India Asia Cup 2025 Squad Announcement Live Update: Will Shubman Gill and Yashasvi Jaiswal make the cut in India's squad?
Gill has already established himself as a formidable force in ODIs, accumulating 2,775 runs and 22 fifty-plus scores in 55 matches. Reports suggest he could potentially return to the T20I team as vice-captain and might be in line for ODI leadership once current captain Rohit Sharma retires.
In his most recent T20 appearance during IPL 2025, Gill demonstrated his prowess by scoring 650 runs at a strike rate of nearly 156, including six fifties in 15 matches, finishing as the fourth-highest run-getter.
Gill's T20I career has shown steady improvement. He concluded 2024 with 266 runs in eight T20Is at an average of 38.00 and a strike rate of 133, including two fifties during the Zimbabwe series. His overall T20I statistics stand at 578 runs in 21 matches at an average of 30.42 and a strike rate exceeding 139.
The scheduling complexity poses a significant challenge for selectors. The Asia Cup final concludes on September 28, with home Tests against West Indies beginning October 2. This tight schedule requires careful consideration in team selection.
India's T20I performance has been remarkable since their T20 World Cup victory, winning 17 out of 20 bilateral series. During Gill's absence, several players have strengthened their positions in the team.
Abhishek Sharma has particularly impressed, scoring 279 runs against England with a strike rate of 220, including a spectacular 135 off 54 balls at Wankhede. Since the last T20 World Cup, he has amassed 1,363 runs in 42 matches at an average of 34.94 and a strike rate exceeding 198.
Tilak Varma has also shown consistent performance, scoring 1,200 runs in 36 matches at an average of 50.00 and a strike rate of 153.84 since the last T20 World Cup. He recorded two centuries during the South Africa tour.
Sanju Samson has reinvented himself as an opener alongside Abhishek, scoring 908 runs in 31 T20s at an average of 33.62 and a strike rate of 157.09 since the last T20 World Cup.
Captain Suryakumar Yadav has contributed 1,107 runs in T20s at an average of 36.90 and a strike rate of 161.13, though his international form has declined recently.
Gill's recent T20 statistics remain impressive, with 893 runs in 22 matches at an average of 47.00 and a strike rate over 147 since the last T20 World Cup.
Yashasvi Jaiswal, who like Gill last played T20I in July 2024, presents another strong candidacy with 723 runs in 23 T20Is, including a century and five fifties at a strike rate exceeding 164.
The current Samson-Abhishek opening combination makes it challenging to accommodate both Gill and Jaiswal in the playing XI. With a 15-member squad limit for the Asia Cup and World Cup, selecting all four players - Abhishek, Samson, Gill, and Jaiswal - appears unlikely, considering the need for backup players in other roles.
The final selection may come down to choosing between Jaiswal and Gill, with Samson holding an advantage as a wicketkeeper-batsman. The selectors will need to evaluate who can make a more significant impact in the upcoming tournaments.

Gill named vice-captain, Bumrah included
Mumbai: Test skipper Shubman Gill was on Tuesday appointed India's T20 vice-captain for next month's Asia Cup where Jasprit Bumrah will also be there to bolster the team's bowling attack even as a strong contender like IPL-winning captain Shreyas Iyer missed out due to abundance of talent in the format. The 25-year-old Gill's last T20 International match was against Sri Lanka at Pallekele in 2024 and he has now replaced Axar Patel as the deputy of skipper Suryakumar Yadav in the 15-strong squad. Asia Cup begins on September 9 and India is placed in Group A of alongside Pakistan, Oman, and the UAE. Gill's inclusion was hardly a surprise after a stupendous run in the recent Test rubber against England where he scored four hundreds in the drawn five-match series. 'Gill's form in England was something we expected but he exceeded it all,' chief selector Ajit Agarkar said during the squad announcement press conference here. However, the management will have to ponder over Gill's batting slot during the continental showpiece because Abhishek Sharma and Sanju Samson have forged an effective pair at the top. Agarkar looked at it as a delightful problem of plenty rather than a headache. 'There are more options (for top order) now and Shubman has been in a great form anyway. When they get to Dubai, they can decide on the playing XI according to the opposition and the conditions,' said the former India pacer. But the team think tank has the option of pushing Samson down to the middle-order, where the Kerala batter batted quite often in the past, and gave Gill the opening slot. Agarkar hinted as much. 'Sanju was playing because Shubman and Yashasvi were not available at that point (and) so was Abhishek. (But) Abhishek's performances clearly makes it hard to leave him out. Plus, his bowling is handy,' he said. 'Like I said, he (Shubman) was (the) vice-captain the last time he played T20 cricket. That was after the last World Cup so even at that point, clearly we were thinking along those lines. 'Now that he's available, at least he (Suryakumar) has two options. It's their headache to pick the batting lineup (now); ours was to pick the 15 and so. But we've got some real depth as far as T20 cricket is concerned and we are very happy with it,' he added. Bumrah returns There were some lingering doubts on Bumrah's availability largely due to the proximity to the home Test series against the West Indies in October. The Asia Cup final is scheduled on September 28 in Dubai, while the first Test against the touring Caribbeans is set to begin on October 2 at Ahmedabad. But the selectors opted to pick him nonetheless and this will be Bumrah's first T20 tournament since last year's World Cup. Left-arm wrist spinner Kuldeep Yadav too has been drafted in, while Jitesh Sharma will be the back-up wicketkeeper batter. Agarkar said Jitesh has evolved a lot as a T20 batter in the last year. The wicketkeeper batter was in good form for Royal Challengers Bengaluru in the IPL 2025, often chipping in with vital runs down the order. The sentiment was shared by Surya. Yashasvi Jaiswal was among the five standby players chosen by the selectors. The other four are: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag and Dhruv Jurel. The all-rounder's duty will be shared by Hardik Pandya, Axar and Shivam Dube. India squad for Asia Cup: Suryakumar Yadav (captain), Shubman Gill (vice-captain), Abhishek Sharma, Hardik Pandya, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Jitesh Sharma, Shivam Dube, Arshdeep Singh, Sanju Samson, Harshit Rana, Tilak Varma, Rinku Singh, Varun Chakravarthy, Kuldeep Yadav. Standbys: Prasidh Krishna, Washington Sundar, Riyan Parag, Dhruv Jurel, Yashasvi Jaiswal.

Women's ODI WC squad: Renuka picked, Shafali dropped
Fit-again pacer Renuka Singh Thakur was on Tuesday included in India's squad for the Women's ODI World Cup at home along with top-order batter Pratika Rawal but the big-hitting Shafali Verma was left out. The squad will be led by Harmanpreet Kaur with Smriti Mandhana, who was also present at the selection meeting here at the BCCI headquarters, as her deputy in the ICC event which begins on September 30. The selectors also announced the squad for the three ODIs against Australia which precedes the World Cup with only one change in both the sides. The series begins on September 14. Rawal, who has done exceptionally well in 14 ODIs, was chosen ahead of hard-hitting opener Shafali as the latter was excluded from both, with chairperson of selectors Neetu David saying the right-hander remains in their focus. 'Shafali played the Australia A series. She's in the system, it is not like that she's not. We've got our eyes on her. Hope she plays a lot more and garners experience, it'll help serve India in the 50-overs format in the future. We want a long career from Shafali,' Neetu said. All-rounder Amanjot Kaur has been given additional time to recover from her unspecified injury as she remains at the Centre of Excellence ahead of the World Cup, and in her place Sayali Satghare was named in the squad to face Australia as the solitary change in the two squads. 'She's one of the important players, she's at (the) COE, working on a few small niggles. We've rested her for the Australia series so that she can fully be available for the World Cup,' skipper Harmanpreet said. Renuka has been out of action since March and missed the ODI tri-series in Sri Lanka followed by the tour of England, but the right-arm pacer is back in the side to lead the attack. 'Renuka has been a precious player for us. She had (some) niggles and been out of the game, but is now available. She is (one of) our main players. This is a main event and it is great that she is a part of the team,' Neetu said. Besides Renuka, India have the young seamer Kranti Goud and Arundhati Reddy in the pace attack, which could also feature Amanjot. India Women's squads: For World Cup: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (wk), Kranti Goud, Amanjot Kaur, Radha Yadav, Shree Charani, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Sneh Rana. For ODIs against Australia: Harmanpreet Kaur (c), Smriti Mandhana (vc), Pratika Rawal, Harleen Deol, Deepti Sharma, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh Thakur, Arundhati Reddy, Richa Ghosh (wk), Kranti Goud, Sayali Satghare, Radha Yadav, Shree Charani, Yastika Bhatia (wk), Sneh Rana.

Preity Zinta's team win last ball thriller, RCB star Tim David smashes…
St Lucia Kings captain David Wiese after team's win in CPL 2025 match. (Photo: CPL/Getty Images) Defending champions Saint Lucia Kings posted a thrilling last-ball win over St Kitts & Nevis Patriots in their Caribbean Premier League (CPL) 2025 match in Basseterre on Wednesday. Needing 201 to win, the Patriots just failed to chase down the target and fell short by three runs. The match went down to the final over by Bollywood star Preity Zinta co-owned Kings franchise and their captain David Wiese held their nerve. The match came down to the final delivery with Bidaisee and the Patriots requiring four to win off Wiese's last ball. Wiese nailed his yorker for most of the over but missed his length slightly off the crucial delivery to put one in the slot. Navin duly bunted down towards the boundary at long off only for the towering Tim David to pull off an ice-veined catch to give Kings victory by three runs and break Patriot hearts in the process. Preity Zinta's St Lucia Kings are the defending champions in the CPL. Her Punjab Kings team also reached the IPL 2025 final this year. 'We got a little bit too close in the end. Just glad we pulled that one out of the bag. It was a decent effort to get to 200, but we also know that in this field, 200 is probably just on par. So I think we did leave a couple in there. We didn't quite capitalise on those death overs. But I thought Johnson Charles batted beautifully to get us off to that start, and then Roston Chase and Tim David in the middle there just showed what they could do,' Wiese said after the match. RCB star Tim David carries on sparkling form Royal Challengers Bengaluru and Australia batter Tim David carried on his brilliant form in T20I cricket into the CPL 2025 season as well. David smashed 46 off 23 balls with 5 sixes and 1 four. He put on 86 runs for the fourth wicket with West Indies all-rounder Roston Chase. Chase was named player of the match for scoring 61 off 38 deliveries with the bat and cementing an all-round performance with 2/27 with the ball, his wily spin economical as ever and pocketing the wickets of Rilee Rossouw and Patriots skipper Jason Holder. 'It was a bit nerve-racking!' said Chase post-match. 'I think we made it a hard victory. I thought we could have won it a bit more outright, but I'm still grateful for the two points.' St Kitts & Nevis Patriots slump to third loss With the momentum shifting back and forth all match it was a bitter pill for the Patriots to lose at the last after Bidaisee played such a spectacular maiden CPL innings to finish with scoring 50 runs off just 36 balls to see the game go right down to the wire. The loss sees the Patriots with just one win in four matches and three defeats on the bounce. The Kings head to the top of the CPL table on net run rate despite their first match against the Falcons being abandoned due to rain.
