Jon Gruden wins key ruling in Nevada in case against NFL
Gruden sued the NFL in 2021 after he parted ways with the Las Vegas Raiders when leaked emails revealed racist, sexist and homophobic language.
The former head coach and longtime football personality filed a lawsuit against the league and Commissioner Roger Goodell, alleging that a "malicious and orchestrated campaign" was used to destroy his career by leaking the emails. The leaked messages were from when he was an ESPN analyst and "Monday Night Football" broadcaster.
The NFL appealed to Nevada's high court in 2022 after a judge in Las Vegas rejected the league's bids to dismiss Gruden's claim outright or to order the out-of-court talks through an arbitration process that could be overseen by Goodell.
On Monday, the Nevada Supreme Court ruled in a 5-2 decision that "the arbitration clause in the NFL Constitution is unconscionable and does not apply to Gruden as a former employee."
The NFL declined to comment on the ruling, according to The Associated Press.
Gruden's lawyers applauded the ruling in a statement to Pro Football Talk.
"We're very pleased with the Nevada Supreme Court's decision, not just for Coach Gruden but for all employees facing an employer's unfair arbitration process," Adam Hosmer-Henner of McDonald Carano LLP told the outlet. "This victory further vindicates Coach Gruden's reputation, and it clears the way to swiftly bringing him full justice and holding the NFL accountable."
Gruden was the head coach of the Raiders when the team moved from Oakland to Las Vegas. He is seeking monetary damages, alleging that the selective disclosure of the emails ruing his career and endorsement deals.
Since he left the Raiders, Gruden has worked his way back into the NFL unofficially. He's been seen on the sidelines working with players from the New Orleans Saints and, most recently, the Detroit Lions and Jacksonville Jaguars. He's also a part-owner and consultant for the Arena Football One League's Nashville Kats.
He expressed hope for an NFL return in July when visiting the Lions.
"Hopefully I'm not done," Gruden told reporters, via the Detroit Free Press. "I'm about to make a comeback. I'm working hard to maybe get one more shot, but hopefully some of these guys that fell off my branch, if you say it that way, maybe they can hire me cause I'm looking for a job.
"I don't care if I coach at Jones Junior High," he added. "I'm going to coach again. I'm still coaching. I'm just not on a team officially, but I do have some private assignments I work on, and I wear some gear when I'm watching the games that nobody knows about who I'm pulling for."

The new Roki looks like the old Roki
In Dodgers minor league games for Thursday, August 14th, eyes were on the mound in Oklahoma City as appearances by Roki Sasaki, Michael Kopech, and Bobby Miller all had implications for the parent Dodgers. Roki Sasaki made a rehab start as the Dodgers hope that he might contribute to the parent Dodgers during the pennant stretch and possibly postseason. It didn't go well. Sasaki threw 41 pitches (25 strikes) in two innings of work, giving up three runs on six hits and one walk, while striking out nobody. His velocity, closely watched from day one after Sasaki specifically focused on that in team interviews prior to signing, was mostly 92-94 mph, never reaching 96. Sasaki threw over 100 mph in Japan before losing some velocity and effectiveness in his last season there. This was his first outing since he was shut down, so the Dodgers can hope things will improve as he builds himself up. Not helping the Dodgers' collective psyche was another rough rehab appearance, this time by Michael Kopech. Kopech couldn't get through an inning, giving up two walks and two hits in the course of getting two outs. The Dodgers picked up Kopech mid-season last year, and he barely gave up a run for the rest of the season (three total runs in 24 games). He showed up injured to spring training, made it back for eight scoreless appearances, then went back on the injured list. For some good news, Bobby Miller may have found himself in the bullpen. His shutout inning gave him six straight scoreless appearances (seven innings), during which time Miller has only allowed one hit and one walk. Ronan Kopp pitched two perfect innings, and he seems to have found his groove in Triple-A with three straight scoreless performances, striking out eight in four and one-third innings. Kopp, who went over a month without giving up an earned run (15 appearances) prior to being promoted to OKC, has 68 strikeouts in 44 innings on the season, with 34 walks. Notably, he has not given up a home run in 39 games. As far as the game, the Albuquerque Isotopes beat the Oklahoma City Comets 8-5. The offense put up 13 hits (six extra-base hits) and six walks, but could only convert that into five runs. Esteury Ruiz had a productive game with two hits, two walks, a home run, and two stolen bases. Maybe it's not as weird as I think. For the fifth time in about four days, a Dodgers affiliate has pulled off this same pattern. The starting pitcher goes exactly five innings and gives up one run, and the bullpen closes with four scoreless innings. Patrick Copen worked around some traffic, yielding six hits and four walks in five innings, but only one run. James Tibbs III had three hits and is now hitting .317 as a Dodger in 11 games, with a 9/10 strikeout/walk ratio. 23-year-old catcher Nelson Quiroz, promoted to Double-A after hitting .367 in 98 at-bats in High-A, so far hasn't found the pitching-dominant Texas League to be much more of a challenge. In 47 at-bats for Tulsa, Quiroz is hitting .362. A five-run eighth inning turned the game around as the Wisconsin Timber Rattlers defeated the Great Lakes Loons 8-6. Logan Tabeling, in his High-A debut, got roughed up for those five runs, taking home a loss and a blown save as souvenirs. Zyhir Hope, hitting .125 in 40 at-bats in August, got two hits, and Jake Gelof hit his tenth home run. Kendall George was on base four times with two hits and two walks, so naturally, he stole four bases. The Rancho Cucamonga Quakes scored five runs in the first two innings. and the Visalia Rawhide could never catch up, the game ending in a 7-4 score. 2024 round-18 draft pick Isaac Ayon made his first appearance in Low-A ball and lasted two and two-thirds innings, giving up one run on two hits. Niko Perez drove in three runs for the Quakes, and Mairoshendrick Martinus hit his fifth home run. Louisiana attorney general sues Roblox
The attorney general of Louisiana has filed a lawsuit against Roblox, accusing the platform of failing to implement basic safety controls and making the site the 'perfect place for pedophiles.' The lawsuit, filed on Thursday by Attorney General Liz Murrill, alleges that Roblox 'has and continues to facilitate the distribution of child sexual abuse material and the sexual exploitation of Louisiana's children.' It also accuses the platform of purposely not rolling out basic safety controls to protect children from predators and failing to notify parents of risks. Roblox, which launched in 2006, has 82 million daily active users. The lawsuit notes that 20% of these users are under the age of 8, whereas another 20% are between the ages of 9 and 12. 'Due to Roblox's lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana,' Murrill said in a statement. 'Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety. Every parent should be aware of the clear and present danger poised to their children by Roblox so they can prevent the unthinkable from ever happening in their own home.' According to the lawsuit, adults can pose as children on Roblox, and children can bypass age requirements to access experiences meant for older users. The lawsuit points to several sexually explicit experiences that were on the platform, including 'Escape to Epstein Island,' 'Diddy Party,' and 'Public Bathroom Simulator Vibe.' A spokesperson for Roblox said that while the company can't comment on pending litigation, the platform dedicates 'substantial resources, including advanced technology and 24/7 human moderation, to help detect and prevent inappropriate content and behavior, including attempts to direct users off platform, where safety standards and moderation may be less stringent than ours.' 'While no system is perfect, Roblox has implemented rigorous technology and enforcement safeguards, including restrictions on sharing personal information, links, and user-to-user image sharing,' the spokesperson said. 'The safety of our community is a top priority.' Last year, Roblox launched a number of safety measures to protect children on its platform, including barring users under the age of 13 from sending direct messages. The measures were implemented following reports that Roblox was exposing young users to dangerous risks, such as grooming and explicit content. Murrill's lawsuit states that Roblox's recent safety measures were implemented too late and are inadequate. The lawsuit seeks permanent injunctive relief, prohibiting the company from claiming that it has adequate safety features and from engaging in any activity that would violate the Louisiana Unfair Trade Practices Act. ESPN predicts how Notre Dame will fare in the College Football Playoff
On Friday morning two ESPN analysts, Kyle Bonagura and Mark Schlabach predicted how the College Football Playoff would play out and both of them had much different outlooks for Notre Dame. They do think that the Irish will make the field of 12-teams, but with varying results. Bonagura has Notre Dame having a rematch of its season-opening game against No. 11 Miami as the No. 6 seed while Schlabach has the Irish as the No. 7 seed taking on No. 10 LSU. While Notre Dame is eligible to get a first-round bye, they don't think that will be the case this year. It could be a blessing in disguise, as all four teams that sat out the first-round of the CFP lost its second-round game last year. Schlabach doesn't have Notre Dame moving past the initial game, while Bonagura does. He has them matching up against No. 3 Ohio State, only to fall to the Buckeyes once again. As for the eventual championship game, they both have their No. 1 and No. 2 ranked teams facing off, but with different matchups. Bonagura has No. 2 Penn State facing No. 1 Texas, while Schlabach has No. 2 Clemson also taking on the Longhorns. After what we saw last year, it's hard to say that the top-two teams will eventually play for a championship, as neither the Irish or the Buckeyes were one of the top seeds. This isn't how I see it playing out, as I think that the Irish will get a top-4 seed, and an easier path in the CFP. How do you see it playing out?
