49ers have intriguing plan for stud defensive lineman in 2025
49ers have intriguing plan for stud defensive lineman in 2025 The San Francisco 49ers are hoping that the changes that they made on the defensive side of the ball, including replacing Nick Sorenson with Robert Saleh as the team's defensive coordinator, gets them out of the basement in the NFC West after a 6-11 campaign. One area that they're expecting much improvement in is their pass rushing, as the 49ers brought down opposing quarterbacks on 6.69% of their dropbacks in 2024, good for 18th in the NFL. The main reason San Francisco is anticipating more success applying pressure is the addition of first-round pick Mykel Williams. The edge rusher brings an ability that should help compliment Nick Bosa and the newly-acquired Bryce Huff. Interestingly, Williams' position coach, Kris Kocurek recently shared that they plan to use the rookie both on the edge and in the interior of their line. "That's one thing at Georgia that he displayed," Kocurek told reporters earlier this week (via The Atheltic's Matt Barrows). "He can get to the passer from the edge and then slide over guards and utilize that skill set, the wiggle, the ability to get on the edges and manipulate guards from the interior. He's just a really versatile player, which is something we've always utilized in the past with guys like Arden Key and Charles Omenihu and Arik Armstead in 2019 and 2020. … The thing we like about Mykel is we've seen it at Georgia. He'll line up 4i, 3-technique, 3-technique on both sides, edge player. So he's done it before, so I don't think the learning curve is quite as steep with him." The 20-year-old was a five-star recruit out of Hardaway High School in Columbus, Georgia, before spending the last three seasons with the Bulldogs. During that time, he appeared in 40 games and recorded 67 tackles (23 for a loss), 14 sacks, four passes defensed, three forced fumbles and one fumble recovery. He also won a national championship in his first season and earned All-SEC honors the last two. As Kocurek mentioned, Williams did play all around Georgia's defensive front. In his 1,184 defensive line snaps with the Bulldogs, 638 (53.9%) were on the edge 408 (34.5%) were over the tackle and 138 (11.7%) were inside. That versality could hep San Francisco get more pass rushers on the field in certain situations, creating more problems for opposing offensive linemen and quarterbacks and hopefully resulting in more sacks and/or turnovers. UNC football coach Bill Belichick gives early thoughts on the transfer quarterback
During the time period this offseason when many fans were evaluating the idea that the UNC football team could sign ex-Tennessee QB Nico Iamaleava, South Alabama transfer QB made himself available and became the Tar Heels' target. Lopez committed to North Carolina and immediately entered a quarterback battle with Max Johnson and freshman Bryce Baker. The 6-foot-0 QB from James Clemens HS in Madison, Alabama, was a three-star prospect out of high school and a three-star prospect, just a two-point differential in rating, according to 247Sports. Advertisement However, Belichick loves the underrated player that he believes can evolve to something better than anyone else believes he is. Now, coach has had time to evaluate that decision and spoke on on what he thought of Lopez. Quoted via Inside Carolina, this is what Belichick had to say when asked about what he thought about Gio Lopez: "Gio was really productive at South Alabama. He's a dual-threat quarterback. He's had plenty of production, yardage, and both running game and passing game experience. Tough kid, played well against some good competition, teams like LSU. So looks like he's definitely ready for this level. And we're excited to work with him, as we are with everybody else." Last season, in Lopez's freshman year at South Alabama, he threw for 2,559 yards and 18 touchdowns with five interceptions. He finished the season with a 150.8 QB rating and a 66% completion percentage. He averaged 8.2 yards per throw on the mid-major squad. Advertisement Lopez will now enter Power 4 territory and could have the opportunity to be the first starting quarterback under the Bill Belichick era. There is still plenty of practice to go between now and the opening kickoff against TCU in September. Projections for five Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round
Projections for five Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round The 2025 MLB draft will take place July 13-14 at Coca-Cola Roxy in Atlanta, Georgia. Liam Doyle, Gavin Kilen, Andrew Fischer, Dean Curley, Marcus Phillips, AJ Russell, Tanner Franklin and Nate Snead are former Vols expected to be drafted in 2025. Eight former Vols were selected in the 2024 MLB draft: Christian Moore (Angels), Blake Burke (Milwaukee), Billy Amick (Minnesota), Dylan Dreiling (Texas), Drew Beam (Kansas City), Kavares Tears (San Diego), A.J. Causey (Kansas City) and Aaron Combs (White Sox). Joe Doyle of Future Stars Series released a mock draft for the first round. Below are 2025 MLB draft projections and excerpts for Tennessee players from Doyle. Liam Doyle Team: Cincinnati Pick: No. 9 '(Jamie) Arnold or Doyle here? Coin toss. Could it be (Ike) Irish instead? What about (Billy) Carlson? The Reds are a tough code to crack. In years past, they've gone for more physical starting pitchers with bigger stuff and better fastballs. For that reason, we'll stick Doyle in the 9-hole.' Gavin Kilen Team: Tampa Bay Pick: No. 14 'Word on the street is Kilen is unlikely to get out of the top 15 picks in the Draft. Teams above this, like the Athletics and White Sox, shouldn't be discounted. The Rays have always seemed to prefer position players, and specifically position players with versatility and well-balanced tools. Kilen could move quickly and has the chops to play a number of positions.' Andrew Fischer Team: Milwaukee Pick: No. 32 More: USA TODAY projects four Tennessee baseball players in 2025 MLB draft first round AJ Russell Team: Boston Pick: No. 33 More: Former Vols by the numbers in 2025 MLB Week 11 Dean Curley Team: Tampa Bay Pick: No. 42 More: Tennessee baseball year-by-year home run totals under Tony Vitello Follow Vols Wire on Facebook and X (formerly Twitter).
