Austin woman injured in Freeborn County crash
Jun. 4—A 69-year-old Austin woman was injured Tuesday afternoon after her vehicle and a semi collided on Interstate 90 one mile east of Albert Lea.
Titian Elizabeth Butash was taken by ambulance to Mayo Clinic Health System in Austin for injuries deemed not life-threatening, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.
The report stated Butash was driving a 2007 Ford Focus eastbound on I-90 near milepost 158, along with a 2020 Peterbilt semi truck driven by Spencer John Theis, 33, of Belle Plaine, when the two vehicles collided at 3:26 p.m.
Theis was not injured.
Both drivers were wearing their seat belts, and alcohol was not a factor, the report stated.
The Clarks Grove Fire Department and Mayo Clinic Ambulance assisted at the scene.

17-year-old in serious condition after two-car crash
IRON COUNTY, Utah () — A 17-year-old boy is in serious condition after two cars collided with each other on Highway 56 in Iron County. UPDATE: Two vehicle accident on I-90 sends one to the hospital
Jun. 5—A two-vehicle crash Thursday afternoon involving a semi on Interstate-90 sent one to the hospital and congested traffic for a time. According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash took place early Thursday afternoon at around 12:47 p.m. and included one of the vehicles. A 2023 Chevrolet Silverado driven by Michael William Kiesler, 62 of Waseca, was left on its side and the 2025 Kenworth semi driven by James Arthur Ward, 59, of Roland, Iowa settled part way in the ditch off of the westbound lane of I-90. Both vehicles were traveling westbound on I-90 at the time of the crash, which happened just east of Fourth Street NW. Kiesler was transported to St. Mary's Hospital Rochester with non-life threatening injuries while Ward was uninjured. The Austin Police Department, Austin Fire Department and Mayo Ambulance responded.

Law enforcement say testing drivers for marijuana use presents challenges
As recreational cannabis becomes more and more accessible in Minnesota, law enforcement is dealing with the complicated issue of determining when someone is driving high. A 2024 AAA survey found that nearly 85% of pot users say they drove the same day as they used. Those surveyed also said they used within an hour of driving. A Minnesota pilot program on cheek swab testing found that 87% of those pulled over for suspected driving under the influence of drugs tested positive for at least one drug, the most common being marijuana. Many might not know how cannabis impacts their driving abilities. "A lot of what we do is educating the public on that. The laws come very fast, they are confusing, so that is part of our job as well," said Sgt. Tyler Milless with the Minnesota State Patrol. For the cheek swab test, troopers are looking for what's called Delta-9. "The oral fluid device only tests for the active ingredient in cannabis, for Delta-9 tetrahydrocannabinol," said Milless. "Delta-9 is the primary ingredient in cannabis. That is what causes impairment." But the swab test is not admissible in court. "If there is suspected products or substances other than alcohol, law enforcement would apply for a search warrant and obtain a blood or urine sample from that driver," said Milles. One way drivers might end up having a search warrant issued for their blood or urine is that the marijuana is not stored in the vehicle in the legal way. "Our law is very clear if it is not in the original container or it's been open, it has be in the trunk or furthest most back area of the car," said Milles.
