Oil prices pause slide on US-Japan trade deal

Ammon News - Oil prices edged up in Asian trade on Wednesday after falling for three consecutive sessions as a U.S. trade deal, opens new tab with Japan signalled progress on tariffs, though gains were capped by fading hopes for a breakthrough at an EU-China summit. Brent crude futures rose 21 cents, or 0.31%, to $68.80 a barrel by 0351 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude futures gained 17 cents, or 0.26%, at $65.48 per barrel. Both benchmarks were down about 1% in the previous session after the EU said it was considering countermeasures against U.S. tariffs, as hope faded for a deal ahead of an August 1 deadline. President Donald Trump said on Tuesday that the U.S. and Japan had struck a trade deal that includes a 15% tariff on U.S. imports from Japan. He also said Japan had agreed on $550 billion in investments in the U.S. Separately, U.S. crude and gasoline stocks fell last week, market sources said, citing American Petroleum Institute figures on Tuesday. Distillate stocks rose by 3.48 million barrels, they added. Reuters

Tourism sector: Figures alone are not enough

Raad Mahmoud Al-Tal Tourism income in Jordan grew by 11.9 per cenr in the first half of 2025, reaching $3.667 billion. But looking closely, this growth is mostly because of temporary reasons, not real lasting changes in the tourism sector. The increase in income is a good sign, but it's important to remember that this is compared to the first half of last year, which was affected by wars and conflicts in the region. The effect of these problems showed clearly in June when tourism income dropped by 3.7 per cent to $619.2 million. This drop is understandable because Jordan's tourism is very sensitive to any problems in the region. Although Jordan's location is attractive when things are calm, it also makes the country vulnerable to regional problems. This raises questions about how strong the tourism sector is against outside crises. At the same time, Jordanians spent $999.7 million traveling abroad, an increase of 3.3 per cent. This is a big amount compared to the size of Jordan's economy, showing that a lot of foreign money leaves the country. Even though spending abroad dropped by 22.7 per cent in June, this does not mean the balance is better. It mostly means that recent events made Jordanians travel less. The number of tourists from Asia grew by 42.9 per cent, from Europe by 35.6 per cent, and from America by 25.8 per cent. This is a good sign and shows that Jordan is becoming a popular destination, especially for Asian tourists, thanks to promotional efforts. But the problem is not just the number of tourists. The economic benefits don't reach many local communities outside the main tourist areas—Aqaba, the Dead Sea, Petra, and Amman. Also, income from Jordanian expatriates visiting the country fell slightly by 0.8 per cent. This raises questions about how successful the government is in attracting this group, which has always been important for summer tourism. Even a small drop could signal bigger changes if not addressed. Tourism is very important for bringing foreign money and supporting the economy. But relying too much on it without a good plan to reduce risks is risky. Tourism is easily affected by political problems, so depending on it as a steady source of money is dangerous. The Ministry of Tourism is responsible for supporting and growing tourism, protecting tourist sites, organizing tourism jobs and services, making travel easier for tourists, promoting Jordan, signing agreements, and encouraging investment to keep the sector growing. But there are still problems like weak coordination with private businesses, poor infrastructure, and uneven service quality. The first half of 2025 shows some recovery in tourism income, but this doesn't mean the sector has fully recovered -especially compared to normal years before recent crises. What really matters is how stable this income is, how it's spread across the country, and whether the sector can survive changes. These are still weak points in Jordan's tourism today.
