‘Lilo & Stitch' movie review: A rumbustious, out-of-this-world adventure

The Hindu23-05-2025

Chris Sanders' and Dean DeBlois' Lilo & Stitch (2002) telling the story of a wildly destructive blue alien who lands in Hawaii to discover the meaning of family was hailed for its charm and humour, and Disney's live action reboot retains the wit and warmth of the original.
Lilo & Stitch (English)
Director: Dean Fleischer Camp
Starring: Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, Zach Galifianakis, Maia Kealoha
Run time: 108 minutes
Storyline: A destructive alien lands on earth, is adopted by a six-year-old Hawaiian girl and hunted by its evil creator
The story is mostly the same, with evil Kweltikwan genius, Dr. Jumba Jookiba (Zach Galifianakis), in a great deal of trouble with the United Galactic Federation for his nasty experiments, including creating an indestructible agent of chaos, Experiment 626 (Chris Sanders). Though initially the Grand Councilwoman (Hannah Waddingham) imprisons Jumba and shuts down his lab, when 626 escapes to earth, he is sent to capture it.
Agent Wendell Pleakley (Billy Magnussen), who has done intensive study on earth fashions, (when we first see him, he has on a cowboy hat) is sent along to ensure Jumba does not harm humans. In Hawaii, Lilo (Maia Kealoha), a six-year-old orphan with a singular imagination, and a propensity for trouble, is the cause of a great deal of worry for her sister, Nani (Sydney Elizebeth Agudong).
Nani is Lilo's legal guardian and has given up a chance to study marine biology on a full scholarship to take care of her little sister. Her efforts might not be enough as the social worker, Mrs. Kekoa (Tia Carrere), warns her. Mrs. Kekoa gives Nani a week to get everything in order, including cleaning the kitchen, stocking the refrigerator, and getting medical insurance to keep Lilo out of foster care.
Lilo wishes for a friend upon a falling star, which is actually 626's stolen police cruiser. She adopts 626 from the animal shelter where the naughty alien, who has assumed the shape of a dog, is kept after causing mayhem at a wedding. Lilo names 626, Stitch, and their mischief causes Nani to lose her job.
CIA agent, Cobra Bubbles (Courtney B. Vance) is also on the hunt for Stitch. Cobra Bubbles incidentally was the social worker in the original. Nani's friend, David (Kaipo Dudoit), is a surfer and his grandmother, Tūtū (Amy Hill), helps Nani care for Lilo.

The visuals are bright pops of colour, with the gloriously rendered CGI aliens seamlessly interacting with the humans. Stitch, with his grinning mouth and gleaming eyes, is a delight. The action is inventive and Kealoha making her acting debut as Lilo is cute beyond belief. Magnussen, as Pleakley, gets most of the funny lines.
Sanders, who conceptualised and voiced Stitch in the original, is on top of his game. It is nice to see Carrere, who was Nani's voice in the original. Lilo & Stitch is one of Disney's better live-action adaptations delivering a perfect mix of nostalgia and novelty.
Lilo & Stitch is currently running in theatres

Chennai Book Park sees a steady stream of crowd on Day 1

Status: cleared Chennai: Those entering the Central Metro station now have one-stop access to books from prominent publishers, spanning from Higginbothams to Katha, at the Chennai Book Park, opened by Chief Minister M K Stalin on Tuesday. An initiative of the School Education Department to kindle a reading habit among the public, the book park saw a steady stream of visitors on the first day. Nestled between a pharmacy and an eatery, en route to the ticket counter, one would rarely miss the park. Decked up with flowers and carpets, over 4,300 titles from over 13 publishers were on display. Among these, 84 titles were released on Tuesday. Most of the stalls belonged to the Tamil Nadu Text Book and Educational Services Corporation (TNTESC), which manages the functioning of the park. Nakkheeran, Shanti, and Coral were among the prominent publishers who set up stalls. Schoolbooks, guides, and books for competitive exams, mostly Tamil, were available. The cost of books ranged from ₹50 to ₹3,500. The CMRL is yet to fix signage for the park at entries and exits. TNTESC superintendent G Balaji said the park will be open from 9 am to 9 pm. "The schedule on weekend timings will be finalised in a couple of days. At least three staff, including security personnel, will man the premises," he said. Chezhian Kumarasamy, Executive Director of an advertising firm, said it was good to see people at a book park in a digital age where mobile phones call the shots. "I wish more such parks would be opened in places such as airports and MRTS stations," he said. Some, like law student L Lakshmi, who walked in thinking there would be a lot of autobiographies and non-fiction Tamil books, said she was surprised to find English books on self-help. Publication managers, however, aren't too optimistic about sales. "I don't know how many people will walk in. They are in a hurry to board trains," said Sivakumar, manager of one of the publications. By 8:50 pm, the facility registered a sale of about ₹35,000. The stalls have tied up with the TNTESC on a revenue-sharing model, said Katha Books CEO Ravin Carr. "Between 25% and 40% of the sale cost (depending on the size of the stalls) will be shared with the govt," he said. At the event, the Chief Minister also inaugurated 110 library buildings built across all districts at a cost of ₹29.80 crore and 70 special libraries at bus stands, hospitals, and district collectorates. Miley Cyrus Says ‘Dancing in Little Clothes' Impacted Romance With Liam Hemsworth: ‘No One Wanted to Date Me'

Miley Cyrus is looking back at her time as a 21-year-old when she began 'acting out' and losing everything good that was going on in her life. While not mentioning anyone's name, the singer shared how her engagement fell through because she was 'sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only,' hinting at the alleged reason behind her 2013 breakup with Liam Hemsworth. In a podcast called Reclaiming with Monica Lewinsky, the 32-year-old went on to share how the troublesome times in 2013, including her leaving Disney and going n*de, massively affected her relationships. "If I kept dressing or acting a certain way, my relationships fell apart. No one wanted to date me,' she shared, hinting at a dry dating spell. How Miley Cyrus' Relationship With Liam Hemsworth Went Astray The singer and the actor began dating in 2009 after starring together in The Last Song. Their tumultuous relationship turned into an engagement in 2012, which was soon called off the following year. The breakup came with a bold moment for her music as one of her most controversial releases, her fourth studio album Bangerz, saw the light of day. Recalling those days, the Hannah Montana star said, "When I was dating, or I was engaged at the time, but that didn't work out because I was sharing a part of myself that men wanted to be saved for them only, and the fact that I would pose n*de or dance in very little clothes or show my body, was making them feel that I was taking something away that was meant to be for them." The Wrecking Ball star added how she had 'really hard times dating.' Miley Cyrus and Liam Hemsworth reunited in 2017, got engaged in October 2016 and married in December 2018. Their relationship came to a close in January 2020 with a finalized divorce.
