Message conveyed with great clarity: Jaishankar on objective of Operation Sindoor

Indian Express14 hours ago
Operation Sindoor conveyed to the world with great clarity that India will act against terrorism, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said in a statement in line with the UN Security Council calling for those responsible for the Pahalgam attacks to be brought to justice.
'What is important for us in the Quad statement, as also the statement that the Security Council had issued on April 25, is that the perpetrators of terrorism must be held accountable. They must be brought to justice,' Jaishankar said during a press conference in Washington on Wednesday.
'And that's important because we then have to communicate to the world what we did. On May 7, the objective of Operation Sindoor is that if there are terrorist attacks, we will act against the perpetrators, the supporters, the financiers, and the enablers. So that message, I think, was conveyed with great clarity,' he said.
A joint statement issued by Quad Foreign Ministers — Jaishankar, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio, Foreign Minister of Australia Penny Wong, and Japanese Foreign Minister Takeshi Iwaya — unequivocally condemned all acts of terrorism and violent extremism in all their forms and manifestations, including cross-border terrorism.
The Quad foreign ministers condemned in the 'strongest terms' the April 22 terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which left 26 people dead.
'We call for the perpetrators, organisers, and financiers of this reprehensible act to be brought to justice without any delay and urge all UN member states, in accordance with their obligations under international law and relevant UNSCRs (UN Security Council resolutions), to cooperate actively with all relevant authorities in this regard,' the joint statement said.
The UN Security Council press statement condemned the Pahalgam attack, with members of the Security Council underlining the need to hold perpetrators, organisers, financiers and sponsors of this reprehensible act of terrorism accountable and bring them to justice.
The council members stressed that those responsible for these killings should be held accountable.
India had launched Operation Sindoor targeting terror infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir in retaliation for the Pahalgam attack, whose responsibility was claimed by The Resistance Front (TRF), a front for Pakistan-based terrorist group Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT).
Jaishankar said he shared with his counterparts, in the Quad as well as globally, the nature of the terrorism challenge that India faces and has confronted over multiple decades, and 'that we are very resolved today to respond to it very firmly and that we have the right to defend ourselves'.
Apart from the Quad discussions, Jaishankar said he had a good bilateral meeting with Rubio and the two leaders 'essentially did a stock-taking of the last six months' and the path looking ahead.
'This included a discussion on trade and investment, technology, defence and security, energy and on mobility,' he said, adding that he had separate meetings with Secretary of Defence Pete Hegseth and Energy Secretary Chris Wright.
To a question on the US plan to impose a 500 per cent tariff on imports from countries buying Russian oil under a bill by Senator Lindsey Graham, Jaishankar said that any development happening in the US Congress is of interest to India 'if it impacts our interest or could impact our interest'.
The Indian Embassy and officials have been in touch with Graham over the issue, he said.
'I think our concerns and our interests in energy security have been made conversant to him. So we'll then have to cross that bridge when we come to it, if we come to it,' Jaishankar said.

India Warns Against China's Maritime Aggression, Says A Stable South China Sea Is Vital for Peace External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar has firmly voiced India's concern over rising tensions in the South China Sea during the Quad Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Washington. He emphasized that the waterway is an "issue of great concern" and of strategic interest for all Quad nations, including India, given its critical role in global trade and maritime security. India joined the US, Japan, and Australia in condemning China's increasing militarization and coercive activities in the region. The joint Quad statement denounced unilateral actions that aim to alter the status quo by force, particularly in disputed areas, including the unsafe use of water cannons and ramming tactics. India reaffirmed its commitment to upholding international law, especially UNCLOS, and maintaining freedom of navigation, overflight, and unimpeded lawful commerce. Jaishankar reiterated that the peace, sovereignty, and territorial integrity of the Indo-Pacific cannot be compromised. India's stand signals a stronger alignment with like-minded nations to deter China's expansionist ambitions. #southchinasea #china #india #indiaquad #jaishankar #quad #chinamaritimetensions #freedomofnavigation #quad2025 #indo pacific #indiausrelations #uncos #chinathreat #toi #toibharat #bharat #trending #breakingnews #indianews 3.4K views | 13 hours ago

Israeli Likud party ministers urge Netanyahu to annex West Bank

Cabinet ministers in Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's Likud party called on Wednesday for Israel to annex the Israeli-occupied West Bank before the Knesset recesses at the end of the month. They issued a petition ahead of Netanyahu's meeting next week with U.S. President Donald Trump, where discussions are expected to centre on a potential 60-day Gaza ceasefire and hostage release deal with Hamas. The petition was signed by 15 cabinet ministers and Amir Ohana, speaker of the Knesset, Israel's parliament. There was no immediate response from the prime minister's office. Strategic Affairs Minister Ron Dermer, long a confidant of Netanyahu, did not sign the petition. He has been in Washington since Monday for talks on Iran and Gaza. "We ministers and members of Knesset call for applying Israeli sovereignty and law immediately on Judea and Samaria," they wrote, using the biblical names for the West Bank captured by Israel in the 1967 Middle East war. Their petition cited Israel's recent achievements against both Iran and Iran's allies and the opportunity afforded by the strategic partnership with the U.S. and support of Trump. It said the October 7, 2023, Hamas-led attack on Israel demonstrated that the concept of Jewish settlement blocs alongside the establishment of a Palestinian state poses an existential threat to Israel. 'The task must be completed, the existential threat removed from within, and another massacre in the heart of the country must be prevented,' the petition stated. Most countries regard Jewish settlements in the West Bank, many of which cut off Palestinian communities from one another, as a violation of international law. With each advance of Israeli settlements and roads, the West Bank becomes more fractured, further undermining prospects for a contiguous land on which Palestinians could build a sovereign state long envisaged in Middle East peacemaking. Israel's pro-settler politicians have been emboldened by the return to the White House of Trump, who has proposed Palestinians leave Gaza, a suggestion widely condemned across the Middle East and beyond.

India reinstates geo-blocks on Pakistani celebrity accounts

This latest move follows the Union Ministry of Home Affairs' recommendation to block 16 Pakistan-based YouTube channels after the recent act of terrorism in Pahalgam. The Ministry alleged that these channels spread communally sensitive and provocative content as well as false information that targets India, its security agencies and armed forces. Besides the YouTube channels, social media profiles of numerous public figures from Pakistan, including actors Saba Qamar, Mahira Khan, Ahad Raza Mir, Yumna Zaidi, Danish Taimoor, Fawad Khan, Hania Aamir, and Mawra Hocane remain geo-blocked in India. Moreover, the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting (MIB) has told Indian OTT platforms, digital intermediaries, and media streaming services to stop distributing web series, songs, podcasts, films, and other media content hailing from Pakistan. The Ministry's advisory mentioned national security as the primary concern.
