LUTON TOWN midfielder Liam Walsh avoided a five-match ban after a straight red card seemingly HELPED him avoid a stint on the sidelines.
Walsh, 27, was shown a straight red for violent conduct during Luton's 1-0 win over Coventry City at the weekend.

Having already been booked earlier in the game, Walsh shoved Coventry defender Luis Binks in the 68th minute of the Championship clash.
Referee Oliver Langford appeared to deem the push to be an act of violence and instead of showing Walsh a second yellow, he opted to show a straight red.
That decision meant that Luton were able to appeal the red - something that wouldn't have been an option for two yellow cards.
The Hatters' appeal was successful, over-turning what would have been a five-match ban for Walsh following his two previous red cards earlier in the campaign.

Had referee Langford issued Walsh a second yellow card then he would have been sent off without the ability to appeal the decision and would have subsequently received a one-match ban.
Now the former Everton academy graduate will face now suspension and is available to play in Luton's final game of the season as they scrap to stay afloat in the Championship.
Luton, who were only relegated from the Premier League last season, sit just one point above the drop in the Championship and know that win over West Brom will keep them up on Saturday.
Other fans have been left incensed by Walsh's availability for the West Brom game, claiming that the midfielder has got away without a ban because of a technicality over the straight red card.
Luton Town Statement
Here's what Luton Town had to say about their appeal...
"We are delighted to confirm that the Club's appeal against midfielder Liam Walsh's straight red card during last Saturday's win over Coventry City has been upheld.
"A Football Association appeal hearing was held yesterday afternoon to rule on referee Oli Langford's decision to dismiss the 27-year-old after Sky Blues defender Luis Binks went to ground in the 68th minute of the Town's 1-0 victory at Kenilworth Road.
"The FA statement says: 'Luton Town's Liam Walsh will be available for their next five matches after a claim of wrongful dismissal was upheld by an independent Regulatory Commission. The midfielder was sent off for violent conduct on Saturday, 26 April, during their EFL Championship match against Coventry City.'
"We look forward to seeing Walshy back in action at West Brom on Saturday!"

On social media, one fan wrote: "So a player that should've been sent off for a second yellow has his ban overturned and yet [Isaiah] Jones who got booked (and should have been sent off) won't get a retrospective ban?"
While another added: "Very lucky man, should've been a second yellow, rather than a straight red.
We live INSIDE Luton Town's famous entrance – footballs smash our windows but there are some surprising perks
"So sending off was right, and now because of the poor decision by the ref, he now gets to play and not face the 1 game suspension he should have regardless."
A third posted: "Irony is the incompetent ref has done Walsh a favour by incorrectly giving him a red rather than correctly a (non overturnable) second yellow".
And a fourth even labelled the PGMOL and the FA as "Incompetent fools".

Tottenham turn to French winger as Savinho chase proves difficult

Tottenham have been forced to look elsewhere in their pursuit of a new winger, with Manchester City's valuation of Savinho remaining too high. Spurs were keen on City's Brazilian star, with the 21-year-old reportedly open on a move to north London, where he would be likely to enjoy more game time. However, Manchester City are sticking to their £60m asking price for the Brazil international and Tottenham were not planning on paying that much for him. Manchester City paid just over £30m for him a year ago and after just one Premier League goal in 29 appearances in his first season, Spurs may have been justified in expecting his valuation to be lower than the £60m mark. However, they are now looking at other targets, with the Independent reporting that Tottenham's attention has turned to Monaco's Maghnes Akliouche. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. The 23-year-old came through the youth ranks at Monaco and made his senior debut for the club in 2021. Akliouche has been a regular in the first team over the last couple of seasons, making 31 appearances in 2023-24 and 43 outings over the last campaign. He started the new campaign with a goal in the 3-1 win over Le Havre in Ligue 1 on Saturday. Spurs consider Akliouche as a cheaper option than Savinho, but there might not be a great deal in it, with the young forward under contract until 2028. The Frenchman was linked with a number of clubs earlier in the transfer window by L'Equipe, including Spurs' fierce rivals Arsenal, and the French publication reported that Monaco would too want around £60m. Speaking in April, Monaco boss Adi Hutter acknowledged that there will likely be a lot of interest in his player this summer and said he is ready to make a step up. 'He is already playing at a top club,' the manager said of the winger. 'We are all happy with what he has done over the last two years. He made a big, big step in the right direction. 'I can imagine that the club is receiving some offers from him. He is 23, and I don't see many players with the same skills as Akliouche. When you ask me, he is ready to make the next step. We will see what happens with Maghnes. 'We are proud that we brought a young player from the academy to become a performance player at the club and then to maybe become a top top player at a top top club.' Savinho missed Manchester City's Premier League opener against Wolves on Saturday through injury, but Pep Guardiola said ahead of the campaign that he hopes the 'extraordinary' player stays. More Trending 'I don't know,' the Spaniard said on whether Savinho will stay at City. 'Tottenham in that case or any other club who wants a player should call the club. 'I am only concerned right now that Savinho will be with us for the rest of the season and hopefully many, many years because at 21 years old, with the potential he has, he plays a lot of minutes. He has to improve in the final decisions but he is an extraordinary player. 'Otherwise he would not have played more than 3,000 minutes last season. 'But in the end the desire of the players is above everything. Then they have to find an agreement with the club. If they don't make an agreement, the player will be here because the club spent money on that player.' Napoli monitoring Man Utd striker and Chelsea forward after Romelu Lukaku blow

Napoli are monitoring Manchester United striker Rasmus Hojlund and Chelsea forward Nicolas Jackson after Romelu Lukaku's injury blow. Lukaku is set for a long spell on the sidelines after suffering a thigh injury in the Italian club's 2-1 pre-season victory over Olympiacos on Thursday. The 32-year-old scored 14 goals and registered 10 assists as Napoli clinched the Serie A title under head coach Antonio Conte last season. Lukaku's injury has seen Napoli change their transfer plans with the club now looking to bring in a new striker before the summer window closes. Napoli have entered the race to sign Hojlund – according to The Guardian – but face competition from AC Milan and Premier League club Fulham. Metro's new weekly football newsletter: In The Mixer. Exclusive analysis, FPL tips and transfer talk sent straight to your inbox every Friday – sign up, it's an open goal. United are happy to offload Hojlund, who they signed in a £72m deal from Atalanta in 2023, after recruiting Benjamin Sesko from RB Leipzig. Napoli are interested in a loan deal for Hojlund, which could potentially see him link up with former United midfielder Scott McTominay. The Italian champions are also considering an approach for Chelsea forward Jackson, with talks 'expected to take place' in the coming days. That's according to The Telegraph, who report that Napoli have a 'close' relationship with Jackson's representatives. Chelsea are open to offers for Jackson after bringing in two new strikers this summer – Joao Pedro from Brighton and Liam Delap from Ipswich. Similar to the situation with Hojlund, Napoli would face a battle to land Jackson given other clubs are looking at potential deals for the forward. Jackson has attracted interest from the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, AC Milan, Juventus and Bayern Munich this summer. The Senegal international has conjured up 30 goals and 12 assists in 81 games for Chelsea since he joined the club in a £32m deal from Villarreal. Hojlund, meanwhile, has scored 26 times and provided six assists across 95 matches for United. More Trending The Denmark international was left out of United's squad for the team's first Premier League game of the season against Arsenal on Sunday. Fulham have reportedly 'sounded out' United over a potential move for Hojlund if they end up losing Rodrigo Muniz in the summer window. Muniz has been linked with a £40m move to Atalanta – although a deal is thought to have hit somewhat of a stumbling block. If Muniz does join Atalanta, though, then Hojlund is one of the players Fulham are considering as a replacement for the Brazilian. Newcastle in talks to sign Premier League striker as Alexander Isak to Liverpool saga continues

Newcastle star Alexander Isak has long been linked with a move to Premier League rivals Liverpool and a striker already netting goals in England could be drafted in as his replacement Newcastle are in talks over a potential deal for Wolves striker Jorgen Strand Larsen as they attempt to sign a replacement for Alexander Isak. The Swedish forward remains out of action for the Magpies after requesting to leave the club. ‌ He has yet to train with his first-team colleagues, while he did not play in Newcastle 's Premier League season opener against Aston Villa. Liverpool remain interested but are yet to agree a deal with Newcastle. ‌ While that situation rolls on, Eddie Howe 's side are looking for a possible replacement and have identified a current Premier League forward as an option. According to The Athletic, Wolves striker Strand Larsen is of interest to the North East side. ‌ Talks are reportedly ongoing via intermediaries, with discussions yet to get underway between clubs. Strand Larsen would be keen on a potential move, but is not actively seeking to leave Wolves as it stands, with talks at an early stage. Strand Larsen, 25, joined Wolves last summer on loan from Celta Vigo and after 14 goals across his debut campaign, they signed him permanently for a reported fee of €30million (£26m). He put pen to paper on a five-year deal at Molineux. Away from Strand Larsen, Newcastle still remain interested in Brentford star Yoane Wissa but are so far refusing to match the Bees' £60m asking price. Asked about any more transfer business, Newcastle boss Eddie Howe said: 'We are still active in the window and we'd love to add one or two players but it really is quality over quantity. 'We don't want to just add and I don't think we need to do too much more. We are strong and in certain areas we've got good depth and will be able and resilient enough to get through a long, tough season. The league is so hard and the challenges are so big in front of us.' On Isak in particular, Howe has urged for an end to the saga one way or the other. He said: 'We would like a resolution. I am talking about myself, I am sure the ownership, and the players. We need that clarity. You don't need any distraction. But I am not in control of that. I think only one person really (Isak) can control that.' ‌ He added: 'This season, any season, every season, is going to be hard enough. You don't need any kind of distraction to swerve your thoughts, to unbalance what we're doing. 'I hope it's resolved quickly, because it's news around us all the time. The players have managed to shut that out and perform. We have to continue to do that.'
