Neutral ENSO conditions to last till winter, global weather experts
ENSO and its two phases – El Nino (warm) and La Nina (cold) – can cause extreme weather. Over India, many El Nino years have corresponded with below-average monsoon rainfall, whereas La Nina has been associated with severe winters.
The US-based National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said near-average sea surface temperatures persisted across most of the equatorial Pacific Ocean – a trend that has existed for the past few months.
Early next year, NOAA said, there are chances for the development of a weak and brief La Nina before the return of ENSO neutral conditions around mid-2026.
Earlier this month, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) said ENSO neutral conditions would prevail through the monsoon and winter seasons. The Indian National Centre for Ocean Information Services (INCOIS), too, had said in its monthly ENSO bulletin that the probability of near-neutral ENSO conditions over the Pacific was high and it ranged from 50 to 68 per cent from August to April next year.

Humid heat sticks to city, AQI a respite
New Delhi: Delhi reeled under hot and humid conditions on Monday, with the discomfort compounded by high moisture levels in the air. The feel-like or heat index was 47 degrees Celsius at 2.30 pm on Monday, as only some areas got very light rain. The maximum temperature was recorded at 34.9 degrees Celsius, one degree above normal. Incessant rainfall continues to lash Uttara Kannada, Dharwad districts
Following the continued incessant rainfall, the district administrations of Uttara Kannada and Dharwad have declared a holiday for anganwadi, primary and high schools and PU colleges on Tuesday as a precautionary measure. The holiday declaration applies to all taluks in Dharwad district and all taluks in Uttara Kannada district barring Mundgod taluk. Meanwhile, incessant rainfall has thrown life out of gear in the districts of Haveri, Gadag, Uttara Kannada, Davangere and Dharwad. While Davangere and Uttara Kannada districts declared a holiday for schools and colleges because of rain on Monday, it was a holiday for several schools and colleges in Dharwad district on account of being the last Monday of Shravana. Meanwhile, India Meteorological Department has sounded a red alert for the coastal taluks in Uttara Kannada till 8.30 a.m. on Wednesday. As inflow at Linganamakki reservoir has increased, the authorities have decided to release water from the reservoir at 10 a.m. on Tuesday and sounded an alert for the villages downstream. In view of this, Deputy Commissioner of Uttara Kananda K. Lakshmipriya has issued a warning covering villages in Honnavar taluk of the district. She has warned village residents against venturing near the river and water bodies. The Deputy Commissioner has also asked fishermen to take necessary precautionary measures and not to venture into the sea for fishing. Meanwhile, incessant rainfall in the district has resulted in complete damage to seven houses and partial damage to three houses, a press release said. In the last 24 hours, Ankola taluk has received rainfall of 71.3 mm, Bhatkal 93.9 mm, Haliyal 32.4 mm, Honnavar 85.6 mm, Karwar 103 mm, Kumta 103.6 mm, Mundgod 30.9 mm, Siddapur 87.8 mm, Sirsi 57.5 mm, Supa 70.2 mm, Yellapur 55 mm and Dandeli 41 mm rainfall.

Late monsoon surge brings down rain deficit in Kerala; Orange alert for three districts on August 19
Intense spells in the second half of August makes up for reduction in rainfall activity in the first two weeks Two back-to-back low-pressure systems formed over the Bay of Bengal helped Kerala bridge the rain deficit in August, with the second half of the month recording some intense spells in parts of the State. The overall rain deficit in the State had increased to 16 percent at one point in time in August after a reduction in rainfall activity across the State in the first two weeks of the month. However, the late surge helped Kerala bring down the deficit from 16 percent to 12 percent as of August 18. The State has received a total of 1,416.5 mm of rain until August 18 against the average of 1,603.7 mm of rain during this southwest monsoon period, a shortfall of 12 percent. Meanwhile, the scattered heavy spells of rain that had been lashing parts of central and north Kerala will continue for a few more days, influenced by the latest low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal. According to a weather bulletin issued by the India Meteorological Department on Monday, the well-marked low-pressure area over west central and adjoining northwest Bay of Bengal and north Andhra Pradesh-south Odisha coasts is likely to move west-northwestwards and concentrate into a depression during the next 12-hours, and cross south Odisha-north Andhra Pradesh coasts around forenoon of Tuesday. This, along with the presence of the offshore trough from south Konkan to north Kerala at the mean sea level, will help the northern and parts of central Kerala to get a few heavy spells in the coming days. The IMD has issued an orange alert for Kasaragod, Kannur, and Wayanad on Tuesday, where very heavy rainfall is likely, while a yellow alert has been issued for Kozhikode, Malappuram, Palakkad, Thrissur, Ernakulam, and Idukki. Meanwhile, the previous low-pressure area over Vidarbha and neighbourhood has become less marked.
