Education sector in A.P. is in crisis, says Sailajanath

The Hindu2 days ago
YSR Congress Party (YSRCP) leader and former Minister Sake Sailajanath has accused the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government led by Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu of pushing the education sector in Andhra Pradesh into a deep crisis.
Addressing a press conference at the YSRCP central office near here on Friday, Mr. Sailajanath accused the government of neglecting students and promoting corporate interests. Over ₹6,400 crore in fee reimbursement and hostel dues remains unpaid, causing widespread distress among students. 'There are ₹4,200 crore pending fee reimbursement dues across six quarters and ₹2,200 crore in Vasathi Deevena arrears for two years,' he alleged.
Mr. Sailajanath called Education Minister Nara Lokesh's statements on reimbursements contradictory and misleading. 'Despite claims of disbursing ₹788 crore and releasing more funds, students haven't received a single rupee,' he alleged, terming Lokesh's promises as 'blatant lies.'
Highlighting the previous YSRCP government's record, he said ₹18,663 crore was spent on higher education and ₹4,275 crore on Vasathi Deevena. He credited the late Y.S. Rajasekhara Reddy for initiating the transformative fee reimbursement policy.
He also criticised that recent policy changes that categorise students as non-local based on where they studied Intermediate. On the Talliki Vandanam scheme, he alleged deception, noting that despite promises of ₹15,000, many mothers received only ₹8,000–9,000.
Mr. Sailajanath accused the government of favouring private institutions linked to its leadership, marginalising poor, Dalit, and minority students. He questioned the Chief Minister's planned visit to Singapore, suggesting misplaced priorities amid student distress.

YSRCP accuses Andhra govt of large-scale land irregularities in Vizag

Visakhapatnam, Jul 27 (PTI) YSRCP leader and former minister Gudivada Amarnath on Sunday accused the TDP-led coalition government of 'large-scale land irregularities" and said it was behaving like a 'real estate agency" while allotting public lands to associates, firms and realtors at 'unjustifiably" low prices here. He alleged that the state government diverted prime land to newly incorporated firms with no credentials, undermining previous IT development plans initiated under the YSRCP regime. 'The TDP-led coalition government has committed massive irregularities in land allocations in Visakhapatnam since the government was formed," Amarnath said while addressing a press conference. He alleged that private companies received valuable land at rates as low as Rs 50 lakh to Rs 1 crore per acre, calling it a 'quid pro quo'. He noted the land deals had created no IT jobs for Andhra's youth. The former minister further alleged that Chief Minister N Chandrababu Naidu and IT Minister Nara Lokesh were directly overseeing these land deals, and that public land was being 'looted" to benefit their associates. The YSRCP leader linked Naidu's frequent visits to Singapore to alleged corruption and old ties with tainted individuals there. Amarnath said that the YSRCP would launch a mass movement against the land scam and hold the Naidu-led coalition government accountable for allegedly diverting public wealth for private gains. Meanwhile, there was no immediate reaction from the ruling TDP. PTI MS GDK KH view comments First Published: July 27, 2025, 23:15 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Minister slams Rahul-Ambedkar comparison

Patna: BJP functionary and minister Janak Ram on Sunday lashed out at Congress's Udit Raj for likening Rahul Gandhi to Dr B R Ambedkar, describing the comparison as "an insult" and demanding an apology. "Rahul has been a failed leader in the true sense," Janak Ram said. "In Indian politics, he is remembered as a failed leader. Congress never respected Babasaheb and comparing him with anyone is an insult to Ambedkar." The controversy erupted after Udit Raj posted on X on Saturday, "OBCs will have to think that history does not give opportunities for progress again and again. They should follow and support what Rahul Gandhi said at the Talkatora Stadium conference. If they do so, then Rahul Gandhi will prove to be the second Ambedkar for them." Responding strongly, Janak Ram accused the Congress of exploiting marginalised communities. "Despite being in power for over six decades, Congress treated the Dalit and OBC communities merely as a vote bank. It never worked honestly for their welfare," he said. "In fact, Congress betrayed these communities, and the public will never forgive them. This is the same Congress which delayed conferring the Bharat Ratna on Ambedkar but wasted no time in securing the country's highest civilian award for its own family," the BJP minister added.
