‘Lilo & Stitch' movie review: A rumbustious, out-of-this-world adventure

The Hindu23-05-2025
Chris Sanders' and Dean DeBlois' Lilo & Stitch (2002) telling the story of a wildly destructive blue alien who lands in Hawaii to discover the meaning of family was hailed for its charm and humour, and Disney's live action reboot retains the wit and warmth of the original.
Lilo & Stitch (English)
Director: Dean Fleischer Camp
Starring: Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, Maia Kealoha
Run time: 108 minutes
Storyline: A destructive alien lands on earth, is adopted by a six-year-old Hawaiian girl and hunted by its evil creator
The story is mostly the same, with evil Kweltikwan genius, Dr. Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis), in a great deal of trouble with the United Galactic Federation for his nasty experiments, including creating an indestructible agent of chaos, Experiment 626 (Chris Sanders). Though initially the Grand Councilwoman (Hannah Waddingham) imprisons Jumba and shuts down his lab, when 626 escapes to earth, he is sent to capture it.
Agent Wendell Pleakley (Billy Magnussen), who has done intensive study on earth fashions, (when we first see him, he has on a cowboy hat) is sent along to ensure Jumba does not harm humans. In Hawaii, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a six-year-old orphan with a singular imagination, and a propensity for trouble, is the cause of a great deal of worry for her sister, Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong).
Nani is Lilo's legal guardian and has given up a chance to study marine biology on a full scholarship to take care of her little sister. Her efforts might not be enough as the social worker, Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere), warns her. Mrs. Kekoa gives Nani a week to get everything in order, including cleaning the kitchen, stocking the refrigerator, and getting medical insurance to keep Lilo out of foster care.
Lilo wishes for a friend upon a falling star, which is actually 626's stolen police cruiser. She adopts 626 from the animal shelter where the naughty alien, who has assumed the shape of a dog, is kept after causing mayhem at a wedding. Lilo names 626, Stitch, and their mischief causes Nani to lose her job.
CIA agent, Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance) is also on the hunt for Stitch. Cobra Bubbles incidentally was the social worker in the original. Nani's friend, David (Kaipo Dudoit), is a surfer and his grandmother, Tūtū (Amy Hill), helps Nani care for Lilo.

The visuals are bright pops of colour, with the gloriously rendered CGI aliens seamlessly interacting with the humans. Stitch, with his grinning mouth and gleaming eyes, is a delight. The action is inventive and Kealoha making her acting debut as Lilo is cute beyond belief. Magnussen, as Pleakley, gets most of the funny lines.
Sanders, who conceptualised and voiced Stitch in the original, is on top of his game. It is nice to see Carrere, who was Nani's voice in the original. Lilo & Stitch is one of Disney's better live-action adaptations delivering a perfect mix of nostalgia and novelty.
Lilo & Stitch is currently running in theatres

Klay Thompson is obsessed with this new favorite dish by Megan Thee Stallion

Dallas Mavericks' Klay Thompson is relishing life off the court, influenced by his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion, evident in their shared social media moments. A recent video reveals Thompson's fondness for Megan's catfish and spaghetti dish, which he has discovered recently but will love for the rest of his life. Dallas Mavericks guard Klay Thompson is enjoying a new chapter of his life, mainly off the court. Social media is proof that he is largely influenced by his relationship with Megan Thee Stallion . This has nothing really to do with their specific basketball or music lives, but just in general humane activities. Their online presence shows them being together during gym workouts and fishing trips. However, a recent video shared by Stallion herself shows them having the best time together with their meal. Klay Thompson enjoys Catfish and Spaghetti Megan captioned, 'Out of everything I've cooked for him so far, he keeps asking for spaghetti and catfish 😂🍝,' while revealing a unique tradition. In the clip, Megan explained that Klay, who was unfamiliar with the combination of spaghetti and catfish, became hooked after she first prepared it for him. Since then his life has changed and his tastebuds crave his new found love her handmade dish. 'Ever since, he's asked for it, like, every week,' she said. Klay later savored the dish on camera and said, 'It's the best thing I've ever tasted, my favorite meal, catfish, spaghetti, and Hawaiian rolls. It's giving greatness… it was amazing.' Megan Thee Stallion's 2020 'shooting' incident has an update After a fight in 2020, Tory Lanez shot Megan Thee Stallion. As a result, Lanez was found guilty of charges such as assault with a firearm. He is presently incarcerated for ten years. Unexpectedly, Lanez submitted two petitions to contest his conviction and claim his innocence. Journalist Meghann Cuniff claims that one petition claimed that Kelsey Harris, Megan's ex-friend, was the shooter. The petition was backed up by a security guard who reportedly saw the event and verified that Lanez did not fire. In the 2020 case, Lanez's driver did not testify against him, according to the second petition. The California Court of Appeals, however, denied both appeals on August 12, 2025. Stallion hasn't said much about the situation publicly, but her legal team made it clear that Lanez was 'tried and convicted by a jury of his peers,' standing firm on the verdict. While Lanez is still serving his sentence, Megan's team is fully supportive of the judicial decision, emphasizing how fair the trial process was. Weapons dominates box office but theaters gearing up for slow months. Here's why

Zack Cregger's Weapons has become one of the year's breakout hits. Despite business declining by 43 per cent domestically and 33 per cent internationally, the film starring Julia Garner and Josh Brolin has raked in $148.8 million globally. This is yet another win for Warner Bros, which paid $38 million for rights to the project, according to The Hollywood Reporter. However, the weeks ahead look lighter with no major releases coming up. Theater chains in the US, too, are betting on smaller, riskier releases and hoping audiences keep showing up. Weapons shines at the box office.(X/@newlinecinema) The hit films no one saw coming The 2025 Box Office has been full of surprises. Few expected DC's Superman to outpace Marvel's Fantastic Four: First Steps or for Jurassic World Rebirth to eclipse them both with an $828 million haul. Original horror titles like Ryan Coogler's Sinners and Weapons proved that audiences are still willing to gamble on bold new ideas. Alamo Drafthouse's chief revenue officer, Mike Sherrill, told Variety that the success of the films shows that people will show up when they are given 'something fresh and exciting'. Also read: Weapons ending explained: What happened to the kids who vanished in Josh Brolin's film? The bleak weeks ahead The Variety report added that despite the momentum, the upcoming calendar looks barren. August will be closing with Ethan Coen's Honey Don't! and Darren Aronofsky's Caught Stealing, and the satire The Rose starring Benedict Cumberbatch and Olivia Colman. However, none are expected to generate blockbuster numbers. The first week of September will likely see a spark from the fifth instalment of the supernatural franchise The Conjuring: Last Rites and the filmed version of Broadway's Hamilton. According to Movie Insider, nine new titles will be debuting later in the month, which include: Lionsgate's The Long Walk, Sony's Demon Slayer: Infinity Castle, and Paul Thomas Anderson's costly epic One Battle After Another, starring Leonardo DiCaprio. Chris Randleman, chief revenue officer at Flix Brewhouse, told Variety that none of the September releases look like they will make it big, but the volume will counteract it. A glimpse of hope in October and beyond The industry's next major bet is Disney's Tron: Ares, which is set to release on October 10. However, the real uptick in business is expected in late October and November when the following titles arrive: Mortal Kombat II, Predator: Badlands, Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Wicked: For Good, and Disney's Zootopia 2. Texas Capital Securities analyst Eric Wold told Variety that theaters will be able to endure the lull since they have recovered enough financially after the pandemic to sustain through a short-term slowdown. FAQs Q1: Why is the fall box office expected to be weak? The release calendar has fewer big-budget films, with most major titles delayed until October and November. Q2: Which films could help sustain theaters before October? The Conjuring: Last Rites, Hamilton, and smaller titles like Honey Don't! and The Roses may provide moderate boosts. Q3: What are the big upcoming blockbusters? Disney's Tron: Ares, Mortal Kombat II, Predator: Badlands, Now You See Me: Now You Don't, Wicked: For Good, and Zootopia 2. Q4: How are theaters adapting to slow months? Chains like AMC and Alamo are using discounts, premium screenings, and special events to attract audiences.
