Another day of torrential rain brought Mumbai to a halt as many parts of the city dealt with severe waterlogging. According to data shared by the India Meteorological Department (IMD), the suburban Santacruz station received over 99 mm of rainfall, while the Colaba coastal observatory recorded 38 mm of rainfall between Sunday and Monday morning. As the Met Department issued an Orange alert for Mumbai till August 19, videos of the city coping with the heavy rain flooded the Internet.
One of the videos shows rescuers helping school children out of their bus, which got stranded amid the flood-like situation near Kings Circle, Gandhi Market. The viral clip shows Mumbai policemen navigating through knee-deep water while carrying the kids to safety.

The video prompted an array of reactions, with one commenting, 'What is the benefit of alert if we are not taking step like school closure based on alert.' Another user wrote, '@mybmc sad to know that our bmc cannot decide before hand whether to declare a red alert or not. If anything happens to school kids it will be @mybmc fault.'
Another photo captures a Zomato delivery agent standing amid heavy rain, walking through a waterlogged area. Hailing the delivery guy, a user wrote, 'Heavy rains in Mumbai, waterlogging everywhere. We can see Zomato delivery guy walking through it all to deliver food. The dedication is incredible because of people like him, someone won't sleep hungry tonight. Hats off to our delivery heroes! @zomato.'

'The heavy rainfall is being caused due to a low-pressure system that has developed over the Bay of Bengal, leading to the formation of an east-west trough extending to the Arabian Sea and severe rainfall in the Konkan coast of Maharashtra. The rainfall will continue till the middle of next week as a result of which the alerts have been extended for Mumbai,' an IMD official told The Indian Express.

Schools, Colleges Closed In Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai & Lonavala; No Holiday For Mumbai

Last Updated: School Holiday News: Schools in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala remain closed today due to heavy rains, while Mumbai schools stay open as BMC has not announced a holiday. Amid an IMD Red Alert warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, all schools, colleges, training centres, and anganwadis in Thane, Panvel, Navi Mumbai, and Lonavala will remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, 2025. However, educational institutions in Mumbai are functioning as usual after the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) clarified that no holiday had been declared for the city. Normal life across several districts has been thrown out of gear due to continuous downpours, with flood-like situations being reported in low-lying areas. On Wednesday, a message claiming that all schools and colleges in Mumbai would remain shut on August 20 due to a 'red' alert by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) went viral on social media. The fake notice, designed to look like an official post from BMC's verified account, spread rapidly across WhatsApp groups and other platforms, causing confusion among students and parents. BMC quickly issued a clarification on X (formerly Twitter), dismissing the notice as fake. 'This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms," the civic body posted, while also sharing a screenshot of the forged message. While Mumbai is on orange alert, neighbouring Raigad district is under a red alert with predictions of heavy to very heavy rainfall. IMD has also forecast heavy showers in parts of Thane and Palghar. Flight operations at Mumbai airport are likely to face delays, while local train services may also be impacted due to the rain. Commuters have been advised to plan their travel accordingly. According to meteorological reports, the intense rainfall is linked to a low-pressure area over the Bay of Bengal, coupled with strengthening monsoon winds. Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis reviewed the flood situation with the disaster management department and warned that the next 48 hours will be critical for Mumbai, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri, and Sindhudurg districts, all under varying levels of alert. view comments First Published: August 20, 2025, 08:37 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Are Mumbai schools and colleges closed today? BMC busts fake alert circulating on social media

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has dismissed as fake a message circulating on social media claiming that schools and colleges in the city and suburbs would remain closed on Wednesday, August 20, due to a 'red' alert for heavy rainfall. In an official statement shared on X, the civic body said, 'This message is fake. The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation has not issued any such information through its official social media platforms.' Fake closure notice goes viral The BMC also released an image of the forged message, which had been designed to look like an announcement from its verified handle and was widely shared on WhatsApp groups and other social media platforms. The fake post stated that all government, private, and municipal schools and colleges in Mumbai would be shut on August 20. Orange alert for Mumbai, red alert for Raigad According to the civic body, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Mumbai, predicting heavy to very heavy rainfall at isolated locations across the city, Thane, and Palghar on August 20. A red alert, however, has been issued for neighbouring Raigad district, where heavy to very heavy showers are expected at some places. The BMC urged citizens not to believe in unverified messages and to rely only on its official communication channels for updates. (with PTI inputs) TOI Education is on WhatsApp now. Follow us here.
