Report lodged against portal

By: Johan Aziz Text Size: KENINGAU: Parti Solidariti Tanah Airku (Star) Bingkor Division has lodged a police report against Malaysiakini over a report it says is serious, false and unfounded. The report was written by two journalists by the portal on the same date and caused confusion and slander against the party's top leadership, it said.
Advertisement Bingkor Division StarSabah Women Head, Jennifer Epil together with Bingkor Division Permanent Chairman, Haji Yazid Haji Mohd Hasnan Tawik @ Charles, Bingkor Division Youth Head, Florian @ Jai Ilon and several Youth and Women Committee Members lodged the report at the District Police headquarters, Saturday. They said the report baselessly claimed that Party President Datuk Seri Panglima Dr Jeffrey G. Kitingan received a bribe of RM1.78 million linked to the mining licence scandal. The allegations also involved two Party Deputy Presidents, Datuk Ellron Alfred Angin and Datuk Robert Tawik, who allegedly received bribes of RM530,000 and RM300,000, respectively. Yazid said the allegations were a malicious attempt to tarnish the good name of the party leadership ahead of the increasingly vibrant political season. 'The party will take appropriate legal action against any individual or organization involved in spreading false news,' he said. NST Leader: Of defence assets and agents
AUG 16 will be a day that the people who matter in the Defence Ministry will never forget. It was the day His Majesty Sultan Ibrahim, King of Malaysia disclosed to the nation that the ministry was full of agents, ex-generals turned salesmen and even textile merchants peddling drones. He made this disclosure in his royal address during the parade marking the 60th anniversary of the Special Forces Regiment at Kem Iskandar in Mersing, Johor. Relying on agents is a dangerous pursuit for an institution that is tasked with defending the country. And in case they forget, three days later, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim reminded those responsible for procuring defence assets to end the reliance on agents when replying to a question in Parliament. The Defence Ministry, he said, had faced decades of controversies and scandals involving procurement, forcing the government to adopt government-to-government negotiations. Why then is the Defence Ministry packed with agents? Perhaps the RM5 billion defence procurement and development spending in 2024 — an increase of RM2 billion from that of 2020 — has something to do with it. A royal reprimand and a prime ministerial reminder say a lot about the seriousness of the problem. Enough of the "the decades of controversies and scandals", we say. We know that middlemen is a Malaysian malaise, but of all places in the Defence Ministry? The use of agents — ex-generals or otherwise — comes with at least two dangers. Let's begin with the more dangerous of the dangers: poor quality of defence assets peddled by the agents. Compromise the defence assets, then you compromise the defence of the country. Defence assets of quality don't need agents to peddle them. Nations will beat the path to their door. It is "flying coffins", to borrow a royal phrase, like the second-hand A-4 Skyhawk aircraft bought in the 1980s, that need the hawking, excuse the pun. Scrap the plan to buy the 30-year-old Black Hawk helicopters, Sultan Ibrahim ordered the Defence Ministry. Media reports say the armed forces is scrapping its plan to buy four Black Hawk helicopters at a cost of RM187 million. But the question is: why wait for the royal command? Isn't the internal process robust enough to raise red flags? Or is integrity a challenge? Dropping the purchase of the helicopters is just the first step. More needs to be done. The primary interest of agents, even ex-generals turned salesmen, is how much they can get out of the deal. The quality of the defence assets they are hawking or whether or not they are compromising the security of the nation is secondary. For Malaysia, a nation of small means, every ringgit spent must show up its worth. The purchase of 88 second-hand A-4 Skyhawk jets did the exact opposite. It drained the country's coffers of millions. Although the price tag was US$1 million each, getting them refurbished took years, spiralling the cost to four times that to RM1.2 billion, media reports say. Then there is the Scorpene submarine deal in 2002 that cost US$130 million in commission. If this is how we do procurement of defence assets, even hundreds of billions wouldn't be enough.

KPWKM ready to provide input on anti-bullying tribunal proposal
PUTRAJAYA: The Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development has expressed its readiness to provide input on the proposal to establish a tribunal to address bullying cases involving students and children. Minister Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri confirmed this commitment following the launch of the Wall of Iron Strong programme by Danone Malaysia. She explained that KPWKM's involvement stems from its responsibility for the Child Act 2001 and other related legislation. 'The ministry that plays a fairly important role is our ministry (KPWKM),' Nancy told reporters. 'We are just waiting for it to be brought to the Cabinet and will provide input based on what is presented, as we are responsible for the Child Act 2001 and other acts concerning children.' She added that the ministry would need to assess the tribunal's relevance to their jurisdiction. 'However, we may have to look at what is relevant to the it falls within the jurisdiction of our ministry (KPWKM), we will work hard on it; (otherwise), it may be under the Legal Affairs Division (BHEUU).' Nancy welcomed the proposal to establish the tribunal, emphasizing KPWKM's consistent commitment to collaboration. She stated that KPWKM had always been committed to collaborating with all parties for the welfare and well-being of children. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim previously announced that the tribunal proposal would be brought before a Cabinet meeting. Minister in the Prime Minister's Department (Law and Institutional Reform) Datuk Seri Azalina Othman Said will present the proposal. Azalina had earlier confirmed the government was studying the need for an Anti-Bullying Act with emphasis on establishing a tribunal. She highlighted the importance of policy-level discussions involving multiple ministries. 'Discussions at the policy level were crucial, as each relevant ministry, including KPWKM, the Ministry of Education, the Ministry of Higher Education, and the Ministry of National Unity, had its own views on the enforcement aspects of the act.' Azalina also noted the current lack of specific legal definitions or penalties for bullying offences. Separately, Nancy announced KPWKM's continued collaboration with Danone to enhance children's welfare. The Wall of Iron Strong programme represents a joint effort with the National Population and Family Development Board to tackle anaemia. Danone's Iron Strong Study revealed alarming statistics about childhood anaemia in Malaysia. 'One in three children aged six to 36 months was at risk of anaemia,' Nancy shared. 'The findings revealed that children aged six to 12 months face the highest risk at 34.5 per cent, with the risk remaining high at 27.7 per cent for those between 12 and 36 months.' She emphasized that these figures represent real challenges faced by Malaysian families. 'These figures are not just statistics; they reflect the real challenges faced by many families in Malaysia, particularly young parents striving to provide the best for their children.' Nancy stressed the serious consequences of iron deficiency on child development. 'Iron deficiency was not a minor issue, as it could affect children's growth, learning ability, and self-confidence.' The government supports mandatory screening for iron deficiency at children's clinics nationwide. 'This move is also in line with the 13th Malaysia Plan, which underscores the importance of preventive healthcare and expanding access to infrastructure and basic services, including in rural areas.' - Bernama

Police Seize Meth Worth RM13.6 Mln, Uncover Drug Storage House
SHAH ALAM, Aug 20 (Bernama) -- Police arrested five men and seized 425.25 kilogrammes (kg) of methamphetamine worth RM13.6 million in four raids conducted around Puchong and Kuala Lumpur on Monday. Bukit Aman Narcotics Criminal Investigation Department director Commissioner Datuk Hussein Omar Khan said those arrested were aged between 33 and 64, including the syndicate leader. He said the series of raids, which began at 11.20 am, also uncovered a terraced house used as a drug storage facility. "The first suspect was arrested at a parking area in Puchong town centre with 103.87 kg of methamphetamine found inside the car he was driving, followed by the arrest of another suspect in the second raid along the main road of the Damansara-Puchong Expressway (LDP), where 37.21 grammes (g) of methamphetamine were seized. "The third raid at a restaurant in Bandar Puchong Jaya led to the arrest of the third and fourth suspects, and checks at a terraced house in the same area uncovered 321.02 kg of methamphetamine," he said at a press conference here today. Hussein said the fifth suspect, identified as the coordinator or leader of the syndicate, was nabbed at a parking area near the Sri Petaling LRT station in Kuala Lumpur during the operation, which ended around 12.40 pm. Initial investigations found that the first and second suspects acted as transporters, while the third and fourth suspects were storekeepers. Their modus operandi was to use terraced houses as storage facilities before distributing the drugs to the local market. Police did not rule out the possibility that the drugs were also intended to be distributed to Sabah and Sarawak, as well as smuggled into Kalimantan, Indonesia. "Urine tests showed three of the suspects tested positive for ketamine, and all of them have prior criminal records involving crime and drugs," he said, adding that they are remnants of a major syndicate dismantled by police in Bagan Datuk, Perak, back in March.
