise back into the hands of James Wan, the filmmaker who directed that movie and created the franchise with co-writer Leigh Whannell. Blumhouse, run by Jason Blum, merged with Wan's production banner, Atomic Monster, in early January 2024. The talks between Blumhouse and Twisted began last year but broke down earlier this year. A sale price was one of the big sticking points. Made for only $1.2 million, Saw became one of the most profitable horror movies of all time when it opened to $18.2 million domestically and earned $104 million worldwide. Home entertainment was equally massive (this was the DVD era, after all) and a franchise, that encompassed 10 movies as well as merchandising, video games, and more, followed. The last entry in the franchise, 'Saw X' was released in 2023 and earned $112.2 million worldwide. An 11th movie was in the works but stalled out. While it is unclear what the plans for any new stories would entail — more movies? a series? — but the deal is the latest in a growing number that have creatives or filmmakers own, partially or entirely, their creations. Koules and Burg reportedly financed most of Saw's budget after first seeing Wan and Whannel's short film. Wan, off the success of Saw, went on to create or co-create the Insidious horror franchise and The Conjuring horror universe. "Michael" Likely Pushed to 2026, Split into Two Movies

Yara Sameh Michael Jackson fans will have to wait a little longer for Antoine Fuqua's biopic 'Michael.' During Lionsgate's Q4 2025 earnings call, CEO Jon Feltheimer shared an update on the film starring Jackson's nephew Jaafar Jackson, who makes his screen debut in the project. 'In regard to our Michael Jackson biopic, we're excited about the 3½ hours of amazing footage from producer Graham King and director Antoine Fuqua, and we will be announcing a definitive release strategy & timing in the next few weeks,' he said. 'I would note that it is likely we will move 'Michael' out of the fiscal year which will impact fiscal '26 financial results but will bolster an already strong fiscal '27 slate.' The fiscal calendar ends on March 31, 2026, so Feltheimer's statement indicates that the film (or films) will likely debut after April 1, 2026. Last month, Variety reported that the film would likely be split into two parts and be pushed from the initially announced release date of October 3, 2025. While 'Michael' was a major part of last year's Lionsgate CinemaCon presentation, no footage from the project was shown during this year's outing. The film, produced by 'Bohemian Rhapsody's' Graham King, wrapped principal photography in May 2024, but John Logan's script is in the process of being revised in advance of reshoots. 'Michael,' which carries a roughly $155 million budget, also stars Colman Domingo and Nia Long as family heads Joe and Katherine Jackson, while Miles Teller will play Jackson's attorney and advisor John Branca. Larenz Tate will star as Motown Records founder Berry Gordy, while Laura Harrier will portray pioneering female music executive Suzanne de Passe and Kat Graham will appear as the legendary Diana Ross. Other cast members include Jessica Sula ('Split') as La Toya Jackson, Michael's older sister; Liv Symone ('Power Book III: Raising Kanan') as Gladys Knight; Kevin Shinick ('Robot Chicken') as Dick Clark; KeiLyn Durrel Jones ('The Other Two,' 'How to Die Alone') as Jackson's former security-turned-trusted friend and confidante Bill Bray; and Kendrick Sampson ('Insecure') as industry icon Quincy Jones, who first met Michael Jackson when he was just 12 years old. The pair would go on to collaborate on three of Michael's most successful albums: 1979's 'Off the Wall,' 1982's 'Thriller' and 1987's 'Bad.' read more New Tourism Route To Launch in Old Cairo Ahmed El Sakka-Led Play 'Sayidati Al Jamila' to Be Staged in KSA on Dec. 6 Mandy Moore Joins Season 2 of "Dr. Death" Anthology Series Don't Miss These Movies at 44th Cairo Int'l Film Festival Today Amr Diab to Headline KSA's MDLBEAST Soundstorm 2022 Festival Arts & Culture Mai Omar Stuns in Latest Instagram Photos Arts & Culture "The Flash" to End with Season 9 Arts & Culture Ministry of Culture Organizes four day Children's Film Festival Arts & Culture Canadian PM wishes Muslims Eid-al-Adha News Egypt confirms denial of airspace access to US B-52 bombers News Ayat Khaddoura's Final Video Captures Bombardment of Beit Lahia News Australia Fines Telegram $600,000 Over Terrorism, Child Abuse Content Arts & Culture Nicole Kidman and Keith Urban's $4.7M LA Home Burglarized Sports Former Al Zamalek Player Ibrahim Shika Passes away after Long Battle with Cancer Sports Neymar Announced for Brazil's Preliminary List for 2026 FIFA World Cup Qualifiers News Prime Minister Moustafa Madbouly Inaugurates Two Indian Companies Arts & Culture New Archaeological Discovery from 26th Dynasty Uncovered in Karnak Temple Business Fear & Greed Index Plummets to Lowest Level Ever Recorded amid Global Trade War Arts & Culture Zahi Hawass: Claims of Columns Beneath the Pyramid of Khafre Are Lies
