Bengaluru stops salaries as India's Super League turmoil deepens
In a statement, the 2018-19 ISL champions said they had taken the decision 'in view of the uncertainty surrounding the future of the Indian Super League season'.
'Running and sustaining a football club in India has always been an uphill climb, one that we have put everything aside and made, season after season,' Bengaluru added.
'However, the lack of clarity on the League's future leaves us with no choice but to take this step.'
The ISL was put on hold after contract renewal talks between the country's football federation (AIFF) and their commercial partners, Reliance-led Football Sports Development Limited (FSDL), stalled.
Talks to renew the 2010 agreement came to a halt after India's Supreme Court asked the AIFF not to renew the deal with FSDL until it had issued an order over a separate case to implement a new constitution for the federation.
'The future and wellbeing of our players, staff and their families is of utmost importance to us, and we are in touch with them as we wait for a resolution … We urge the AIFF and FSDL to end this impasse swiftly,' Bengaluru said in its statement.
The AIFF and ISL did not immediately respond to the Reuters news agency's requests for comment.
According to reports in Indian media, eight ISL clubs will meet the AIFF this week to discuss the league's future.
Bengaluru, which employs India's all-time leading goalscorer Sunil Chhetri, said its youth teams would not be affected by the salary suspension.
Chhetri posted on social media in July to express the 'hurt, scared' feelings that he said those associated with the sport in India were experiencing due to the current uncertainty.

US tariff ‘unfair, unjustified, and unreasonable': India
Agencies India faces an ultimatum from the United States with major political and economic ramifications both at home and abroad: end purchases of Russian oil or face painful tariffs. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, leader of the world's most populous nation and its fifth-biggest economy, must make some difficult decisions. US President Donald Trump has given longstanding ally India, one of the world's largest crude oil importers, three weeks to find alternative suppliers. Levies of 25 percent already in place will double to 50 percent if India doesn't strike a deal. For Trump, the August 27 deadline is a bid to strip Moscow of a key source of revenue for its military offensive in Ukraine. 'It is a geopolitical ambush with a 21-day fuse,' said Syed Akbaruddin, a former Indian diplomat to the United Nations, writing in the Times of India newspaper. New Delhi called Washington's move 'unfair, unjustified and unreasonable'. Modi has appeared defiant. He has not spoken directly about Trump but said on Thursday 'India will never compromise' on the interests of its farmers. Agriculture employs vast numbers of people in India and has been a key sticking point in trade negotiations. It all seems a far cry from India's early hopes for special tariff treatment after Trump said in February he had found a 'special bond' with Modi. 'The resilience of US-India relations... is now being tested more than at any other time over the last 20 years,' said Michael Kugelman, from the Asia Pacific Foundation of Canada. Russia accounted for nearly 36 percent of India's total crude oil imports in 2024, snapping up approximately 1.8 million barrels of cut-price Russian crude per day. Manchester United complete Benjamin Sesko signing from RB Leipzig
Manchester United have signed Slovenia striker Benjamin Sesko from Germany's RB Leipzig on a contract until 2030, the Premier League club have announced. The transfer fee is 76.5 million euros ($89m) with 8.5 million euros ($9.9m) in bonuses. The 22-year-old, who joined Leipzig from the Austrian club RB Salzburg in 2023, scored 39 goals in 87 appearances across all competitions for the German side. 'The history of Manchester United is obviously very special, but what really excites me is the future,' Sesko said, upon completing the deal on Saturday. 'When we discussed the project, it was clear that everything is in place for this team to continue to grow and compete for the biggest trophies again soon. 'From the moment that I arrived, I could feel the positive energy and family environment that the club has created.
