Another BR Patil audio leak, this time targeting chief minister Siddaramaiah, embarrasses Karnataka Congress

Time of India01-07-2025
Mandya/Bengaluru: A leaked phone conversation featuring senior Congress MLA BR Patil, who is also deputy chairman of Karnataka State Policy and Planning Commission, has triggered fresh controversy in Karnataka Congress, with the legislator crediting himself for introducing chief minister Siddaramaiah to Sonia Gandhi, and suggesting the former's rise was thanks to "luck" and "planetary alignment".
The video conversation, allegedly recorded during Patil's recent visit to KR Pet in Mandya, captures his frank admissions and veiled frustrations. Patil, a four-time legislator and MLA for Aland, is heard saying: "Siddaramaiah won the lottery. I was the one who first introduced him to Sonia Gandhi, but his stars aligned and he became CM."
He repeats the statement later in the conversation, claiming Siddaramaiah's "fate was good, so he got the position, but I remained unlucky".

Using the Kannada term Grahachara (planetary alignment), Patil implies it was fate, not merit, that led to Siddaramaiah's elevation. "See, we don't have a godfather, in fact, there's neither 'god' nor 'father' for us," he adds, highlighting his sense of political marginalisation.
Patil was earlier appointed as political adviser to the CM in an apparent effort to pacify him after he was overlooked for a cabinet berth.
However, he resigned from that role citing some problems and was later made deputy chairman of the policy and planning commission.
This isn't the first time Patil has been embroiled in a controversy over leaked audio. He had previously acknowledged that his voice featured in another clip relating to irregularities in housing allotments.
The latest leak comes amid growing dissent in state Congress. All India Congress Committee general secretary Randeep Singh Surjewala is currently in Bengaluru to oversee damage control by meeting party MLAs.
Patil met Surjewala on Monday, but the timing of his comments has kicked off another round of speculation.
During the call, Patil also confirms having met Surjewala: "I met Surjewala and he listened to me seriously. Let us see what happens. He looked into everything and even said he was grateful to me. He mentioned he wasn't aware of these issues earlier. Now, I've left it to the high command and the chief minister. The high command will take the final decision."
Later on Tuesday, Siddaramaiah said he was indeed lucky and hence holds the CM's post. "Yes, I'm lucky. That's why I became chief minister," he told reporters when asked about Patil's comments. Siddaramaiah was among the eight MLAs, including Patil, who quit the JD(S) and joined Congress back in 2006.

Today in Politics: Rahul Gandhi's begins Yatra in Bihar; EC to hold press conference

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi is set to kick off his 16-day 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' (Voter Rights March) from Sasaram in Bihar Sunday. Rahul's march comes amidst strident protests being held by the Opposition parties within Parliament and outside over the Election Commission (EC)'s Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in Bihar. Hearing a clutch of petitions challenging the Bihar SIR, the Supreme Court, in its interim order Thursday, directed the EC to make available online a searchable list of about 65 lakh voter names omitted from the draft electoral rolls with reasons for their deletion. The march, which is being modelled on Rahul's Bharat Jodo Yatra and Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra, will pass through 23 districts, covering 50 Assembly segments in 29 Lok Sabha constituencies across several regions of Bihar. Rahul would traverse a distance of over 1,300 kms during his Yatra, which would be undertaken both on foot and by vehicles. Key faces of the Congress's Mahagathbandhan allies, such as RJD leader Tejashwi Prasad Yadav, would periodically join Rahul in the course of his march. The Yatra's starting point Sasaram is crucial for the Opposition alliance as it falls in its bastion of Shahabad. It would cross through the Mahagathbandhan's strongholds in the Magadh, Ang, Seemanchal, Mithila, Tirhut and Saran regions, culminating in a rally at Gandhi Maidan in Patna on September 1. The Assembly segments on the Yatra route are a mix of strongholds and swing seats for the Opposition alliance. In the keenly-fought 2020 Bihar Assembly polls, the incumbent Nitish Kumar-led NDA won the polls by winning 125 seats of the state's 243 as against the Mahagathbandhan's 110 seats. Of the 50 Assembly seats along the Yatra route, the Opposition alliance currently has 21 seats. In 2020, the RJD had contested 23 of these 50 seats and won 12. The Congress had then contested 22 of them, but managed to win only seven. The Left parties together had contested five seats, winning two. Election Commission press conference The Election Commission (EC) will hold a press conference on Sunday amid allegations of 'vote theft' by the Opposition on the intensive electoral roll revision in Bihar. It is unusual for the poll authority to convene a formal press conference on issues other than announcing election schedules. The subject of the press conference has not been specified, but officials said it is related to allegations levelled against the EC. Rahul has repeatedly accused the poll panel of fudging voter data and alleged that there was 'vote theft' in Maharashtra, Karnataka and Haryana. The commission has asked the Congress leader to submit the names of those he claims have been wrongfully added or removed from the voters' list, along with a signed declaration. The poll authority has even said that it would seek an apology from Rahul, who is the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, if he fails to give an undertaking to back his allegations. The EC's move to conduct the SIR exercise is facing questions from opposition parties who claim that the move will disenfranchise crores of eligible citizens due to want of papers. — With PTI inputs

Voter Adhikar Yatra Live Updates: Rahul Gandhi to embark on his Yatra from Bihar's Sasaram, to cover over 20 districts, 1300 kilometers

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi will embark on a 'Voter Adhikar Yatra' across Bihar from Sasaram on Sunday. His party has asserted that it will fight for the 'one person, one vote' principle and not accept the Election Commission becoming a 'compartment' of the BJP's 'so-called double engine'. Rahul Gandhi, along with RJD's Tejashwi Yadav and other Mahagathbandhan leaders, will undertake the 16-day and 1,300 km-long yatra from Sasaram. The Yatra will conclude with a rally in Patna on September 1. In a post in Hindi on X, Gandhi said, '16 days, 20+ districts, 1,300+ km. We are coming among the people with the Voter Adhikar Yatra. This is a fight to protect the most basic democratic right – 'one person, one vote'.' 'Join us in Bihar to save the Constitution,' he added. It is important to note that the 'yatra' will be in a hybrid mode, on foot and by vehicle, as was Gandhi's Manipur to Mumbai Bharat Jodo Nyay Yatra ahead of the Lok Sabha polls, party leaders said. Special NCERT module on Partition gets Congress' goat

NEW DELHI: A political row broke out on Saturday over a new special module by the National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT), which holds the Congress leadership, Muhammad Ali Jinnah, and Viceroy Lord Mountbatten responsible for Partition of India. The module, released by NCERT to mark 'Partition Horrors Remembrance Day', drew the ire of the Congress, which demanded that the module be set on fire as it presents a distorted history. Speaking to reporters on Saturday, Congress leader Pawan Khera said, 'Is 1938 mentioned or not in the NCERT module? In 1938, the Hindu Mahasabha's national conference in Gujarat announced that Hindus and Muslims could not live in one country. Is 1940 mentioned in the module?' he asked. In 1940, Jinnah adopted the Hindu Mahasabha's idea at the Muslim League's Lahore session. 'It was mooted in 1938 by the Hindu Mahasabha, and Jinnah repeated it in 1940,' he said. 'Burn the document if all this is not mentioned in it. Partition happened due to the nexus between Hindu Mahasabha and Muslim League. Generations will not forgive them,' he said, adding that Mahasabha-Muslim League coalition governments in Bengal, Sindh and North West Frontier Province (NWFP) after 1942, led to Partition. Responding to the Congress' allegations, BJP spokesperson Gaurav Bhatia said Rahul Gandhi's 'appeasement politics' mirrors Jinnah's divisive ideology. 'NCERT has brought the truth of Partition to textbooks. The Rahul-Jinnah party is rattled because their role is exposed,' Bhatia said. NCERT published two separate modules — one for Classes 6 to 8 and another for Classes 9 to 12. These are supplementary resources in English and Hindi, not part of regular textbooks, and are meant to be used through projects, posters, discussions and debates. The module quotes Jinnah as saying he never thought Partition would happen. 'Later, even Jinnah admitted that he had not expected Partition to happen. He told his aide, 'I never thought it would happen. I never expected to see Pakistan in my lifetime',' it said.
