How to watch Fever at Storm: Caitlin Clark leads Indiana against surging Seattle

New York Times5 hours ago

Caitlin Clark is looking to get right, and her Indiana Fever are trying to salvage their last leg of a dispiriting West Coast road trip. Clark's crew has another tough draw on Tuesday night, visiting the experienced and steely Seattle Storm. Paced by perennial All-WNBA talents Nneka Ogwumike and Skylar Diggins, the hosts take their floor with six wins in their last seven games. The forecast is calling for buckets.

It's a relief and a delight to see Clark balling out again, after a late-May quad injury sidelined her for five games. Her immediate return was brain-scrambling in the very best way — 32 points, nine assists, eight boards and seven made 3s — as the Fever dealt the defending champion New York Liberty their first L of 2025. It hasn't been nearly as clean since then, though. Indiana hits Tuesday with two consecutive losses, while Clark is 1 for her last 17 behind the arc.
Sunday's stumble in Las Vegas must have stung. Aliyah Boston (26 points) and Kelsey Mitchell (20 points) led the way for the Fever, the pair combining to shoot 62.5 percent from the field with just two turnovers. Reigning MVP A'ja Wilson was held to 8-of-21 from the field. It was undone by 16 giveaways (eight from Clark) and a colossal free-throw disparity (21 for Vegas, nine for Indiana).
The Fever now wrap up their bummer of a Pacific Coast cruise against the red-hot, emerald-lit Storm. Behind the starry duo of Ogwumike and Diggins, Seattle has bloomed with a 6-2 record in June. Better still, the Storm have convincingly beaten two juggernauts, East-leading New York and the West-best Minnesota Lynx, by a combined 20 points.
The veteran leads have been buoyed by career years from Gabby Williams and Erica Wheeler. Both are averaging double figures in scoring and shooting better than 41 percent on 3s. All nine members of the rotation had a positive plus-minus in Sunday's win versus the shorthanded Liberty. Downtown Seattle continues to have one of the best crowds in the WNBA, no matter the date or opponent. A national TV look against the ultra-popular Clark will be feverish. Off [They] Go.
Jersey crossovers: Indiana forward Natasha Howard won Defensive Player of the Year with Seattle back in 2019. That same year, current Storm spark plug Erica Wheeler was the All-Star Game MVP in Fever threads.
Mascot mashup: A bad fever is nothing to mess with, but a bad storm can do widespread damage. Both are reasonable excuses for staying home from the summer barbecue.

Mets demote second former top prospect in two days

For the second straight day, the New York Mets have demoted a former top prospect to the minor leagues. The Mets optioned infielder Luisangel Acuna to Triple-A Syracuse on Monday. The younger brother of Atlanta Braves star Ronald Acuna Jr. has started just five times over the last month due to offensive struggles, collecting only 18 at-bats in June. Advertisement Luisangel Acuna was slashing .308/.357/.385 through April with five doubles, but his numbers dropped dramatically in May when he hit .204/.254/.222. June brought more struggles at .167/.211/.167. Overall this season, Acuna carries a .241/.293/.283 line with no home runs and a poor 68 OPS+ — meaning he was 32% worse than the league average hitter. The Mets called up veteran outfielder Travis Jankowski to fill his roster spot. Acuna joins catcher Francisco Alvarez in Syracuse after Alvarez was sent down Sunday before the Mets' series finale against the Philadelphia Phillies. Alvarez has struggled at the plate all season, hitting .236/.319/.333 with just three home runs and 38 strikeouts in 35 games. He fractured the hamate bone in his left hand during spring training and didn't make his season debut until April 25. Advertisement Just two seasons ago, Alvarez hit 25 home runs. The Mets hope to get both players back on track offensively as they are part of the young core the team will need to rely on later this season and potentially in the playoffs. Related Headlines

The Smokies went an even 6-6 on the road the last two weeks. Advertisement The minor league baseball season is divided into two halves. This split-season format is designed to provide more opportunities for teams to contend for a playoff spot. The winner of the first half automatically qualifies for the postseason. The Chattanooga Lookouts finished atop the Southern League standings June 22, with the Smokies in third place. WNBA All-Star: 3 under-the-radar players who should be getting voters' attention

The WNBA announced the top 40 vote-getters in WNBA All-Star fan voting last week and the top five were no surprise: Caitlin Clark, Napheesa Collier, Aliyah Boston, A'ja Wilson and Breanna Stewart. But there are some names who were further down the voting list who still should get a closer look. With All-Star voting ending on Saturday, here are three players who may have flown under the radar but deserve some more attention. Brittney Sykes, Washington Mystics The Washington Mystics are the youngest team in the WNBA this season, but they have been one of the season's biggest surprises, sitting just a half-game outside of playoff position with a 6-8 record. Brittney Sykes, the team's 31-year-old guard, has shown leadership to the two rookies on the team, and ranks eighth in the league in points per game. Her teammates do not question it; 'Slim' is an All-Star. Advertisement 'I've seen the progress from Slim the past three years," Mystics forward Shakira Austin said on June 17, when Sykes scored 32 points to help the Mystics beat the Chicago Sky. "This is the year where she's really putting it together, like both what she can give physically for us, but also mentally, just being that leader." 'I want to add to that, because [I was just] talking with our coaches about that willingness to see the game and understand what was needed,' Washington coach Sydney Johnson said. 'Whether it was turning up her defensive pressure or finding teammates, drawing and kicking out and then that softened up things, that's what All-Stars do.' Still, Sykes was in 28th place in the early returns of All-Star voting with 76,549 votes. Natasha Cloud, New York Liberty Coming off their WNBA championship, the New York Liberty didn't just run back the roster they had. During the offseason, New York acquired Natasha Cloud from the Connecticut Sun, and she's been a key part of the team's success so far. While her scoring numbers aren't huge, her ability to facilitate scoring does show up in the stats: Cloud is ranked third in the league with 6.5 assists per game. Considering she just joined a team full of veterans who are used to playing with each other, she's meshed well. Advertisement 'It's just a really free-flowing offense, and I feel like that helps players like [Cloud], who is just so great at reading and reacting,' her teammate Sabrina Ionescu said in early June. 'And it's just like a player-led offense, and I think that's why she does so well. It's because she's just not put in a box of like, this is the only thing you can do. It's like, go out there and be a basketball player. Read, make the right play for the team, and then you can go out there and score and average 20 [points] a night.' Cloud was ranked 29th in the early returns of All-Star voting, just behind Sykes with 74,280 votes. Kayla McBride, Minnesota Lynx 'This is Mac. This is what she does.' Advertisement Cheryl Reeve wasn't surprised by Kayla McBride erupting for 29 points in 30 minutes in the team's win on Saturday over the Los Angeles Sparks. Playing without superstar Napheesa Collier because of her back injury, someone on the Lynx roster had to step up. McBride has been in Minnesota since 2021, and this is the player she has been for them. She's averaging 16.1 points per game for the Lynx, putting her in the top 20 for the league. But she was 40th among all players in All-Star voting with 44,378 votes. She started the season late for personal reasons, but in the nine games she's played, she's proven her worth to the Lynx. WNBA All-Star starters are chosen by a combination of fan, player and media votes, and fans can vote here or on the WNBA app. Coaches then vote to choose reserve players. The top two vote-getters will be named captains, and the captains will then choose their teams. The All-Star game is on July 19 in Indianapolis.
