Alex Post: Aspiring, inspirational swimmer

Yahoo07-06-2025
BROOKINGS, SD (KELO) — There are no lazy summer afternoons lounging by the pool for a Brookings man.
Instead, Alex Post is jumping into the water as part of his training to become a world-class swimmer.
Oldham-Ramona-Rutland School Board facing a lawsuit
His rigorous workouts are an inspiration to others who may be facing challenges of their own.
Post swims dozens of laps in the pool at the Miller Wellness Center at SDSU.
'Very exhausting. Especially if I do about half of them are backstrokes, the rest is more of the butterflies and that's a lot harder for me,' Post said.
Post is constantly trying to improve his time.
'I could swim in a 25-meter, I think my best time is 45-seconds, which is really good for a guy like me,' Post said.
Post, 24, has been swimming for much of his life. But just a couple months ago, he discovered he could swim without a life jacket. And that would plunge him into uncharted waters.
'At first, I was afraid to swim. I thought I was going to drown. And so, I finally had to get past that fear and just do it,' Post said.
You see, he swims without any legs.
'I was born with the rare genetic disease called arthrogryposis which affects muscle and bone,' Post said.
A dozen years ago, Post decided to have his legs surgically removed.
'A lot of my joints are frozen into place. They can't move and so I knew I was never going to be able to walk with my legs so I told my parents I wanted to remove my legs,' Post said.
Now he aspires to compete in the Paralympic Games in Los Angeles in 2028. But first, he'll have to compete in preliminary events at the regional and national level. Whenever Post is in the water, he's overflowing with confidence.
'He's driven, super-outgoing, confident and then the biggest thing is he's reliable. Every day he wants to get better,' Post's coach and caregiver Scott Ault said.
South Dakota's fall pheasant outlook is 'very positive'
'I push myself and it gets tough sometimes because the muscles hurt. Everything's going to hurt and I know that I'm going to get there,' Post said.
Post is staying in his lane in pursuing his paralympic dream. But he's looking beyond his own ambitions to bring hope to others.
'I'm not just trying to inspire people with disabilities. But people that think they're not good enough in life, that want to give up and I just want to show people there's no point in giving up, there's something that you can do,' Post said.
Leaving a legacy of determination and drive in his wake.
'One of the things my mother always said was: you shoot for the moon and if you don't get there, you'll still fall amongst the stars. And that's Alex in a nutshell,' Ault said.
Post is a client of Right at Home In-Home Care & Assistance. The Sioux Falls-based company is sponsoring his Paralympics quest.
He is looking for additional help. If you'd like to be a sponsor, we have a link to his Facebook page.

On Thursday, Aug. 14, the NBA unveiled this coming season's schedule and revealed the path Jordi Fernandez's club will take toward redemption following last year's rough 26-56 effort. To kick the regular season off at their home Barclays Center, returning stars Cam Thomas and Nic Claxton along with big-name free agent signees Michael Porter Jr. and Terance Mann will face Donovan Mitchell's Cleveland Cavaliers on Friday, Oct. 24. Advertisement Other notable Brooklyn-based matchups to keep an eye on after that include showdowns with their crosstown rival New York Knicks (Nov. 24 and March 20, 2026), Steph Curry's Golden State Warriors (Dec. 29), former Net Cam Johnson's Denver Nuggets (Jan. 4), LeBron and Luka's Los Angeles Lakers (Feb. 3) and Cooper Flagg's Dallas Mavericks (Feb. 24, which will also serve as a reunion for former Brooklyn guard Kyrie Irving). In addition to the new-look starting lineup, fans will likely want to keep an eye on the NBA record-tying five (!) first-round draft picks that General Manager Sean Marks made this past June. They are: No. 8 pick Egor Demin a flex guard/forward from BYU, averaged 11.3 PPG in Summer League Advertisement No. 19 pick Nolan Traoré a point guard from France, averaged 7.3 PPG No. 22 pick Drake Powell an athletic wing from North Carolina, he did not play in Summer League due to an injury No. 26 Ben Saraf a combo guard from Israel, averaged 7 PPG No. 27 Danny Wolf a forward/center from Yale, averaged 10 PPG Interestingly, the most promising players from this year's Summer League run were Drew Timme — who played a handful of games with the Nets to end 2024-25 — who averaged 25.3 PPG and former Laker Quincy Olivari who netted 16.7 in the brief Vegas summer season. Tyrese Samuel and Tyson Etienne also impressed. Also, of note, the team has a pair of preseason games against the Phoenix Suns at Macao, China's Venetian Arena on Oct. 10 and 12. Prior to that, they'll take on Israel's Hapoel Jerusalem at home on Saturday, Oct. 4. St. Louis CITY SC welcomes first-ever team pet with help from Purina

A Major League Soccer season can be long and grueling for players on and off the pitch. St. Louis CITY SC and Purina are collaborating to welcome the club's first-ever team pet to support its players, staff and fans. The trained and certified facility dog will help highlight the power of pets by providing wellbeing support for all clubs within the St. Louis CITY SC system, spreading joy and positivity with CITY SC players, staff, fans and supporters, and serving as a valued resource to help deliver positive impact to the entire community. 'Since announcing our partnership with CITY SC, we've envisioned a world where we work together to redefine the role of pets in sport. We've taken amazing strides toward our ambition to make CITY SC the most pet-friendly sports club in the world,' said Andrea Faccio, President and Chief Growth Officer at Purina. 'Assisting CITY to welcome a certified facility dog as a team pet will deliver something tangible and authentic to the soccer club, CITY fans and to our community. We're firm believers in the power of pets, and there may be no greater illustration of that positive impact than through a program like this.' The journey to select CITY's first team pet is chronicled in a short-form, four-part online documentary series 'TEAM PET.' The series is narrated by St. Louisan, former Major League Soccer MVP and U.S. Men's National Team player, and current MLS Season Pass Match and Studio Analyst Taylor Twellman, and goes behind the scenes to highlight the selfless work of trained puppy raisers and the role they play preparing each dog for a life of service. To facilitate dog training and certification, Purina enlisted CHAMP Assistance Dogs, a St. Louis-based nonprofit focused on leveraging the healing power of dogs to improve the lives of people in its community. Seven dogs were considered for the role of CITY SC's team pet, with professionals from CHAMP, and the pet experts at Purina, making the final determination on which is best suited for the unique role. Evaluation included overall temperament, assistance skills development and adaptability to loud, crowded environments like CITY SC matches. Each of the seven dogs are being certified as either a therapy, service or facility dog and will receive an important assignment to support those in need across the greater St. Louis region. Only one will be named CITY SC's official team pet. 'A lot of factors go into identifying the 'right' dog for a job like this – a combination of genetics, socialization and training – and it's important for us to put the CITY team pet in a position to be successful and enjoy this work,' said Dr. Annie Valuska, Pet Behavior Scientist at Purina. Certified facility dogs can help reduce stress and anxiety, decrease feelings of loneliness, isolation and depression, and even lower blood pressure. The team pet will support coaches, players and staff across CITY SC, as well as become part of matchday traditions at Energizer Park, join the players in day-to-day activities from training to recovery, spread joy to the front office staff and sporting department, and represent a positive beacon for fans. The team pet will also devote significant time to positively impacting the St. Louis region through the club's community outreach events; engaging with supporters and fans during matches and events at Energizer Park; visiting local schools, hospitals and nonprofits; and participating in the club's charitable activities. 'St. Louis has an unmatched charitable spirit and a desire to take care of each other,' said Ken Earley, Director of Community Relations at St. Louis CITY SC. 'Welcoming a team pet with the help of Purina is a tremendous asset that will enhance our club's ability to be an exceptional club and neighbor and make a positive impact across our region.' Founded in St. Louis, Purina manufactures some of the world's most trusted pet care products, including Purina ONE, Purina Pro Plan, Fancy Feast and Tidy Cats. We take pride in feeding 46 million dogs and 68 million cats each year. 500 Purina scientists, veterinarians, and pet care experts ensure our commitment to unsurpassed quality and nutrition.

5 New York Giants position battles to watch vs. New York Jets

The New York Giants will face off against their MetLife Stadium co-tenants, the New York Jets, in their annual preseason matchup this Saturday night. The two teams engaged in joint practices this week and now will play a full-contact game that will have roster ramifications on both sides. The Giants, however, still have much to decide before kickoff weekend, and this Saturday's game should settle some of those position battles. Here are five position battles to keep an eye on against the Jets. No. 2 cornerback With Paulson Adebo the clear No. 1 and Dru Phillips the starter in the slot, the Giants would like to get this thing settled. Deonte Banks has been working hard and has looked improved, but still isn't getting his head around some plays. His spatial awareness has to get better. Cor'Dale Flott shook off some earlier nicks and is now practicing in full. The best man will get the job. No. 4 wide receiver This was Jalin Hyatt's spot to lose, and he is in danger of losing it. The Giants have a lot of competition at the backup wideout positions with veterans such as Lil'Jordan Humphery, Ihmir Smith-Maresette, and Zach Pascal, and young players like Montrell Washington and Beaux Collins. Hyatt again is battling some nagging ailments, and his time could be running out here. No. 2 running back With top dog Tyrone Tracy Jr. not likely to see much action, and rookie Cam Skattebo still sidelined with a hamstring issue, the Giants will use Dante Miller, Jonathan Ward, and Devin Singletary in this game. Miller is the hot hand while the other two are more seasoned. Either way, the Giants' post-Barkley era backfield is looking pretty good. It would be nice to see Skattebo get some reps, though. Right guard Greg Van Roten, the only Giant to play 100 percent of the offensive snaps last season, is the starter. But he's 35 and the Giants are seeking longer-term solutions here. Enter a bunch of names, starting with Evan Neal and Jake Kubas. Other possibilities are rookie Marcus Mbow, who has primarily played tackle thus far, and even right tackle Jermaine Eluemunor. This spot is in play. Quarterback It's going to be a topic of conversation until it isn't. Russell Wilson will be the starter in Washington come kickoff weekend. The Giants owe him that much, but if rookie Jaxson Dart continues to ball out, the fans will make their preference known. For Wilson to stave off Dart, he'll have to show he can put up points. That's the goal here. If he can't, Dart will get his shot.
