The heatwave's top tipple — plus more trends to know

Times12-07-2025
Find out what's heating up (and cooling down) in our weekly barometer of trends from fashion to pop culture.
Bored of your souped-up martini and flavoured spritz? Make way for a surprise summer drink: white port and tonic. With notes of almond and grape, it's already big in Lisbon and Porto. 'People love it because it's so easy and sippable, especially in this heatwave — it's the perfect balance of refreshing and light,' says Marco Mendes, co-founder of the Casa do Frango restaurants, London.
He recommends it as an aperitif with some salted almonds, cheese or ham. Or sup it with a plump gordal olive at Bar Valette, Shoreditch. Meanwhile in Edinburgh, try Noto's Porto Ibis cocktail (strawberry-infused white port, sherry and balsamic vinegar and tonic). Cheers to that!
Wanting to scratch that White Lotus-slash-Capote vs the Swans itch? You're in luck, because pop culture right now is all about socialites in trouble. Great Black Hope, the recently published debut novel by Rob Franklin, takes a satirical swipe at the New York social scene when the black, gay protagonist is arrested at a Hamptons party after cocaine is found. Later this month is Netflix's Indonesian drama A Normal Woman, about a socialite forced to adapt to a new life after getting a mystery disease, while on the big screen Jessica Chastain's film Dreams focuses on a doomed love affair between an illegal immigrant ballet dancer and a one-percenter. Poshos in peril never looked so good.
Christmas may feel a lifetime away but the fashion world is already celebrating. At least it seems that way with boozy burgundy and festive claret emerging as this summer's hot palette. Wine-inspired garbs are all over the shops, from cotton sundresses in deep burgundy (try Mango and Zara) to merlot-hued linen (Arket) that's perfect for the beach. Instead of party shoes and black tailoring, summer burgundy looks best worn head to toe or alongside other punchy colours. Try sky blue if you're feeling especially merry.
Ever since Stormzy bigged up FeYi Flowers on social media a few months back — sending out 100 of the brand's bouquets — the east London company founded by Eni Awoyemi, 31, has been going great guns. Each bouquet is wrapped in newspaper with phrases like 'You were made to bloom' in bold lettering. 'We want our bouquets to feel like a fashion item rather than just florals,' she says. Instead of formal training as a florist, Ayowemi — who used to work in PR for Channel 4 — spent years honing her skills arranging displays at home. The idea for FeYi Flowers was born three years ago, at the same time as Ayowemi's daughter, the brand's namesake, but it was a collaboration request from the coffee chain Blank Street last year that gave her the push to transform FeYi Flowers into a booming business. Since then she has made bouquets for Ciara and Tina Knowles among others. 'Feyi means joy, so we want our flowers to make you feel that.'
If in your head you're already on holiday, it's probably time to invest in the perfect beach-ready hat. The luxury raffia take on the bucket is Mulberry's answer to sheltering from the sun this summer. Add great swimwear — and a piña colada, of course. £165, mulberry.com

Drawing of pet squirrel by King George III's would-be assassin to go on display

An illustration of a pet squirrel by the would-be assassin of King George III is to go on display for the first time at the world's oldest psychiatric hospital. The early 19th century drawing, which was accompanied by an ode about the pet, was created by James Hadfield and will be exhibited at Bethlem Museum Of The Mind in London. Hadfield attempted to shoot King George III at London's Drury Lane Theatre but missed and was arrested on the spot. Epitaph, Of My Poor Jack, Squirrel, is one of many pet epitaphs by Hadfield, who was a patient at Bethlem. He suffered delusions about the end of the world and became convinced he must sacrifice himself to save mankind. Parliament rushed through an act to ensure Hadfield was treated as a 'criminal lunatic' and consigned to Bethlem. Hadfield spent the remaining 41 years of his life in a cell at the hospital, where he was allowed pets and attracted many visitors, who he sold his epitaphs to. The piece is one of three versions the museum holds, with this version, which says Jack died in an accidental fall after being startled by a cat, having never been on display before. Following the attempted assassination in 1800, Hadfield's lawyer successfully argued that he was a 'religious maniac' who was 'incurably insane' and not responsible for his actions. The drawing will be displayed as part of an exhibition, Between Sleeping And Waking: Hospital Dreams And Visions. Also on show will be artwork by Boris Johnson's mother Charlotte Johnson Wahl, and the dream diaries of psychiatrist Dr Edward Hare. Colin Gale, director of Bethlem Museum Of The Mind, said: 'Between Sleeping And Waking has opened up exciting perspectives on artworks, many of which have been in storage for years. 'It is striking that an entire spectrum of dreams identified by sleep researchers is reflected within our museum's collections.' Between Sleeping And Waking: Hospital Dreams And Visions will run from August 14 to November 22 at the museum, and entry is free.

Sam Thompson reveals Love Islander invited him to the Hideaway after making a VERY steamy remark about him

Sam Thompson has revealed that a Love Island star invited him to the Hideaway after making a very steamy remark about him. Speaking to pal Pete Wicks on their Staying Relevant podcast, Sam recalled an encounter with a star from this year's show, Helena Ford, 29, where she'd asked him to go to the Hideaway. Helena's offer came after a tweet written by her back in 2017 resurfaced ahead of the Love Island final, in which she had asked where to apply to 'sit on Sam Thompson's face'. On the podcast, Pete, 36, poked fun at Sam, 33, asking if Helena had given him a birthday treat and 'squatted on his snoz' when they finally came face to face. Sam revealed he did indeed spark up a conversation with Helena at Aftersun, as he said: 'So basically Helena is sat on a stall and I went do you know what I'm going to go and say hello. So I go over to her and say "Hey Helena how are you?" and she goes "We need to speak. I think you know what about". 'I was like "Is it about the face sitting incident?" And she actually played on it and was like "Well the hideaway is free now?".' The comment shocked Sam's podcast co-host Pete, whose jaw-dropped at the remark. Sam added: 'She took the banter really really well and even gave a little bit back so fair play to her. 'And I can only wish her godspeed on whatever journey she decides to go on.' The chat came after Pete read out a tweet made by Helena about Sam years earlier, in a previous podcast episode. 'Where do I apply to sit on Sam Thompson's face? Asking for a mate,' the tweet written by Helena at the time had said. Pete warned Sam that he and Helena would come face to face on Aftersun, to which the Made In Chelsea star said: 'I don't mind coming on to ask her!' After the video from the podcast was shared on TikTok, Helena commented: 'They don't call me hideaway Helena for nothing.' It comes after Sam was forced to break the news of his split from Zara McDermott to Jamie Lee Curtis on Monday, after the Hollywood actress previously tipped the pair for marriage. The reality star was reunited with the actress, 66, on his Hits Radio Breakfast Show and they reminisced over her previous appearance during which time he was still dating Zara. Sam revealed that Jamie had been his first ever guest on his first ever show on the station and was so nervous that he lied, and that untruth led to her calling for him to get down on one knee. He sheepishly told her: 'Last time we met, I may have lied to you, it was my first day and I said about pre-drinks and you went "I'm sober"' - e arlier this year Jamie celebrated 26-years of sobriety. Sam recalled panicking in the moment and was so worried about upsetting his guest that he lied and confessed to also being teetotal. 'You lied to me' Jamie said with a smile on her face, to which the host replied: 'I fully lied to your face'. Sam said he remembered Jamie asking him he had decided to give up alcohol, which saw him forced to 'make up a story on the spot'. 'I said: "My girlfriend doesn't drink and I'm trying to just be more like her and not drink" and you were like "That is the nicest thing anyone's ever said" you were like "get her a ring!". Jamie chimed in: 'I did, I said: "Put a ring on it" and?' she asked expectantly, to which a giggling same replied: 'Oh no, we broke up!'. 'Because you were drunk!' the Hollywood actress quipped as the studio collapsed into giggles. Sam and Zara, 28, ended their five year relationship in December, following a holiday season spent separately.

Royal fans accuse Meghan Markle of 'copying' Kate with 'festive' new Netflix announcement

Royal fans have accused Meghan Markle of 'copying' the Princess of Wales after it was revealed the second season of the Duchess's 'With Love, Meghan' lifestyle show will include a Christmas special. Fans have compared it to the festive productions created by Kate Middleton, 43. These include her 2019 collaboration with Mary Berry on a seasonal cookery programme, and her annual carol service, titled Royal Carols: Together At Christmas, which is typically broadcast on ITV1 on December 24. Yesterday, it was announced that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex have signed a new 'multi-year, first look deal for film and television projects' with Netflix, which has been described as a downgrade on their previous contract with the streamer. The couple's new output is slated to include a second season of the Duchess's lifestyle show released later this month, as well as a Christmas special titled With Love, Meghan: Holiday Celebration, in December. Fans have criticised the news, accusing the Suits actress, 44, of 'copying' Kate by releasing a Christmas episode. Writing on X (formerly Twitter) one said: 'Anything to compete with Catherine. A December holiday special, really?' A second lamented: 'A Christmas special?! Good grief, is there NOTHING Meghan won't attempt to do better than Catherine, Princess of Wales - and fail MISERABLY at? Just when I thought we would take up a Netflix subscription again.' Other fans feared the two productions could have clashing release dates. A third wrote: 'Meghan's "Christmas Special" may clash with the Princess of Wales 'Together at Christmas' concert?! Oh I am in no doubts that Meghan would push for that date specifically!' 'So Just like Princess Catherine's Holiday special then! The difference is Megan has no Royals or family attending hers!' another commented. 'What is sad certain accounts on here will promote it if it lands on the same day as Catherine's Christmas special and give her free publicity instead of ignoring Meghan.' In 2024, Kate held her fourth festive concert at Westminster Abbey, delighting fans with her appearance after enduring what she described as 'probably the hardest year of my life'. The Princess attended the concert on December 6 alongside her husband, Prince William, 43, and three children, Prince George, 12, Princess Charlotte, 10, and Prince Louis, seven. Fans will also likely be referencing Kate's 's 2019 Christmas show, a BBC show featuring baking legend Mary Berry titled A Berry Royal Christmas special. Unlike Meghan's latest venture, the production was a charitable project featuring the Princess and Prince William joining forces with the former Great British Bake Off star to volunteer with local communities to prepare festive food over the Christmas period. The programme was warmly received at the time. It included various cooking confessions from Kate, who said she loves to bake and that she grows her own vegetables. Announcing the news of the extended creative partnership yesterday, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex said the second season of their show would include 'a new special holiday episode'. The festive programme was warmly received at the time. It included various cooking confessions from Kate, who said she loves to bake and that she grows her own vegetables. Their statement read: 'This December, join Meghan in Montecito for a magical holiday celebration,' referencing the California town where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex live with their two children. The new arrangement is a first-look deal, meaning Netflix can say yes or no to new film or TV projects before anyone else. One of the projects the Sussexes are working on Masaka Kids, A Rhythm Within - a documentary about orphaned children in Uganda, where the 'shadows of the HIV /Aids crisis linger'. There is also 'active development' on other projects with Netflix which 'span a variety of content genres', including an adaptation of romantic novel Meet Me At The Lake. Netflix has already released the first series of With Love, Meghan as well as Polo, Heart of Invictus, Live to Lead and the couple's bombshell documentary Harry & Meghan as well as being a business partner on Meghan's lifestyle brand, As Ever. Five years ago, Harry and Meghan secured a lucrative contract thought to be worth $100million (£74million) with Netflix after quitting as senior working royals in 2020. The renewed deal was described by the Sussexes - who made the announcement with Netflix - as 'extending their creative partnership' through Archewell Productions. But the new terms are understood to be worth less for Harry and Meghan than their previous contract, according to a person familiar with the deal, and they represent Netflix loosening its ties with the couple. Leading publicist Mark Borkowski told the Daily Mail: 'They have shot the golden goose of 2020 - more of a "we'll call you" than "here's the chequebook". 'It's a first-look deal, which means Netflix gets first dibs but no obligation to bankroll every semi-royal whim. I reckon Netflix is trimming fat industry-wide, so this is less carte blanche, more curated cameo. 'They're still in business together - Meghan's. As ever brand and seasonal specials keep them in the Netflix shop window but make no mistake, this is a slimmed-down sequel to the blockbuster original. So Harry and Meghan's new Netflix chapter [is] less champagne budget, more Prosecco by the glass.' Netflix said Harry & Meghan, which came out in December 2022, was a huge success with a total of 23.4million views, making it the most viewed documentary ever through its first four days and reaching the English Top 10 TV list in 85 countries. But With Love, Meghan failed to break into Netflix's top ten programmes - or even the top 300, as it ranked at number 383 in 2025 so far for the streaming giant with just 5.3million viewers across the globe since it was first broadcast in March. However, the Duchess said today: 'We're proud to extend our partnership with Netflix and expand our work together to include the As ever brand. 'My husband and I feel inspired by our partners who work closely with us and our Archewell Productions team to create thoughtful content across genres that resonates globally, and celebrates our shared vision.' Bela Bajaria, Netflix's chief content officer, said: 'Harry and Meghan are influential voices whose stories resonate with audiences everywhere. 'The response to their work speaks for itself - Harry & Meghan gave viewers an intimate look into their lives and quickly became one of our most-watched documentary series. More recently, fans have been inspired by With Love, Meghan, with products from the new As ever line consistently selling out in record time. 'We're excited to continue our partnership with Archewell Productions and to entertain our members together.' Brand and culture expert Nick Ede said: '[Netflix] know that with Meghan and Harry there will always be interest and they won't want to lose them to a rival streamer so this is a good way of keeping them as part of the Netflix family but not spending as much as they did previously, when only two of the content that was created were real winners for the streamer.' Mr Ede added: 'I think that Polo and Heart of Invictus were pretty niche shows and didn't rate well. They have probably seen the slate that archewell has created for their future productions and pitches are interesting and may be developed more for the streaming service.' As Ever is Meghan's lifestyle brand which also sells cookie mix, herb tea, flower sprinkles and jams – and launched a new Napa Valley rosé wine last Friday. In March the Duchess launched her new podcast series 'Confessions Of A Female Founder' with Lemonada Media, which included an interview with Beyonce's mother Tina Knowles. Meghan's Archetypes series about female stereotypes in 2022 ran for just one series, and was part of the Sussexes' previous multi-million-pound deal with Spotify, which ended the year after. Last month a Netflix source claimed Harry and Meghan's hopes of a new Netflix deal were 'dead' after Polo and With Love, Meghan both flopped in the ratings. The insider was quoted as saying: 'This deal is dead. She had everything going for her - name, platform, press - and the numbers were dismal. They're just waiting for the credits to roll. They're letting it expire without drama. There's no appetite for anything new.'
