New Delhi: The Union Cabinet on Wednesday passed a resolution condemning 50 years of the imposition of the Emergency by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.
In a media briefing, Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw said the Cabinet, at a meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, observed a two-minute silence as a tribute to the victims of the excesses committed during the Emergency. The Union Cabinet paid tribute to their exemplary courage and valiant resistance to the Emergency's excesses.
'The year 2025 marks 50 years of the Samvidhan Hatya Diwas, an unforgettable chapter in the history of India where the Constitution was subverted and the republic and democratic spirit of India were attacked. Federalism was undermined, and fundamental rights, human liberty, and dignity were suspended,' he said.
'The Union Cabinet reaffirmed that the people of India continue to repose unflinching faith in the Indian Constitution and the resilience of the country's democratic ethos.
It is as important for the young as it is for the old to draw inspiration from those who resisted dictatorial tendencies and stood firm to defend our Constitution and its democratic fabric. India, as the mother of democracy, stands as an example of preserving, protecting and safeguarding constitutional values. Let us as a nation renew our resolve to uphold our Constitution and its democratic and federal spirit," the minister added.
Earlier in the day, Modi called the imposition of Emergency "one of the darkest chapters in India's history" and said the values enshrined in the Constitution were set aside as the Congress "placed democracy under arrest."

SJMV Sangha starts law college in Hubballi
Hubballi-based Shree Jagadguru Moorusavir Mutt Vidyavardhak Sangha (SJMVS), which runs several educational institutions, has now established a new law college in Hubballi. It will be offering a five-year LL.B course starting this academic year. Addressing presspersons, along with honorary chairman of SJMV Sangha Arvind Kubusad, convenor of the Moorusavir Mutt High Level Committee and former MLC Mohan Limbikai said that the admission process for the five-year LL.B Integrated Programme affiliated to Karnataka State Law University (KSLU) will begin on July 1 and conclude on July 31. Mr. Limbikai said that apart from adhering to the syllabus prescribed by the KSLU, SJMVS Law College will be striving to provide the most comprehensive legal education by involving several practising advocates to guide and train students in the legal profession. The college will be temporarily functioning from the ground floor of the existing Moorusavir Mutt ITI premises and it will be shifted to Kusugal Road in Hubballi after the completion of work on the college building on the over 3 acres of land of the mutt. Construction work will commence soon, Mr. Limbikai said. He added that they have the requisite permissions from KSLU and the Bar Council of India for an intake of 50 students. Entrance examination will be organised for giving admission to the course. Mr. Kubusad said that the Bar Council of India has given permission for the college after virtual inspection of the infrastructure and amenities in the existing building. The college established with the theme, Learn the law and live the law, will strive towards making students imbibe values of democracy and the objectives of Constitution and live the noble ideas and ethics of law. Principal of the college Savita Deshpande said that students who have passed PU from any stream with 45% of marks are eligible to apply for admission to the LL.B programme. Management members of SJMV Sangha Shashidhar Sali, Sadanand Danganavar, Murugesh Yaklaspur, Lingaraj Ingalahalli, Viranna Kallur and Channabasappa Dharawadshettar were present.

International Day against Drug Abuse: Amit Shah vows ruthless war on narco cartels
New Delhi [India], June 26 (ANI): On the occasion of International Day Against Drug Abuse on Thursday, Union Home Minister Amit Shah extended greetings to all those fighting against substance abuse and reaffirmed the government's commitment to a drug-free India. In a post on X, Shah said, 'On International Day Against Drug Abuse, warm wishes to all our warriors and allies in our battle for a drug-free Bharat.' Calling drugs the 'biggest scourge for our youth,' Shah emphasised the Modi government's 'whole-of-government approach' in tackling the threat. He said the Centre had taken strong steps not only to dismantle drug networks but also to rehabilitate affected individuals. 'The Modi government is heading with a whole-of-government approach to this threat, striking narco-cartels ruthlessly and bringing back addicted youth to normal life with empathy,' the Home Minister wrote in the post. 'May this day further fortify our resolve against the menace of drug abuse,' he added. Earlier in the day, addressing the state event to mark the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking 2025, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta said that Delhi Police have arrested at least 1100 people involved in the drug trade in 2025. CM Gupta said, 'This year, in 2025, our Delhi Police has arrested at least 1100 people involved in the drug trade, cases have been registered against them, and all the narcotic drugs found have been seized...' She urged the government, police and society to work together against the drug menace in the national capital. 'The government, police, and society are all working to eradicate this, but we all need to work together as a team. I believe that when we all work together, the menace of drugs will be completely eliminated from society,' Rekha Gupta said. June 26, observed as the International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, is a United Nations International Day. This day aims to spread awareness regarding the harmful effects of drug use and to fight against drug abuse and the illegal drug trade. This day has been observed since 1989. June 26 was chosen to commemorate Lin Zexu's (Chinese political philosopher and politician) dismantling of the opium trade in Humen, Guangdong, ending on June 25, 1839, just before the First Opium War in China. Every year, a theme is chosen, and this year's theme is 'The Evidence is Clear: Invest in Prevention.' (ANI)

Union Minister Rijiju slams Congress over Emergency; unveils projects worth Rs 78 Cr in Himachal Pradesh
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 26 (ANI): Union Minister for Parliamentary Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Thursday hit out at the Congress over the 1975 Emergency, calling it a 'murder of the Constitution.' Addressing the media in Shimla on the second day of his three-day visit to Himachal Pradesh, Rijiju said, 'The Emergency imposed in 1975 was nothing less than a murder of the Constitution. It throttled the media and crushed individual and institutional freedoms.' 'Even after 50 years, we must not forget the dangers of authoritarianism. That is why the Union Cabinet passed a resolution to remind people about what really happened. Shimla is symbolically important; it was the summer capital during colonial rule, and many freedom fighters were jailed here. Today, we observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Divas' from this historic city,' Rijiju added. Further sharpening his attacks on the Congress, Kiren Rijiju said that those who once killed the Constitution are today holding its book and lecturing the nation on constitutional values. 'The people of India must recognise this hypocrisy. Everyone should read the letter of Pandit Nehru that led to the resignation of Baba Saheb Ambedkar. That letter reflects the Congress party's real character. Prime Minister Modi declared November 26 as Constitution Day to remind the nation of its founding principles. We have urged Congress to observe this day as Samvidhan Hatya Divas,' the Union Minister said. Rijiju also gave details of the projects to be started and foundation stones to be laid during his three-day visit to the region. He unveiled Rs 78 Cr sports and infrastructure schemes for the Trans-Himalayan Belt. Rijiju also unveiled a central package to promote winter and adventure sports in Himachal Pradesh's tribal districts, especially Kinnaur and Lahaul-Spiti, as part of the Centre's border-area development strategy. 'Himachal has three zones: the plains, the hill stations, and the Trans-Himalayas. We are focusing on the Trans-Himalayan belt for transformative development,' he said. The projects announced include Indoor Multi-Sports Stadium at Kalpa (foundation to be laid during visit), Green grass turf ground at Gyabung (Kinnaur) at a cost of Rs 4.80 crore, High-altitude skiing and winter sports training centre at Kaza (Lahaul-Spiti) with vocational training facilities, to be built at a cost of Rs 73.77 crore, Special sewage management scheme for high-altitude villages in Lahaul. The Union Minister also highlighted the future plans for cricket development in the region. He said, 'There will be revolutionary efforts for sports infrastructure in Lahaul-Spiti. These schemes will empower youth in the remotest parts of India.' 'Even the McMahon Line Agreement was signed in Shimla. This region has always been central to our national security and identity,' Rijju said. Responding to criticism that the Centre has neglected Himachal, Rijiju countered and said that It is just a political statement by Congress. 'The Union Government is fully committed to the development of Himachal Pradesh and its people. In 2013, Defence Minister AK Antony told Parliament there would be no development in certain border regions. Today, we are building world-class infrastructure in the same areas. The Prime Minister has directed every minister to connect directly with people, even in the remotest villages. That is how we are functioning, not with words, but with work,' he asserted. (ANI)
