Funeral of England cricket legend Syd Lawrence held in Bristol

ITV News6 days ago
The funeral of England cricket legend David 'Syd' Lawrence MBE is being held in Bristol today.
The former fast bowler, who played for Gloucestershire as well as the national team, died aged 61 last month after being diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease in 2024.
A service is being held at St Mary Redcliffe Church in the city, where family, close friends and former team-mates will gather to remember the cricketer who became a legend of the sport.
The lasting legacy of a cricketing legend
David 'Syd' Lawrence, was the first British-born black cricketer to represent England.
He was a strapping fast bowler who was renowned for being one of the quickest on the county circuit, Lawrence began to establish himself in Tests and a five-for against the West Indies in 1991 helped England seal a series-levelling win at the Oval, with Desmond Haynes and Viv Richards among his haul.
But Lawrence's career all but ended the following year as he badly fractured his kneecap after falling awkwardly when running into bowl on the final day of a Test against New Zealand in Wellington.
His England days were immediately over aged 28 but he made a brief county comeback in 1997, playing four first-class games for Gloucestershire before hanging up his boots – 16 years after he first played professionally.
Lawrence became a competitive bodybuilder following his retirement and he was also a nightclub owner in Bristol.
After Lawrence detailed his experiences of racism during his playing career, Gloucestershire issued an unreserved apology in September 2021 and six months later he became the county's first black president.
He was appointed an MBE in the King's Birthday Honours weeks before he died for his services to cricket.

Carlos Sainz Jr's 'ask Christian Horner' response as he clears up Max Verstappen rift rumours

Carlos Sainz Jr joined Williams for the 2025 campaign, but many believed the former Ferrari ace was going to make a return to Red Bull, 10 years after his one and only full campaign Carlos Sainz Jr believes only Christian Horner knows why Red Bull did not try to sign him as Max Verstappen's partner. Lewis Hamilton's switch to Ferrari brought down the curtain on Sainz's time with Scuderia. ‌ As Sergio Perez struggled in the second Red Bull car last year, Sainz had a more successful final season with Ferrari. He finished fifth in the overall standings, 67 points ahead of his successor Hamilton and 138 ahead of Perez. ‌ After the Mexican's exit from Red Bull was confirmed, it seemed logical for Horner – who was recently sacked by the Milton Keynes based F1 team – to consider Sainz. However, nearly a year after Helmut Marko claimed Sainz and Verstappen had a toxic relationship in their campaign together in 2015, Liam Lawson was instead promoted to the second seat. ‌ He was swiftly replaced by fellow Racing Bulls graduate Yuki Tsunoda after just two Grands Prix. Sainz, who went on to join Williams, admitted he was confused as to why Red Bull did not try and sign him, stating he has a good relationship with Verstappen. On The High Performance podcast, when asked if he thinks Verstappen didn't want him at Red Bull, Sainz replied: "This is what people have concluded or how people are trying to explain or understand it. "The only thing I can say is that you will need to go and ask Christian or whoever seems competent to answer this question. The only thing I could say is that I genuinely get on well with Max. "That is what people do not see from the outside. We had a rivalry in our first year in F1, but it was a relatively healthy rivalry in terms of him and me, the way we used to go about racing. "Now we get on really well. So if that's the reason, I don't understand why they would not want me next to Max, because I think we would actually be a very strong pairing in F1." ‌ Horner was recently dismissed as team principal, with Verstappen currently behind leader Oscar Piastri and Lando Norris in the Driver's Championship table. Sainz has also struggled at Williams and remains without a podium finish. Whilst there was a touch of frustration in Sainz's comments, the Madrid-born racer has also looked at the broader perspective. He added: "I think everyone is having a really tough time being Max's team-mate. I can only say that when I was Max's team-mate, I did not have this really tough time. I was obviously, incredibly, surprised with how quick he was. ‌ "He is an insane driver. He is going to go out as one of the best drivers in history, if he's not already one of the best ever in history, but that first year together, since then, has given me the confidence to know that I can be up against anyone. "I have been team-mates with Charles (LeClerc), Lando (Norris) and Nico (Hulkenberg), I have been team-mates with very quick guys, probably the best in the sport, and now Alexander (Albon) who is incredibly fast. "It just makes me want to be up against the best still, it hasn't made me go, 'No, I don't want this.' I know I can take it and I know I have been successful in the past."

Alexander Isak NOT on Newcastle pre-season tour as Liverpool transfer target stays home

Alexander Isak has NOT travelled with Newcastle for their pre-season tour of Asia. There are reports that Isak, 25, is nursing a thigh injury little over a week after Liverpool made an approach for his services. It comes just days after Newcastle boss Eddie Howe sent the striker home because of the 'speculation' surrounding his future. Isak had been involved in the Magpies' training camp in Austria. Newcastle insist that the Swede isn't for sale and would demand at least £125million - a British record - if they were forced to sell. Isak was left out of Newcastle's squad as they faced Celtic in their second pre-season friendly on Saturday, as they suffered a 4-0 thrashing. Howe's men are due to play Arsenal in Singapore at 12:30pm on Sunday. Newcastle will then play two matches in South Korea, facing the K-League All-stars and Tottenham. But Isak won't be involved, with the club reportedly concerned over how the long-haul flight could impact the Liverpool target's injury. Isak has also been linked with a big-money move to Saudi Arabian heavyweights Al-Hilal. Following the Celtic defeat, Howe explained: "It was my decision. He travelled back to Glasgow with us but I decided to send him home due to the speculation around him. "The last thing he wanted is to be sat in the stand watching, that wasn't fair to him. But I'm confident he will be a Newcastle player come the end of the window. "It's difficult for me to give 100 per cent clarity on any player. Alex is happy at Newcastle, he loves the players, the staff, the team. I'm confident he'll be here at the start of the season. "Yes, I've had discussions with him but that's not abnormal. I respect a player's career and how short it is. Alex has been really good, he's trained really well and I realise there'll be noise around him." Isak also didn't feature when the Magpies hosted non-league side Carlisle United in a behind-closed-doors friendly prior to their visit to Austria.

The legendary stadium, which opened way back in 1853, has hosted a series of sporting events in the past. That includes Aussie Rules, football, rugby league and of course cricket. And now it will host a British and Irish Lions Test match for the first time on Saturday. The crowd is expected to surpass the 84,000 that attended the Lions' deciders against Australia in Sydney back in 2001 and 2013. The Wallabies' stars are counting down the hours until they get to step on the "Mecca of sport". Rob Valetini told the BBC: "It's going to be really awesome for me. And Harry Potter added: "It is a Mecca of sport in my eyes." This comes after cricket legend Damien Fleming dubbed the ground as the "greatest sporting stadium in the world". Despite the fact Melbourne isn't known for rugby union, the locals love sport and the G so much that officials are confident both teams will enjoy a stunning atmosphere. Andy Farrell wants end to social media 'nonsense' after son Owen's Lions call The exact number of Lions fans attending the game is hard to pinpoint due to expats living Down Under. But it is estimated that more than 30,000 will make the long trip.
