US duty bump jolts JLR, dents Tata Motors profit in Q1

MUMBAI: The profitability of Tata Motors ' cash cow, Jaguar Land Rover, was hit by tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump, resulting in a 30% fall in the overall profitability of the Indian company. Outgoing JLR chief Adrian Mardell anticipates new trade deals signed between the US and the UK, effective June 30, and between EU and US, announced on July 27, reducing tariffs on UK-produced and EU-made vehicles exported to America from 27.5% to 10% and 15%, respectively, will lessen the financial impact of US tariffs on the business in following quarters. Operating profit of JLR slipped 49% to 351 million pounds or Rs 4,130 crore in Q1FY26. Revenue at JLR, acquired by Tata Motors in June 2008, also decreased by 10% to 6.6 billion pounds or Rs 77,662 crore as it ceased exports to the US for nearly a month in April in response to the tariffs imposed by Trump and phased out older Jaguar models primarily made in the UK. The US is the most important export market for JLR, accounting for nearly a quarter of its sales. These earnings come just eight days after JLR announced Mardell's exit from the company, where he has worked for 35 years and overseen its strongest profit in a decade. Incoming JLR CEO P B Balaji brushed off criticism from Trump, who accused JLR of being in "absolute turmoil" and labelled its recent marketing campaign as "stupid" and "woke". Despite this, JLR is standing by its new branding. Tata Motors' profit reduced to Rs 4,003 crore in Q1 FY26. Canadian dollar clings to weekly gain as rate-cut bets edge up after jobs data

* Canadian dollar trades in a range of 1.3726 to 1.3762 * The loonie on track to add 0.3% for the week * Canada's economy sheds 40,800 jobs in July * Canada-US 10-year yield spread widens by 6.6 basis points By Fergal Smith TORONTO, - The Canadian dollar steadied against its U.S. counterpart on Friday, holding on to a modest weekly gain, after softer-than-expected domestic jobs data that had only limited impact on expectations for Bank of Canada interest rate cuts. The loonie was trading nearly unchanged at 1.3745 per U.S. dollar, or 72.75 U.S. cents, after moving in a range of 1.3726 to 1.3762. For the week, the currency was up 0.3%. The Canadian economy shed 40,800 jobs in July, giving back some of the substantial gains seen in the prior month and sending the share of people employed in the population to an eight-month low. Economists expected a gain of 13,500 jobs. "We are still weeks away from the next meeting with more key data in between, which should limit the market reaction," strategists at TD Securities, including Jayati Bharadwaj, said in a note. "The trade deal with the U.S. remains the big risk on the horizon, but we do not think that it will be a ground-breaking factor for the economy or for the BoC when the majority of exports are USMCA-compliant, and more and more exporters continue to register as such every month." About 92% of Canadian exports by value entered the U.S. market on a tariff-free basis in June under the U.S.-Mexico-Canada Agreement. Investors see a 38% chance that the Canadian central bank will lower its benchmark rate from the current level of 2.75% in its September 17 policy announcement, up from 33% before the jobs data. Stocks on Wall Street moved higher and the U.S. dollar fell against a basket of major currencies as President Donald Trump's pick to serve out the final few months of a newly vacant Federal Reserve governor's seat bolstered expectations for rate cuts by the U.S. central bank. Canadian bond yields eased across the curve. The 10-year was down 2.5 basis points at 3.377%, while it fell 6.6 basis points further below the U.S. equivalent to a gap of about 91 basis points. Bad news for Noel Tata, this company profit fell by 62% to Rs…, hit by lower…

Tata Motors on Friday reported a 62.2% year-on-year drop in consolidated net profit to Rs 4,003 crore for the June quarter, hit by lower volumes across segments, reduced profits at Jaguar Land Rover due to US tariffs, and a high base from gains on the sale of discontinued operations last year. In the April–June quarter of the previous fiscal, the auto major had posted a net profit of Rs 10,587 crore, the company said in a regulatory filing. Revenue from operations came in at Rs 1,04,407 crore, compared to Rs 1,07,102 crore in the same period last year. Tata Motors Q1 Results TML's performance in the quarter was impacted by volume decline in all businesses and a drop in profitability primarily at JLR, the company said. Following the amalgamation of Tata Motors Finance Ltd (TMFL) – a wholly-owned step down subsidiary of the company – into Tata Capital Ltd, the company had received equity shares of TCL amounting to Rs 8,016 crore over the book value of net assets transferred as at appointed date of April 1, 2024, amounting to Rs 4,975 crore as gain on sale of discontinued operation in consolidated results, the filing said. 'Despite stiff macro headwinds, the business delivered a profitable quarter, supported by strong fundamentals. As tariff clarity emerges and festive demand picks up, we are aiming to accelerate performance and rebuild momentum across the portfolio. Against the backdrop of the upcoming demerger in October 2025, our focus remains firmly on delivering a strong second-half performance,' Tata Motors Group CFO PB Balaji said. How JLR Was Hit By US Tariffs? Addressing an earnings call, he said, 'In the current quarter, we (JLR) have got hit by almost 250 million pounds on (US) tariff charges because even though the deal (UK-US trade deal) was announced on May 8, it got ratified only on June 30, and it is not with retrospective effect.' Going forward, he said the correction for the reduction in tariffs from 27.5 per cent to 10 per cent under the US-UK trade deal and 27.5 per cent to 15 per cent, under the US-EU deal, along with the removal of the penalty for emission in the US will play through. 'Net impact is what we want to figure out a way to manage through the rest of the year,' he said, adding that while the US demand is holding up, China has introduced luxury tax on all imported vehicles and 'we have to figure out a way to manage that'. JLR revenues were down by 9.2 per cent to 6.6 billion pounds, impacted by significant new US trade tariffs on the UK and EU-produced cars exported to the US, and the planned legacy Jaguar wind-down.
