CNN20-05-2025

Memorial Day is one of the best times of year to buy a new TV. Whether you're looking for a larger screen to watch your beloved MLB team (hopefully) earn some wins, aiming to recreate the theater experience at home or just shopping for a replacement for an aging television, tons of notable deals are live right now.
I've been shopping retail holiday deals for nearly a decade, meaning I know a thing or two about which discounts are worth adding to cart and which aren't worth your hard-earned cash. As for the former, I found 26 of the best early Memorial Day deals you can buy now.
TCL 75-Inch QM6K QLED 4K Smart TV

Hisense 65-Inch U8N Mini-LED Smart Google TV
The 65-inch version of our favorite mid-range TV just dropped to its second-best price of the year. Today's offer comes within $102 of the Amazon low from over Presidents Day and is the first offer since. Still, this price cut is a notable chance to see why we raved about this TV's solid picture quality, brightness and smooth visuals without spending full price.Read our review
Samsung 55-Inch The Frame TV

Giving Samsung's The Frame a run for its money, this Hisense CanvasTV sports the same picture frame-inspired look and is now 30% off. Its $698 sale price is within $8 of its all-time low.
Samsung The Frame Pro TV
Samsung's taken the most popular art TV and improved its picture quality and aesthetics thanks to the Wireless One Connect Box. This new Pro edition launched earlier this spring and is seeing its first discount of $200 for Memorial Day.Read our review
Samsung 55-Inch Neo QLED Smart TV
This new 2025 QLED TV from Samsung is going on sale for one of the first times since launching earlier this spring. It's a new all-time low at $500 off and delivers 4K picture quality, 144Hz refresh rates and a Mini-LED panel.
Samsung 65-Inch The Frame 4K Art TV
The new 2025 edition of The Frame TV is also going on sale for the first time to join its Pro counterpart. This 65-inch model may only be $100 off, but it's the first chance to save on the latest and greatest Art TV from Samsung. It comes with a new Mini-LED panel and better refresh rates for gaming.
Samsung 55-Inch S85D OLED Smart TV
This 55-inch OLED is now $800 off for Memorial Day. Samsung backs its S85D series with Pantone-validated colors for vibrant reds, greens and blues as well as dark black shades.

Samsung's NQ8 chip and AI upscaling tech are just two standouts from this impressive 8K TV. It's one of the best values on the list for anyone hoping to bring as many pixels as possible into their home theater, especially now that it's $1,500 off.
Insignia 70-Inch F50 4K Smart Fire TV
A 70-inch TV for under $400 is unheard of, but that's the kind of deal you can expect for Memorial Day. This Insignia model, an in-house Best Buy brand, is down to its best price at $130 off.
Sony 65-Inch Bravia 8 OLED Smart Google TV
The Sony Bravia line offers one of the best viewing experiences a home theater could have. This 65-inch model packs an OLED display, Google smart tech and most features we loved when we reviewed the A95L version. Today's offer is $100 below the previous discounted price I tracked from over Presidents Day weekend.
Samsung 65-Inch S90D 4K OLED TV
Samsung's newest OLED TV arrives in five sizes, ranging from compact 42-inch setups to massive 83-inch home theater experiences. The 65-inch version is the best deal of the bunch and perfectly shows why this is an upgraded version of the best TV you can buy.

LG 65-Inch C4 OLED Evo Smart TV
LG has a great reputation for its OLED TVs, and this C4 model might just be the best of the whole lineup. A $300 discount means you can enjoy its rich contrast and no-sacrifice movie-watching experience for the best price in months.
Insignia 65-Inch F50 Smart Fire TV
If you're looking for one of the most affordable 65-inch TVs on this list, look no further than this budget-friendly option from Insignia. It runs on Amazon's Fire TV platform, and it is the best bang for your buck at $150 off.
Samsung 65-Inch DU6900 Smart Tizen TV
This might be $50 above the Insignia TV, but it's a great option for those who want to bring home a name-brand model without splurging on the fancier Samsung options. A $120 discount makes this tried-and-true model an even better value.
Vizio V4K 55-Inch 4K Smart TV
This Vizio TV is nearly half off at Walmart. It features a 55-inch 4K panel and built-in streaming services, making the $264 price tag an even better value. It's easily one of the best Memorial Day discounts available right now, especially for those who don't need a larger screen.
Roku 55-Inch Select Smart Roku TV
If you're already a fan of using a Roku streaming media player and are looking for a television upgrade, you may as well dive into one of the brand's in-house TVs. This 55-inch model is more than $100 off to make the switch easier on your wallet.
Samsung 65-Inch DU7200B Crystal Smart TV
This mid-range Samsung TV offers one of the brand's beloved panels alongside 3D speakers and its smart streaming features. For Memorial Day, it's all yours for under $400.
LG 70-Inch UHD Smart TV
Most people don't need a 70-inch TV, but I can actually recommend this one while it's $150 off for Memorial Day. It delivers LG's webOS smart features alongside the massive screen at a reasonable price.
Vizio 43-Inch Full HD Smart TV
Your guest room could use an updated TV, and this 43-inch Vizio won't break the bank. You won't have to worry about buying a separate streaming box either, because of its built-in smart features.
Onn. 65-Inch Smart Roku TV
Onn. gives Insignia a run for its money with the best price you'll find on a 65-inch TV. It's $150 off before the holiday weekend and offers built-in smart features alongside a 4K display. Not to mention, nearly 30,000 shoppers have vouched for this Walmart bestseller. CNN Underscored's deals experts are constantly shopping for the best discounts on the web. Outside of holiday weekends, we cover weekly guides to the best price cuts from specific retailers. These early Memorial Day deals are worth a closer look now, considering many are down to the lowest prices of the year, even beating previous discounts I've covered.
I'm constantly tracking price cuts across multiple online storefronts to ensure the deals are as good as the retailers say. The rest of the deals team and I dive into the price history of each product while cross-referencing reviews and guides from other CNN Underscored editors to determine if it's worth your cash.
Quite simply, our goal here at Underscored is to save you money. Our senior deals editor Rikka Altland has been doing just that for nearly a decade, and that kind of experience extends to the rest of our deals team. Being an advocate for buyers to make sure we're only recommending the best prices on the best products is what we're all about, and that focus comes across in our work.

No Pipeline, No Progress: Meeting The Demand For Advanced Degrees

As demand for master's and doctoral degrees surges, too few programs exist to support the students most often excluded—despite their potential. The United States stands at a crossroads. While innovation, competitiveness, and global leadership increasingly depend on highly educated workers, access to graduate education remains deeply unequal and underfunded. Over 60% of business and government leaders hold graduate degrees—with more than half in business and nearly a third in law. A 2020 report by Brint and colleagues found that 61% of top media figures and 78% of think tank and foundation leaders also held advanced degrees. In many leadership roles, graduate education is no longer a competitive advantage—it's a requirement. Demand is rising. A 2024 report from Georgetown University's Center on Education and the Workforce projects that nearly 1 in 5 jobs will soon require an advanced degree. Among 'good jobs'—those offering middle-class wages of $43,000 or more—1 in 4 will demand graduate credentials. Yet access to graduate education remains deeply inequitable. Madeline Brighouse Glueck finds that parental education still shapes graduate enrollment, especially in high-investment, high-return programs like law, medicine, and PhDs. In medicine alone, over 75% of students come from the top two income quintiles. Even academically qualified first-generation and low-income students are often left behind. While families with financial and social capital can navigate elite admissions and cover soaring costs, others are shut out. The only federally funded graduate pipeline program is the McNair Scholars Program, which supports first-generation, low-income, and underrepresented undergraduates seeking PhDs. This program—and others like Upward Bound—are now at risk of being defunded. As the federal government grows increasingly hostile toward identity-based programs in higher education, the burden of promoting equitable access is falling to the private sector and nonprofit organizations. Yet only a handful of national nonprofits directly focus on this issue: These organizations are doing powerful work—but their combined reach can only serve a fraction of the students who deserve access. To meet the moment, coordinated investments are needed—not just in graduate preparation, but also in affordability, mentorship, and long-term support: Graduate education is not a luxury—it is a national imperative. If we want to lead in science, health, law, and business—and if we believe in opportunity—we must invest in the people who will lead those fields. Let's ensure that talent, not zip code or family background, determines who has a seat at the table. Change can't wait. The time to invest is now. —--------- Help us widen the pipeline. The Cheapest Pickup Trucks You Can Buy in 2025 Aren't All Small

Almost across the board, pickup truck prices are creeping upward. Most of this is due to inflation (and more recently, tariffs), but formerly cheap trucks like the new generation Toyota Tacoma are going somewhat upmarket, while the price creep affecting the cheapest pickups like the Ford Maverick appears to be due to automakers capitalizing on unexpected success and, again, more recently, responding to tariffs. (The Maverick, like some other trucks on this list, is assembled outside of the U.S., which raises price pressure compared to home built options.) For now, the cheapest work trucks you can buy can still be had for under $40,000, but you don't need us to tell you that the versions of the most common full-size trucks most consumers buy are in the $50,000 to $60,000 range. Of course, the base price isn't the only metric by which to measure a truck, but it's an important one. If you want to explore other ways pickup trucks stack up against each other, MotorTrend 's proprietary algorithm provides the ultimate source of automotive data by combining over 75 years of our own instrumented performance, comfort, and efficiency testing on more than 5,000 vehicles.
