Rudraprayag tragedy: Udaipur lawyer dies, four others from city missing
The accident occurred on Thursday morning when a truck reportedly rammed into the bus near Gholtir, causing it to plunge into the Alaknanda River.
The deceased lawyer was identified as Sanjay Soni (55), a resident of Bhatt Ji Ki Bawdi in Udaipur.
Soni's body was recovered nearly 7 kilometres downstream from the accident site, according to his relative Kundan Soni.
Soni's son Deepak has reached the location to assist with identification and procedures.
The deceased lawyer's wife, Chetna, his mother Sushila, and sister Ranjana are still missing.
The ill-fated journey began ten days ago as part of a Char Dham Yatra organised by Ravi Bhavsar, a tour operator from Udaipur.
Lalit Soni, a native of Gogunda, Udaipur, who runs a jewellery business in Surat, was travelling with family members, including his uncle's son.
Bhavsar is also among the missing.
Authorities continue to search for the missing pilgrims in the swift currents of the Alaknanda.
This accident during a Char Dham pilgrimage in Uttarakhand has left several families devastated.
A group of 20 pilgrims from Rajasthan, Gujarat, and Madhya Pradesh, including seven residents of Udaipur, had set out on a religious journey to Uttarakhand.
Expressing deep sorrow over the incident, Chief Minister Bhajanlal Sharma said, "The unfortunate incident of a minibus falling into a river in Rudraprayag, resulting in the loss of lives, including residents of Rajasthan and other citizens, is deeply distressing. The governments of Rajasthan and Uttarakhand are in constant touch and coordinating efforts."
The Chief Minister further added, "I pray to Baba Badrinath ji for peace to the departed souls, the safe return of the missing, and the speedy recovery of the injured."
The incident has sent shockwaves across the state, especially in Udaipur, where several families are still anxiously awaiting their loved ones.

Investigations revealed that Jiyani's associate opened a fake bank account to receive the payout and was listed as the policy nominee. Soni said Jiyani went underground after the claim was filed, but investigators continued to pursue the case. "The insurance company suspected that there were contradictions and a lot of inconsistencies in documents submitted to prove his death and suspected that he was still alive," he said. The insurance company denied his insurance claim and began looking into his documents. Police said the fraud came to light after the insurance company's legal officer lodged a complaint on Aug 22, 2024. The inquiry established that Jiyani fabricated documents and staged his death, while his friend attempted to encash the policy. SC seeks response from Centre, DGCA over series of helicopter crashes
The Supreme Court on Thursday sought responses from the Centre among others on a plea over a series of helicopter crashes, particularly in Uttarakhand's Kedarnath. A bench of Justices Vikram Nath and Sandeep Mehta issued notices to the Centre and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) and the Uttarakhand government, among others, on the plea. "The concern is over a series of helicopter crashes that have taken place, particularly towards Kedarnath," the petitioners' counsel said. The bench posted the matter after four weeks. On June 15, a helicopter carrying pilgrims from the Kedarnath shrine crashed in the forests of Gaurikund amid poor visibility, killing all seven people on board, the fifth helicopter accident on the Chardham Yatra route since the pilgrimage started on April 30. The seven casualties included a two-year-old child and the pilot, who were on board the helicopter, operated by a private firm. The civil aviation ministry said it has suspended the operations of the firm for the Char Dham Yatra and has directed the DGCA to immediately post officers from airworthiness, safety and operations to actively oversee all helicopter activity in the Kedarnath valley. On June 7, a helicopter going to Kedarnath had to make an emergency landing on the road due to a technical fault soon after take-off in which the pilot was injured but the five devotees on board were rescued safely. On May 12, a helicopter returning from Badrinath to Sersi with pilgrims on board had to make an emergency landing in a school playground in Ukhimath due to poor visibility. All pilgrims were safe. Similarly, on May 8, a helicopter going to Gangotri Dham crashed in Uttarkashi district in which six people were killed.

UP Teacher Comments On Student's 'Tilak', Activists Create Ruckus In School
A group of 50 to 60 people belonging to a Hindu outfit created a ruckus in a school in Uttar Pradesh's Ghaziabad after a teacher allegedly objected to students wearing 'tilak' (a religious mark on the forehead). The incident took place on Wednesday at the Rajkiya Balika Inter School. The furore among the Hindu organisations began last month when two sisters, identified as Manu and Soni, got admission in the school for Class 11. The classes began on July 15, but the siblings reportedly attended only two days so far - August 5 and 6. When they went to school last week, their teacher asked Manu a question that she could not answer. To this, the teacher told her to focus on her studies and that "nothing will happen by applying a tilak". However, the student also alleged that the teacher used to throw her out of the class whenever she applied a 'tilak' on her forehead. She also alleged that many other children wearing a 'tilak' were made to wipe it before entering the class. "She often told us that if we want to worship, go to a temple and not school," she said, adding that it hurt their religious sentiments. A week later, members of the Hindu organisation Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) entered the school and created a ruckus, officials said. According to the teacher, many women were a part of the group who asked her to apologise to the students over her comments on applying 'tilak'. "In our country, every religion has the freedom to wear 'tilak'. Girls from Pandit families wear it every day. What's wrong with it? Girls from Muslim families come wearing a hijab. Did you ever stop them? If someone is going to school wearing a 'tilak', then they should not be stopped. The school has decorum, and we respect it," VHP President Alok Garg said. The school's principal, Vibha Chaudhary, said they will apologise if they have made a mistake. "I was not aware of the incident till the group came in. The police came in and dispersed the crowd. Our school has an excellent academic record. If anyone feels that we have made a mistake, we will apologise," she said.
