India's fifth-gen fighter AMCA hits new milestone as Rajnath approves its programme execution model
This is a deviation from the past when such projects would be handed over directly to HAL for manufacturing, without it having to compete with others to bag the project.
The Aeronautical Development Agency (ADA) under the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO)—the agency that will design the aircraft—is set to execute the programme through industry partnership. It will shortly issue an expression of interest for the AMCA development phase, a statement from the defence ministry said.

As per the ministry, the execution model approach provides equal opportunities to both private and public sectors on a competitive basis. It said they can bid either independently or as a joint venture or as consortia and the entity/bidder should be an Indian company compliant with the laws and regulations of the country.
The ministry said this was an important step towards harnessing the indigenous expertise, capability and capacity to develop the AMCA prototype, which will be a major milestone towards Atmanirbharta (self-reliance) in the aerospace sector.
The development comes amid tensions with Pakistan and in the immediate aftermath of Operation Sindoor, which has seen significant participation of a range of fighter jets and air-launched weapons of the Indian Air Force, including the modern Rafale jets.
While Pakistan is acquiring Chinese fifth-generation fighter jet J-35 A, China has conducted test flights of sixth-generation fighter prototypes—the J-36 and J-50—being developed by the Chinese Chengdu Aircraft Corporation and Shenyang Aircraft Corporation, respectively.
The new milestone comes a year after the Cabinet Committee on Security cleared the project to design and develop AMCA.
AMCA will be a 25-tonne twin-engine aircraft with advanced stealth features—which means it can avoid getting detected by enemy radars. This means the aircraft would emit a low electromagnetic signature that enemy radars would not be able to detect, but at the same time have advanced sensors and weapons to detect and take down enemy aircraft.
The aircraft will have a bigger internal fuel tank—which can carry 6.5 tonnes of fuel but will remain concealed. It will also have an internal weapons bay for a range of weapons—including indigenous ones—to be buried in its belly.
As of now, the cost of the project is estimated to be around Rs 15,000 crore.
AMCA Mk1 will fly on the existing 90kN class engine (GE 414 engines from the US) and AMCA Mk2 will be powered by a stronger engine of 110kN to be developed indigenously by the DRDO's Gas Turbine Research Establishment in collaboration with a foreign defence major.
Officials had earlier told The Indian Express that the ADA expected to have the first flight of the aircraft within five years after the cabinet approval.
The total duration of development of the aircraft is expected to be around 10 years from now. The plans were to manufacture five prototypes of the aircraft first before manufacturing of the jet began.
The manufacturing of the aircraft will bring India into a select league of nations that possess its fifth-generation fighter aircraft—the US (F-22 Raptor and F-35A Lightning II), China (J-20 Mighty Dragon), and Russia (Sukhoi Su-57).

The Centre is set to unveil an artificial intelligence (AI)-powered tool to automatically generate minutes of meetings of gram sabhas, the primary body of the Panchayati Raj system, consisting of all registered voters of a gram panchayat. Named 'SabhaSaar', it will be rolled out in Tripura on Independence Day, August 15, and thereafter made available to other states, said a government official. Union Minister of Panchayati Raj Rajiv Ranjan Singh Lalan and his deputy Prof SP Singh Baghel will unveil 'SabhaSaar' in New Delhi Thursday, on the eve of Independence Day. A source said 'SabhaSaar' is built on Bhashini, an AI-powered language translation platform launched by the government to bridge literacy, language, and digital divides. The tool generates transcription from a video or audio, translates it into a chosen output language and prepares a summary. It enables transcription in all major Indian languages like Hindi, Bengali, Tamil, Telugu, Marathi and Gujarati, in addition to English, the source said. 'SabhaSaar' is ideal for panchayats, administrative bodies, and rural development projects as it streamlines documentation and empowers stakeholders with instant access to meeting insights, as per sources. As per the Ministry of Panchayati Raj, there are 2,55,397 village panchayats, 6,742 intermediate panchayats, 665 district panchayats, and 16,189 traditional local bodies across the country. A gram sabha is supposed to meet at least four days (January 26, May 1, August 15, and October 2) in a year. To ensure that gram sabhas meet regularly and function transparently, the Panchayati Raj ministry has launched a Panchayat NIRNAY portal, a real-time monitoring system that deals with their meetings. It has provisions for scheduling, notifying citizens with the meeting agenda well in advance, enhancing public participation, recording and enabling panchayat decisions for ready reference, bringing about transparency and accountability of panchayat functionaries in panchayat decision making and its implementation. According to data available with the ministry, over 10,000 gram Sabha meetings were held through the Panchayat NIRNAY platform during the financial year 2024-25. Most of these meetings were held in Punjab, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana and Bihar.

BJP's counter to Rahul Gandhi's ‘Vote Chori' charge - ‘Sonia Gandhi was on electoral rolls before Indian citizenship'
The Bharatiya Janata Party launched a counterattack on the Congress party on Wednesday by claiming that the former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi had been illegally, though briefly, added to the voter list 45 years ago, before she was an Indian citizen. Former Union Minister Anurag Thakur claimed Gandhi—born Sonia Maino in Italy in 1946 — was added to the list from 1980 to 1982, a year before she became an Indian citizen, NDTV reported. The allegation comes amid 'vote chori' charges by Rahul Gandhi, accusing the Election Commission of India of colluding with the BJP Thakur's allegations were first shared by BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya, who had posted on X hours earlier. Sharing a 'photocopy of what appeared to be an extract from electoral rolls of 1980, indicating Sonia Gandhi was a voter when she did not yet acquire the citizenship of Bharat'. "If this isn't blatant electoral malpractice, what is?" Malviya claimed Gandhi, who married Rajiv Gandhi in 1968, had been added to the voter list while the Gandhi family lived at the official residence of then-Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. In response, Congress leader Tariq Anwar told NDTV that Sonia Gandhi had not asked for her name to be included in the voter roll. Anwar said that it was the poll body officials of the time who did so. "See... the Election Commission is responsible. Sonia Gandhi did not say 'my name should be included in the voter registration list'. In the end it was the Election Commission that included her...," he said. Anwar said, Gandhi never made a request to be added to the voter list. The BJP also alleged Congress defeated Bhimrao Ambedkar, regarded as the father of the Indian Constitution, in the 1952 general election through electoral fraud. If we start from 1952, Congress and CPI together defeated Dr. Bhimrao Ambedkar, a constitution maker and a saint-like leader, in the election. Congress laid the foundation of electoral corruption in the very first election of 1952," BJP MP Anurag Thakur said at a press conference held in the party's headquarters here. "Check the records: 74,333 votes were rejected, while Ambedkar ji lost by just 14,561 votes. Congress ensured that a constitution maker, a Dalit leader, was eliminated in the very first election. Imagine, the one who created the constitution was defeated by the Congress family through electoral fraud," he added. Sonia Gandhi did not say 'my name should be included in the voter registration list'. The BJP MP alleged that Rahul Gandhi and his family had a history of questioning the Election Commission when they lost elections. "This family and party have had a tradition from the beginning that if you lose an election, you raise questions about the Election Commission, the voters, or the functioning of the Election Commission. Indira Gandhi had said, Voters are a bunch of fools. When Rajiv Gandhi lost the election, he blamed the ballot paper. Rahul Gandhi's father used to say, conduct elections with voting machines, and Rahul Gandhi says, conduct elections with ballot papers," he said.
