CDS General Anil Chauhan warns of evolving warfare driven by AI, Hypersonics at Shangri-La Dialogue
Singapore city [Singapore], June 1 (ANI): General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff of India, participated in the Chiefs of Defence Round Table at the IISS Shangri-La Dialogue.
Global defence leaders, including those from Australia, the European Union, France, Germany, Indonesia, Japan, the Netherlands, New Zealand, the Philippines, Singapore, the UK, and the US, discussed critical security challenges, emerging trends, and innovative solutions in Dialogue.
The talks focused on strategic decision-making, sharing best practices, and fostering cooperation to promote stability and address evolving security concerns in the defence sector.
While addressing the dialogue on 'Defence Innovation Solutions for Future Challenges', General Anil Chauhan, Chief of Defence Staff, highlighted the evolving geopolitical dynamics and rapid technological shifts that were redefining the nature of warfare, underscoring that the democratisation of technology has empowered non-state actors, fueling proxy wars and instability.
CDS emphasised that Future Warfare will be shaped by four trends: the proliferation of sensors across all domains, long-range hypersonic and precision weapons, manned-unmanned teaming with autonomous systems, and the intelligentisation of the battlefield driven by AI, ML, LLMs, and quantum tech.
CDS also outlined the approach to Capability Development through adaptability, innovation, and self-reliance, wherein India has created collaborative defence manufacturing ecosystems with private industry, adopting a 'Tactics-led Modernisation' strategy in developing systems suited to operational needs and local conditions.
He emphasised that the ongoing transformation would include changes to doctrine, organisational culture and human capital, where India's unique geography, experience and aspirations shape its defence outlook.
General Anil Chauhan affirmed India's commitment to global peace & responsible innovation and commended the Shangri-La Dialogue as a critical forum for fostering dialogue and cooperation in the collective pursuit of global stability.
Shangri-La Dialogue is Asia's premier defence and security summit that brings together defence ministers, military chiefs, policy makers and strategic experts across the globe. The event will witness leaders from 40 nations addressing Indo-Pacific Security challenges. The engagements will provide a platform to strengthen defence cooperation, discuss mutual security interests and enhance India's strategic partnerships in the Indo - Pacific region. (ANI)

India, US negotiating trade agreement amid Trump tariff dispute
Representative image (Picture crdit: ANI) NEW DELHI: As an American team touches down in the Capital for negotiating the proposed bilateral trade agreement, government is keeping close tabs on the legal dispute over Trump's tariffs and the concessions being offered by the US administration to other countries given that the talks are focusing on how both countries can get better market access. The Trump administration is seeking to use the 10% baseline tariffs and the suspended reciprocal tariffs (26% in India's case) to negotiate trade deals. The court setback, which was stayed a day later, has injected fresh uncertainty, and the government is keen to ensure that it manages to extract the best deal for Indian companies. 'What we get compared to other countries will be what we will ultimately finalise in the deal,' a government official said. At the same time, India is conscious of the strategic ties with the US and is looking to step up import of shale gas, LNG, and crude oil from America to diversify its import basket, as prices of these items are lower in the US, an official said. This is expected to help bridge the trade gap of over $40 billion in India's favour, a major grudge with Trump, who has been doling out various numbers to justify his tariffs actions. Bengaluru Stampede: A tragic incident unfolded in Bengaluru on Wednesday when a stampede occurred near the Chinnaswamy Stadium as fans had gathered to cheer for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) for winning their first IPL trophy in 18 years. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah stated that such incidents happen in many places and drew a parallel to the Kumbh Mela that was held earlier this year. In the stampede, 11 people lost their lives and 47 were injured. Speaking to the media about the incident, the CM added that the Congress party had criticised the incident that happened during Kumbh Mela 2025, however, the Karnataka government did not. "Deeply shocked by the tragic loss of lives in the stampede during the RCB victory celebrations near Chinnaswamy Stadium. A moment of joy has been eclipsed by sorrow," he posted. "I extend my deepest condolences to the bereaved families and wish a speedy recovery to the injured," Karnataka CM added. He also added that a victory parade for the RCB was not allowed as a precautionary measure; however, a crowd surge near the stadium where the felicitation ceremony was taking place for the team led to the stampede. "Precautionary measures were taken by not allowing a victory parade, but the crowd surge near the stadium led to this tragedy. I urge everyone to always prioritise safety — above excitement, celebration, or crowd fervour," Siddaramaiah wrote. The Prime Minister's Office also posted on X and quoted PM Narendra Modi as saying, "The mishap in Bengaluru is absolutely heartrending. In this tragic hour, my thoughts are with all those who have lost their loved ones. I pray that those who are injured have a speedy recovery." The Deputy CM of Karnataka, speaking to the media, complimented the police and said, " Again I'm telling on record. I should compliment my Police officers... morning also, they wanted to have a procession, they wanted to bring a vehicle from the airport itself... Police guided us not to... that's why I rushed to the airport and ensured nothing went wrong... in Vidhana Soudha, also we were very cautious..." Shivakumar also informed that, for Thursday, except for the cabinet meeting, all programmes have been postponed.
