IMD forecasts 'heavy rainfall' in Telangana till August 20

The IMD has warned of heavy rainfall at isolated places in several districts of Telangana until August 20.In its latest bulletin, the India Meteorological Department forecast "heavy to very heavy rainfall" from Sunday until 8.30 am on August 20.A 'red alert' has been issued from 8.30 am on August 18 to 8.30 am on August 19, warning of "very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall" likely at isolated locations in Mulugu, Bhadradri Kothagudem, and Mahabubabad districts.A 'red alert' indicates "extremely heavy rainfall" exceeding 20 cm in 24 hours.The IMD further warned that thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds of 30-40 kmph are likely at isolated places across all districts of the state until August 22.Heavy rains have been affecting different parts of Telangana over the past few days, causing waterlogging on roads, inundation in low-lying areas, and swollen rivulets and other water bodies. This has disrupted road connectivity between villages, sources said.

Neutral ENSO conditions to last till winter, global weather experts
The prevailing neutral phase of the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) will continue along the equatorial Pacific Ocean till the end of the upcoming winter season in the northern hemisphere, multiple global weather agencies have said. ENSO and its two phases – El Nino (warm) and La Nina (cold) – can cause extreme weather. Over India, many El Nino years have corresponded with below-average monsoon rainfall, whereas La Nina has been associated with severe winters. The US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said near-average sea surface temperatures persisted across most of the equatorial Pacific Ocean – a trend that has existed for the past few months. Early next year, NOAA said, there are chances for the development of a weak and brief La Nina before the return of ENSO neutral conditions around mid-2026. Earlier this month, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said ENSO neutral conditions would prevail through the monsoon and winter seasons. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), too, had said in its monthly ENSO bulletin that the probability of near-neutral ENSO conditions over the Pacific was high and it ranged from 50 to 68 per cent from August to April next year.

Mumbai rain: School children get stranded in a flood-like situation, Zomato agent delivers food amid waterlogging
Another day of torrential rain brought Mumbai to a halt as many parts of the city dealt with severe waterlogging. According to data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the suburban Santacruz station received over 99 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 38 mm of rainfall between Sunday and Monday morning. As the Met Department issued an Orange alert for Mumbai till August 19, videos of the city coping with the heavy rain flooded the Internet. One of the videos shows rescuers helping school children out of their bus, which got stranded amid the flood-like situation near Kings Circle, Gandhi Market. The viral clip shows Mumbai policemen navigating through knee-deep water while carrying the kids to safety. Sharing the video, X handle @mumbaimatterz wrote, 'School Kids stranded inside School buses nr KingsCircle, Gandhi Market, being rescued by @MumbaiPolice personnel & taken to safety to Matunga Police Station.' The rainfall will continue till the middle of next week as a result of which the alerts have been extended for Mumbai,' an IMD official told The Indian Express.
