Former Odisha CM Naveen Patnaik slams govt for scrapping metro project
"The Bhubaneswar Metro Rail Project would have reshaped how the city moves. Now, the double-engine government has pushed it 10 years back," Patnaik wrote. The first phase of the Rs 6,255 crore project, from the airport to Trisulia, was greenlit during Patnaik's tenure and scheduled to complete by December 2027. But the project was shelved recently, with DMRC issuing termination notices to contractors. The BJP government defended the move, saying the earlier route wasn't viable and that a more expansive Puri-Bhubaneswar-Cuttack corridor is being planned. "We are preparing a new DPR and forming a committee to study similar metros. The revised plan will connect all major cities," said Urban Development Minister Krushna Chandra Mohapatra.

Stalin-led DMK government is almost bankrupt due to poor policies, says Edappadi K. Palaniswami
AIADMK general secretary Edappadi K. Palaniswami on Monday claimed that the Stalin-led DMK Government, which was almost bankrupt due to its poor policies, was creating hurdles for giving loans to farmers by demanding unrealistic documents for sanctioning loans. Interacting with farmers and traders in Tirunelveli, he recalled that the erstwhile AIADMK government had twice waived off crop loans availed through cooperative banks and ensured disbursal of crop insurance benefits to the tune of ₹12,000 crore, the largest disbursal in the entire country, and gave ₹248 crore as drought relief. The party was taking every possible step to protect farmers and farming, he said. Recalling various programmes such as the 'Kudimaramathu scheme', construction of check-dams, and notification of the Cauvery Delta as a protected special agricultural zone during his regime, he alleged that the DMK government, which announced check-dams at a cost of ₹2,000 crore, had so far constructed only six of them. Mr. Palaniswami welcomed a suggestion by farmers' association representatives for opening direct paddy procurement centres in areas falling under city limits also. Secretary of Nellai Viyabaarigal Sangam M.R. Gunasekaran appealed to Mr Palaniswami to enact special law for protecting retail business and regularising online business. A representative of the Tamil Nadu Consumer Products Distributor Associations' Federation also said concrete measures should be taken by the governments to streamline online business, which was wiping out retail business and creating unemployment. Recalling the trader-friendly policies implemented by his erstwhile government, Mr. Palaniswami said: 'Since the Chief Minister should have a clear understanding about every issue, I used to take suggestions from officials through power-point presentations before attending meetings or Assembly sessions. But, it is not the case now. Problems are being created for traders.' Tamil Nadu Construction Workers Welfare Central Committee president S. Mahalingam said effective steps should be taken to control the skyrocketing prices of construction materials and the pension for construction workers should be raised to ₹3,000 a month from existing ₹1,200. The family pension should be increased to ₹1,000 a month and ₹2 lakh given for the natural death of construction workers.

Ajit urges immediate start to relocating project-affected residents
After state minister Chhagan Bhujbal raised concern over the slow pace of the Mahatma Phule Wada and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Memorial's expansion work, the Maharashtra government urged the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to immediately take up relocating project-affected residents and start the land acquisition process in 15 days. 'It is necessary to relocate residents living around the memorial. The relocation of those residents who are willing to move to alternative locations should begin immediately,' said Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar while conducting a review of the project. The state government has decided to preserve and expand Mahatma Phule Wada and Krantijyoti Savitribai Phule Memorial. State Food and Civil Supplies Minister Chhagan Bhujbal participated in the project review and expressed concern over slow pace in implementing the project, the site of which he visited last week in Pune. Pawar said the state government allocated Rs 200 crore for the land acquisition, gowever, this has not yet commenced. 'Around 1,000 residents around the memorial are to be relocated and options have been provided. Of these, 200 residents are willing to move to alternative locations, and relocation procedures for them should begin,' he said, adding that planning should be done to move the remaining residents in phases. Bhujbal said the expansion work should have been started by now, but the relocating nearby residents was still pending. 'Instead of relocating everyone at once, those who are ready to shift to alternative places should be moved first and their locations vacated. The remaining residents can then be relocated,' he said. Past govts patronised terrorists, tried to undermine Sanatan Dharma: CM
Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Monday lashed out at past governments in the state, alleging that they 'indulged in caste-based politics and appeasement, dividing society along caste lines while 'limiting the benefits of government schemes to one influential family.' Adityanath was addressing a gathering in Saharanpur after inaugurating 15 development projects worth Rs 381 crore. Criticising the Congress and the Samajwadi Party (SP), Adityanath accused them of 'patronising terrorists and attempting to undermine Sanatan Dharma'. He referred to the Malegaon blast case and the demolition of Ram Setu and alleged that earlier governments tried to tarnish the reputation of Hindu leaders and India's cultural heritage. The CM remarked that the 'double engine government' is 'not a buffalo cart but a bullet train.' He emphasised Saharanpur's spiritual roots, identifying it as the 'sacred land of Maa Shakumbhari and Mata Tripuri Bala Sundari.' He announced that the construction of Maa Shakumbhari University has been completed and its official inauguration would take place soon. He also shared plans for the Maa Shakumbhari Corridor and an elevated road to improve all-weather access to the pilgrimage site. The CM also spoke about the beautification of the ashram of Jahar Veer Goga, a warrior saint who resisted foreign invaders 900 years ago and attained samadhi here after meeting Baba Gorakhnath. He noted that the ashram has now been transformed into a cultural site. Adityanath said that his government is committed to ensuring a balance between development and the preservation of cultural heritage. He announced that under the Smart City Mission, all municipal bodies at district headquarters across the state will be developed as smart cities. He said that the travel time between Saharanpur and Delhi has now been reduced to just three hours. The Chief Minister announced that women will be able to travel free of cost on buses on August 8, 9 and 10 as part of Raksha Bandhan celebrations. The Chief Minister called upon the public to organise Tiranga Yatras and collectively sing the National Anthem on August 15, in honour of Independence Day. Adityanath handed over certificates of appreciation, demo cheques, as well as keys to houses and tractors to beneficiaries of several government schemes.
