Police complaint lodged against Majithia, says minister Ravjot

Time of India18-06-2025
Jalandhar: Punjab local bodies minister Ravjot Singh announced on Wednesday that a formal police complaint has been lodged against senior
Shiromani Akali Dal
(SAD) leader
Bikram Singh Majithia
for posting his "edited" personal photographs on social media accounts seeking to "scandalise and defame him".
Calling Majithia "an irrelevant leader from an irrelevant party raising an irrelevant issue," the minister, addressing a press conference, sought to give the issue a casteist angle, saying that Majithia was targeting Scheduled Caste (SC) leaders of the AAP. He mentioned minister Lal Chand Kataruchak and former minister Balkar Singh, whose "sleazy videos" were earlier released by Majithia. All three hail from the SC community.
He claimed that Majithia had a history of oppressing SCs and Dalits during his tenure in power, while the AAP govt was a supporter of the two communities.
He said that Majithia circulated these photographs when AAP was set to win the Ludhiana West byelection.
"The photograph shared on social media is a disgraceful and unethical attempt to mislead the public and defame me. This woman is someone's daughter, mother, or sister.

This act is not just an attack on me but an insult to all women. Such tactics reflect the low level of politics practised by such leaders," said Ravjot, flanked by AAP state general secretary Deepak Bali and local AAP leader Tarandeep Sunny.
He said that the photographs in question were eight to 10 years old and feature his ex-wife. He reiterated claims that the pictures were "edited". He said that releasing such photographs amounted to insulting women and his former wife was suffering ignominy without any fault of hers.
He said he was leaving the matter in the court of God and the people.
Wrong to bring casteism angle: Channi
Jalandhar MP and former Punjab chief minister Charanjit Singh Channi has sought to debunk attempts by local bodies minister Ravjot Singh and AAP to introduce a caste angle into the recent controversy surrounding alleged "sleazy photographs". In a statement posted on his X handle, Channi said, "One after the other obscene videos of
Aam Aadmi Party
ministers coming out are a grave disrespect to women.
It is wrong to link this issue with casteism in any way. It would be better if the entire AAP party apologises and resigns."
'Pics morphed': Another minister slams Majithia
Punjab Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) chief and minister for minister for good governance and information technology Aman Arora on Wednesday slammed Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader Bikram Singh Majithia for putting out "private" and "morphed" pictures of his cabinet colleague Ravjot Singh in the public domain.
"I never anticipated that someone could take politics to such a low level. This is not right," Arora said while responding to a question on the issue during a press conference here.
When asked if the row had dented the party's image, Arora said: "Dr Ravjot Singh has already clarified that these were his private photos with his ex-wife, which were being posted on social media after AI morphing. How will this dent the party's image?"
Rather, Arora added: "This raises a question mark on the character of the person who is posting these photos. Will they resort to such a low level of politics?"
"Why does Majithia get such photos or news just two days ahead of the elections," he asked. "I mean, it is a very sorry state of affairs. Only a handful, two or four leaders of Punjab, one can count on fingers, resort to such a low level of politics."
Arora further asked: "Will they even enter the bedrooms of people? It is ridiculous. What these people are doing is total nonsense."

Govt. distributed substandard flags: AAP, BJP hits back

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) on Tuesday alleged that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has 'looted' crores of rupees under a 'Tiranga scam' in Delhi, claiming that the government-selected company supplied 'substandard flags' for the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. The BJP hit back by terming the claims 'false'. Senior AAP leader and MP Sanjay Singh alleged that the Delhi government allocated ₹4 crore to distribute seven lakh national flags under the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, but instead of the tender-mandated size, more miniature flags were supplied. He also alleged that the cost of each flag was fixed at ₹60, but a company selected by the government delivered substandard flags worth ₹15. Addressing a press conference, Mr. Singh alleged that each flag was to be 900 mm x 1,350 mm in size, supported with a 6-foot pole. 'But the self-styled nationalists of the BJP even committed fraud in the flag and the pole. The flags supplied were reduced to 711 mm in length and 508 mm in width, while the pole was cut down from 6 feet to 4 feet. The BJP government committed a scam in the name of the flag,' he said. 'How can any party, in the purchase of the Tiranga – the pride and honour of India – commit a scam? But this is what the BJP has done. The Delhi BJP government under CM Rekha Gupta has committed corruption in buying the Tiranga,' he added. Taking to X, senior AAP leader Manish Sisodia said, 'Politics on the Tiranga, business on the Tiranga, and now a scam on the Tiranga. Such scamsters deserve to face sedition charges.' Responding to allegations, Delhi BJP spokesperson Praveen Shankar Kapoor claimed that for the 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign, the Delhi government procured flags through a complete tender process, strictly following rules, and the purchase was done via a government portal. The GAD (General Administration Department) finalised the procurement contract on August 8, and all purchases were made as per regulations, he added. '[AAP leader] Sanjay Singh is a merchant of lies. The AAP party, which never celebrated the Tricolour Festival, is now raising false questions about the Delhi government's transparent 'Har Ghar Tiranga' campaign. The people of Delhi have not forgotten the propaganda scam under the name of the Tiranga campaign by the [Arvind] Kejriwal government in 2022,' he said.

AAP Backs Ex-Supreme Court Judge Sudershan Reddy for Vice President's Post

New Delhi: Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) Rajya Sabha MP Sanjay Singh on Tuesday said that retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy is the joint candidate of opposition parties for the upcoming Vice Presidential elections and confirmed AAP's support for his candidature. "Understand this first that he is the candidate of the opposition parties. AAP national convener Arvind Kejriwal and the party have decided that we will support former Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy," Singh told ANI. His statement came in response to questions over Reddy's nomination as the INDIA bloc's Vice Presidential candidate. Reddy, earlier in the day, expressed his gratitude to the INDIA bloc for nominating him and appealed to all Members of Parliament to support his candidature. "Thank you for projecting me as a candidate on behalf of the INDIA Alliance. But for (sic) you, it would not have been a candidate, I would humbly request and appeal to all the Parliamentarians to support my candidature," Reddy told reporters here. "I am very, very happy. Thank you," he added. When asked about him and his competition being from southern India, Reddy said that "south, north, east, west" doesn't matter since both - him and Maharashtra Governor CP Radhakrishnan - were Indian nationals. "It is the Parliamentarians who elect the Vice President. Political parties may sponsor the candidates. There is only one citizenship in this country. CP Radhakrishnan and I are Indian nationals. Whether it is South, North, East, or West, nothing matters," Reddy said. The retired Supreme Court judge, who has been nominated as the joint opposition candidate for the Vice President post, was welcomed by the INDIA bloc MPs after arriving in Delhi today. The INDIA bloc announced retired Supreme Court judge B Sudershan Reddy as its Vice Presidential candidate earlier in the day, terming the election an "ideological fight" against the ruling National Democratic Alliance (NDA). The opposition leaders said their choice of candidate is meant to defend constitutional values. Earlier in the day, Kharge said Reddy would file his nomination on August 21. Reddy, who served as Chief Justice of the Guwahati High Court before being elevated to the Supreme Court in 2007, retired in July 2011. He will contest against the NDA nominee CP Radhakrishnan. The Vice-Presidential election is scheduled for September 9, with counting on the same day.
