Cops, netas, housewives: This Instagram blackmailer spared none
Rajkot: Such was his notoriety for falsely accusing police and govt officials through Instagram posts and blackmailing them for money, that even ordinary people began paying them to defame those they held personal grudges against. However, the two-year run of history-sheeter Yogendra alias Bakro Solanki (35) ended with the Surendranagar police nabbing him and his seven gang members on Thursday. Five others of the 14-member gang were also detained. Solanki, a native of Surendranagar, extorted money both from the source for uploading the videos and from the targets for taking them down. He targeted policemen, govt employees, and politicians across Gujarat by posting their defamatory videos, mostly accusing them of corruption. According to the police, Solanki shifted base from Surendranagar to Kolkata two years ago. Initially, he started making videos of bootleggers and took money from them to delete the Instagram posts detailing their illegal activities. As he started pocketing money, he expanded his list of victims to law enforcers and sex workers too, using the same modus operandi. Solanki did not stop here. He went on to slander housewives too after the women's acquaintances contacted him to vilify them. Police found at least 200 videos on his cellphone. Investigation revealed that every video got 50,000-80,000 views on Instagram. "If somebody held a grudge with a neighbour, they would pay Solanki, and he would make slanderous videos targeting them. After uploading the video, he also took money from his victim to delete it," said a police officer. B H Singarakhiya, police inspector of the Special Operations Group (SOG) in Surendranagar, said, "Our records show there are more than 100 victims of his extortion racket. Solanki has offences registered against him in other police stations of Gujarat too." Jugal Purohit, deputy superintendent of police, Surendranagar, added, "We found that some of his victims were women working as home guards and those from reputed families. We are scrutinising the videos to find out more victims." Along with Solanki, police arrested Bhavan Bavaliya (32), Gopal Makwana (36), Sanjay Gariya (45), Suresh Sindhav (29), Akilkhan Pathan (33), Aslam Katiya (33), and Rakesh Prajapati (40). The gang members arrested were mainly those who provided information about the targets and allowed their bank accounts for depositing the extorted money.
