City 7th slowest in India in commute crawl

Time of India22-07-2025
Ahmedabad: Daily commute in Ahmedabad has become a test of patience. Arterial lifelines like SG Road, CG Road, and Ashram Road are now synonymous with gridlock, where traffic barely crawls and horns speak louder than engines.
During weekday peak hours, commuters in Ahmedabad and Mumbai, both clock an average of 29 minutes to travel 10km, according to TomTom, a data aggregating comprehensive system that collects and analyzes real-world traffic conditions using anonymized GPS data. This makes Ahmedabad the seventh slowest city in India. Kolkata is the most slowest nationally (35 minutes). In Hyderabad, it takes 32 minutes and in Chennai, the time taken to cover the distance is 30 minutes.
And, the difference between Kolkata and Ahmedabad's commute time is a mere six minutes.
Globally while Kolkata is second for traffic congestion, Ahmedabad's rank is 43rd, while Mumbai is 39th owing to its higher annual rush-hour time. Annual rush hour time refers to the total number of hours a commuter spends in traffic congestion during peak hours over the course of a year. According to the data system, Ahmedabad's annual rush hour time stands at 73 hours, significantly lower than Bengaluru's 117 hours, Mumbai's 103 hours or Kolkata's 110.
Yet, the city's ranks at 43rd globally.

The city's traffic hot zones stretch from Vastrapur and Juhapura in the west to Lal Darwaja and Kalupur in the east, where morning speeds dip to 18.8 kmph, falling further to 17.4 kmph in the evening. "Even if I leave early, I never feel in control of how long I'll take to reach, especially with factors like AMTS buses bullying traffic or scattered two-wheelers driving painfully slowly.
The roads are chaotic, and planning around traffic feels like trying to predict the weather," adds Vatsalya Shah, 34, an administrative executive from Ambawadi.
In central neighborhoods like Paldi, Gymkhana, and Danapith, commuters experience the city-wide average. But step outside the core — towards Sarkhej, Ambli, Vijay Park, Vikram Nagar, Asarwa, Rakhial, Ramol, Isanpur, or Ganesh Nagar—and the pace picks up. Travel times in these outer zones range from 18 to 23 minutes, revealing a paradox: The farther you live from the city's heart, the faster you move through it.

As free bus travel for women rolls out on Aug. 15, A.P. govt. mulls aid for auto drivers

As the Andhra Pradesh government is all set to roll out the Stree Shakti scheme, offering free bus travel for women in the APSRTC services starting August 15, it is also preparing a new assistance scheme for auto drivers that will combine the Central government programmes with additional State-level benefits. Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu on Tuesday directed the officials to conduct a comprehensive study, stressing that livelihood security for key transport sector workers must be a priority alongside new welfare initiatives. The announcement was made during a review meeting at the Secretariat, where Mr. Naidu assessed the final preparations for the Stree Shakti scheme. The Chief Minister, who will formally launch the initiative at Pandit Nehru Bus Station in Vijayawada, emphasised that crowd management, polite conduct, and women's safety must remain top priorities. Efficient management With passenger numbers expected to surge after the scheme launch, Mr. Naidu said that traffic flow must be managed efficiently, bus capacity scaled up, and passengers treated with courtesy. He insisted there should be no inconvenience to commuters and that regular feedback be collected to fine-tune the scheme. The Chief Minister also instructed that some services be provided through a service outsourcing agency to ensure flexibility and efficiency. Facilities He ordered that ePOS machines be equipped with GPS and linked to the State's RTGS system, enabling real-time tracking and faster resolution of issues. Bus stations, he said, must be kept clean and toilets cleaned every two hours under supervision. RO water plants should be installed in all stations, and ongoing repair and painting works, costing ₹30 crore, must be completed by December. New fans and seating should be installed where required, and RTC staff must remain on hand round the clock to assist passengers. To prevent breakdowns, officials confirmed that maintenance checks have been strengthened as additional services will be deployed. Women will be able to travel free of cost in Palle Velugu, Ultra Palle Velugu, City Ordinary, Express, and Metro Express buses. Software upgrades to enable zero-fare ticket issuance will be completed by August 14, with staff already trained for the rollout.

This facility, already operational at Visakhapatnam and Duvvada stations, aims to streamline last-mile connectivity for rail commuters. Dedicated prepaid counters have been set up at these stations, enabling passengers, pilgrims and tourists to pay fares in advance for their destinations. This transparent process eliminates fare negotiations and ensures passengers know the exact amount payable before starting their journey. The service at Simhachalam railway station was inaugurated by Divisional Railway Manager, Waltair, Lalit Bohra and City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi in the presence of members from the Sri Varaha Lakshmi Narasimha Swami Auto Drivers Welfare Association and officials from the railway and police departments. Over 20 auto-rickshaws are currently associated with the service. Speaking on the occasion, Lalit Bohra highlighted that 'This system offers passengers a clear fare structure, assuring transparency and a secure journey within city limits.' City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi mentioned that all vehicles in the prepaid service are equipped with GPS tracking systems to enhance passenger safety under the surveillance of Andhra Pradesh Police.
