Two Alabama football legends on College Football Hall of Fame ballot for 2026
A pair of Alabama football legends are under consideration for the College Football Hall of Fame's 2026 class.
On Monday, the National Football Foundation (NFF) announced the names of 79 former players and coaches who are under consideration for Hall of Fame induction. Two former Crimson Tide players are eligible for induction in the 2026 class: linebacker DeMeco Ryans and Alabama's first Heisman Trophy winner, running back Mark Ingram.
Mark Ingram (2008-10)
Ingram was a huge contributor for Alabama's first national championship team in 17 years -- and the Crimson Tide's first under Nick Saban -- in 2009. The Flint, Michigan, high school star rushed for 1,658 yards and 17 rushing touchdowns en route to both the Heisman Trophy and SEC Offensive Player of the Year honors.
In that year's SEC Championship Game against Florida, Ingram ran for 113 yards and three touchdowns to go with a 69-yard catch-and-run as the Crimson Tide dethroned the defending national champions and quarterback Tim Tebow. A month later, Ingram was the offensive MVP in the Tide's 37-21 BCS Championship Game win over Texas at the Rose Bowl, going for 116 yards and two touchdowns.
He finished his career at Alabama with 3,261 rushing yards and 42 touchdowns and single-handedly took over such games as the Crimson Tide's 20-6 win over South Carolina in 2009 when the offense had fallen into a midseason rut. Ingram rushed for 246 yards (10.3 AVG) -- primarily out of the Wildcat -- against Steve Spurrier's Gamecocks on Oct. 17 as Alabama improved to 7-0.
DeMeco Ryans (2002-05)
Ryans was a star linebacker at Alabama for one season under Dennis Franchione and three seasons under Mike Shula. He won the Lott IMPACT Trophy in his senior season in 2005 as part of a 10-win Alabama team that defeated Texas Tech in the Cotton Bowl and had thrilling regular-season wins over Tennessee and Florida.
That same year, Ryans was named SEC Defensive Player of the Year and still holds the Alabama single-game record for tackles with 25. In his final season in Tuscaloosa, Ryans led defensive coordinator Joe Kines' unit with 76 tackles (9.5 for loss) and had 3.5 sacks, plus an interception and a forced fumble.
Controversial former Alabama head coach under consideration for College Football Hall of Fame
Speaking of Franchione, the two-year former Crimson Tide coach is one of nine former college football coaches on the ballot for Hall of Fame induction in 2026. Franchione led Alabama to a 7-5 season in his first year in 2001, including a 31-7 upset win over Auburn at Jordan-Hare Stadium in that year's Iron Bowl.
Alabama went 10-3 in Franchione's next season in 2002 before he bolted for the Texas A&M job.
The announcement for the Hall of Fame class will be made in early 2026.

Legendary football coach returns to the sidelines as Alabama school names him interim coach originally appeared on The Sporting News One of the legendary, albeit controversial, high school head football coaches in the country is going to lead another team in the 2025 season. Rush Propst, who has guided programs in Alabama and Georgia, has been named the interim coach at Coosa Christian, located in Gadsden, Ala. He is taking over for head coach Mark O'Bryant, who was recently suspended for the 2025 season, confirming that in an interview with O'Bryant led the Conquerors to a 9-1 record in '24 but was banned in the postseason and had to forfeit five games due to the use of an ineligible player. Because of the school suspending O'Bryant, the Alabama High School Athletic Association lifted the imposed postseason ban, meaning the Conquerors are eligible for the playoffs should they qualify. Now, Coosa Christian turns its program temporarily over to someone who, though extremely successful, has a checkered past himself. Propst has won 296 career games along with seven state championships. He may be well known for his tenure at another Alabama school, Hoover, where he won five state titles from 1999-2007. The program was also featured on the MTV documentary series Two-A-Days, which filmed for two of the Buccaneers' seasons. However, Propst resigned at Hoover in 2007 in the wake of the program having to forfeit several wins due to using an ineligible player. He later coached at Georgia schools Colquitt County and Valdosta, as well as another Alabama school, Pell City. While at Colquitt County, during a 2015 playoff game, Propst head-butted one of his players, which initially led to him being suspended for the 2016 season, though the decision was eventually appealed. Propst resigned at Pell City following the 2023 season - his only season there - after the team went 1-10. Now, Propst gets another chance to lead a team, while perhaps getting the opportunity to record his 300th career win. Baker, Emily Mayfield surprise Oklahoma Sooners walk-on WR with scholarship
Being a walk-on player in college football is a tough gig. There are no guarantees that you'll have a spot on the roster from year to year, and there are even fewer guarantees that you'll ever see the field. The Oklahoma Sooners have college football's most famous and most successful walk-on player of all-time as one of their alumni, former Heisman Trophy-winning quarterback Baker Mayfield. He began as a walk-on at Texas Tech and then Oklahoma, before the Sooners put him on scholarship in 2014. On Wednesday morning, Mayfield showed some love to one of the Sooners' current walk-ons in a surprise announcement. OU's team meeting on Wednesday featured a video message from Mayfield and his wife Emily. They were handing out the first of two Baker and Emily Mayfield Foundation Walk-On Scholarships. This scholarship awards a walk-on player at OU with a $10,000 scholarship. The Mayfields shared a personalized message to walk-on wide receiver Jakeb Snyder, telling him that he had been awarded the scholarship. "We wanted to say congratulations,' Emily said. "Your hard work and mindset really stood out to us and truly spoke volumes. Staying late, running extra routes, studying film, and showing up every single day.' "As a former walk-on, I know the grind,' Baker said. "No promises, just work. That's why I'm proud to name you, Jakeb Snyder, OU receiver, Oklahoma native and first-ever recipient of the Baker and Emily Mayfield walk-on scholarship.' Snyder is entering his third season with the Sooners in 2025. He had played defensive back for each of the last two seasons before making the switch to WR this offseason. Snyder made two game appearances as a redshirt freshman in 2024, playing on special teams against Temple and Maine. Prior to walking on in Norman, Snyder helped lead the Bixby High School Spartans to three consecutive state championships. During his senior season, he led Bixby with 53 receptions for 459 yards and six touchdowns while adding 55 tackles, including three for a loss, and four interceptions on defense. Snyder chose a walk-on role at Oklahoma over a scholarship offer from Navy. The role of the walk-on player is still being defined in the NIL/transfer portal age of college football. Originally, it looked like roster limits were going to be capped at 105 total players beginning this year, before a new policy was put in place that allowed walk-ons already on the roster to be grandfathered in during the transition period. However, those roster caps will eventually be in place, limiting the number of walk-on players that teams can carry each year. Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney is heavily in favor of keeping more walk-ons on the team, and he told reporters in a press conference earlier this summer that some of his walk-ons practiced with no promise of a roster spot once the season started. They've now been grandfathered in, but not every walk-on across the country was that fortunate. Players like Snyder and the other walk-ons the Sooners have on their current 111-man roster decided to stick around, despite there being no guarantees, and they were rewarded with the grandfather policy. Snyder now heads into the new season on scholarship, a testament to what hard work can accomplish. The most notable, of course, is the SEC-Big Ten showdown between No. 1 Texas and No. 3 Ohio State at Ohio Stadium in Columbus, Ohio on Saturday, Aug. 30 on FOX. This will be a pivotal year for the Big Ten, which has been hard at work to make its mark as the top conference in modern-day college football. Big Ten teams, Michigan and Ohio State, have won the past two College Football Playoff National Championships. Big Ten teams also went 4-0 against SEC teams in the CFP over that same span. He posted a career-high 8.0 sacks and was tied for the conference lead in forced fumbles (three). At 6-foot-3, 275 pounds and agile as can be, Jacas is the type of edge rusher that NFL teams clamor over. He's likely to be a first-round draft pick in 2026, and his stock could rise into the top 10 depending on how he builds off last season. In 2024, he had 10.5 sacks and matched Jacas' total of 13 tackles for loss as a sophomore. With potential question marks on Oregon's offense at wide receiver and quarterback, Uiagaleilei and the pass rush might have to be the leading unit on the team if the Ducks want to achieve another undefeated regular season. Purdue went 5-19 over the past two seasons, but Thieneman surpassed 100 total tackles in each of those. Despite the Ducks going undefeated last regular season, their defense ranked 11th in the Big Ten in rushing yards allowed (130 per game). Thieneman's ability to win at the second-level and prevent big plays on the ground will be crucial for Oregon to improve on that mark. Between his sophomore and junior seasons at Penn State, he increased his completion percentage from 59.9% to 66.5%. That improvement in accuracy helped the Nittany Lions make a run to the CFP semifinals. The stakes, though, have never been higher for Allar. He enters his senior season tied for the fifth-best odds to win the Heisman Trophy (+1600) and he's leading Joel Klatt's preseason top-25 No. 1 ranked team. If everything goes right, he could be the top quarterback prospect in the 2026 NFL Draft. Singleton rushed for 1,099 yards and 12 touchdowns in 2024 and added 375 yards and five touchdowns through the air. His rushing ability keeps opposing defenses honest, while his consistent improvement as a route-runner has given Allar a safety blanket in the passing game.
