Prepaid autorickshaw counters resume operations at Ernakulam railway stations
Kochi: Prepaid autorickshaw counter system at Ernakulam Town and Junction railway stations, which was dysfunctional for the past two years, has been restored. City police authorities informed that operations of the prepaid counters at both railway stations resumed on Monday. Autorickshaws with QR codes parked in queues at main entrances of Ernakulam Town and Junction stations are used for this service, police said. An electronic point of sale (EPOS) system has been introduced to expedite billing process for passengers. Travellers receive a bill slip that includes details of autorickshaw, fare and a link for them to register complaints, if any. Currently, autorickshaws operating under this prepaid counter system have obtained a licence from Indian railways, police said. Passengers expressed satisfaction over the decision to resume prepaid services. "In the absence of prepaid services, we were forced to depend on other autorickshaws which charge exorbitant rates from us. Now, we hope that rates are judicious. During the last days when prepaid counters were operating, they were charging an additional 20% than the charges fixed," said T N Prathapan, an RTI activist. Separate rates have been allotted for day and night services. This 24-hour service will be implemented under direct supervision of Kochi City West Traffic police. Autorickshaws with a city permit can obtain special licence from railways, while those without a city permit can obtain a temporary special licence by contacting deputy manager at Ernakulam Town railway station at 9567869376.
