KOTA SAMARAHAN (June 9): Some RM107 million has been allocated to Sarawak under the Program Perumahan Rakyat Sejahtera (PPRS) for the construction and repair of homes for poor households, said Datuk Rubiah Wang.
The Deputy Rural and Regional Development Minister said this reflects the federal government's ongoing commitment to improving rural living conditions and addressing poverty, particularly among the hardcore poor.
She added the PPRS, previously known as the Housing Assistance Programme, is being implemented nationwide including Sarawak.
'This year, we began rolling out the PPRS to replace the previous PBR scheme. Many applications have been approved and are currently in the construction phase throughout the state.
'All that depends on the funding allocated for the year too,' the Kota Samarahan MO told reporters after officiating the handover of sacrificial meat for Kampung Asajaya Ulu and Kampung Asajaya Laut, here yesterday.
She explained that applications are evaluated based on strict eligibility and prioritisation criteria to ensure only the most deserving households benefit from the programme.
Rubiah also said that approvals are not given all at once but based on priority, which is determined by the relevant district offices, after which the officers verify and endorse the list of recipients to ensure only those truly in need are given assistance.
'In Asajaya alone, 14 homes have been approved for full reconstruction this year, while several more will undergo repair works in phases. These approvals were made through coordination with the local district office and area assemblyman.
'The assemblyman usually refers applicants to the district office for vetting and investigation before any final approval is granted,' she said.
Earlier, Rubiah took part in the Aidiladha 'ibadah korban' (sacrificial rites) programme at Masjid Darul Salihin in Kampung Tanjung Parang.
The distribution of sacrificial meat was coordinated by the village security and development committee, ensuring it reached eligible recipients especially the needy.
'These programmes not only uphold our religious obligations but also provide a meaningful platform to strengthen the bond between leaders and the community,' she said. allocation hardcore poor People's Prosperity Housing Programme Rubiah Wang

Entrepreneurs Renting MARA Premises Recorded RM2.2 Bln Sales Last Year

KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 18 (Bernama) -- Entrepreneurs renting business premises under Majlis Amanah Rakyat (MARA) recorded total sales of RM2.2 billion last year, said Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang. She said that for this year, as of June, the accumulated sales value for 6,557 business lots nationwide stood at RM1.01 billion, an increase of 5.6 per cent over the same period last year. 'In addition, a total of 14,943 job opportunities have been created through businesses operating in MARA premises nationwide,' she said during the question-and-answer session in the Dewan Rakyat today. She was responding to a supplementary question from Datuk Mohd Isam Mohd Isa (BN-Tampin) on the contribution of MARA arcades towards the local economy and the creation of job opportunities and income for Bumiputera entrepreneurs up to June 2025. Elaborating further, Rubiah said that MARA arcades continue to receive good response from small entrepreneurs, but the limited number of business spaces remains the main challenge, in addition to most MARA arcades built in the 1970s and 1980s requiring infrastructure and facility upgrades. Therefore, she said that under the 13th Malaysia Plan (13MP), the ministry through MARA has applied for an allocation of RM50 million to upgrade MARA arcades, bazaars and business premises to be more suitable, attractive and comfortable for entrepreneurs and visitors. Answering a supplementary question from Bakri Jamaluddin (PN-Tangga Batu) regarding the rental of MARA premises to other government agencies, Rubiah said MARA is currently reviewing its business lot allocation policy, including proposals to limit the maximum number of lots per tenant and to reassess the allocation of business spaces used by government agencies. She said this step is to ensure that opportunities for Bumiputera entrepreneurs are not affected and remain MARA's priority in local economic development. Rubiah added that MARA's policy stipulates that the provision of business premises is for Bumiputera entrepreneur development, but rental to capable companies and government agencies is not against the rules as long as it complies with existing guidelines and does not affect the participation of small entrepreneurs.

Ahmad Zahid: Smallholders continue to receive monsoon season assistance this year

KUALA LUMPUR: The government will continue providing the Monsoon Season Assistance (BMT) this year as an ongoing effort to assist smallholders affected by the unpredictable weather, said Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi. He said RM264.91 million has been allocated for the initiative, which is expected to benefit more than 330,000 recipients nationwide, including those under the Federal Land Development Authority (Felda) and the Sabah Rubber Industry Authority (LIGS). "This assistance aligns with the Madani Government's commitment to safeguarding the welfare of rural communities. BMT is not just a one-off financial assistance, but a lifeline and a source of livelihood when the rainy season threatens harvest and income. "This is the true face of the Madani Government that cares for smallholders who are the pulse of the country's industry," he said when speaking at the Rubber Industry Smallholders Development Authority (Risda) People's Tuition Programme: Excellent Student Appreciation Ceremony here today. Also present were Deputy Minister of Rural and Regional Development Datuk Rubiah Wang, Mara chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki and Risda chairman Manndzri Nasib. Ahmad Zahid, who is also the Minister of Rural and Regional Development, said that the volatility of commodity prices and yearly weather uncertainties continue to exert financial pressure on smallholders, affecting both their yields and incomes. Therefore, he said, initiatives such as BMT are an important form of intervention in rural development policy, which not only functions as economic support but also as recognition of the hard work of smallholders. — BERNAMA

PAPAR: More than 1,000 residents in Mukim Kaiduan are now benefitting from 16 completed development projects under the Kampung Angkat Madani (KAM) programme this year. The Federal initiative, introduced last year, aims to close the development gap between rural and urban communities by funding vital infrastructure and facilities. Under the programme, each ministry adopts one rural village annually, with RM107 million allocated to implement KAM projects in 43 selected locations nationwide. Papar MP Datuk Armizan Mohd Ali, who is also Domestic Trade and Cost of Living Minister, said RM2.5 million was spent on projects in Mukim Kaiduan through close collaboration between his ministry, the Sabah State Development Office, and the District Office. The projects include new bridges, road upgrades, improved places of worship and community spaces, and solar-powered streetlights across Kampung Kaiduan, Kampung Bisuang, and Kampung Bolotikon. * Follow us on our official WhatsApp channel and Telegram for breaking news alerts and key updates! * Do you have access to the Daily Express e-paper and online exclusive news?
