Two students suspended, security increased after Malaysian woman found dead at university housing

CNA28-06-2025
CYBERJAYA, Selangor: Following the murder of a 20-year-old Malaysian student, the University of Cyberjaya has suspended two students linked to the case, and stepped up security at off-campus shared accommodation facilities.
The university said in a statement on Saturday (Jun 28) that it had taken "prompt disciplinary action by suspending two students who may be connected to the recent incident involving the late Maniishapriet Kaur Akhara", adding that the suspensions will remain in effect pending further investigation.
Maniishapriet, a physiotherapy student from the University of Cyberjaya, was found dead in her condominium unit in the Sepang district of Selangor on Tuesday at about 10am, with injuries on her body, reported local media.
Three suspects - a man and two women, aged between 19 and 20 - have been arrested and are currently on remand.
The victim had been staying at Mutiara Ville, a shared unit provided by the university located about 1.5km away from the main building, according to Free Malaysia Today (FMT).
She lived with five other students but they had returned home for the holidays on Jun 21, leaving her alone at the condominium used as a hostel as she was scheduled to sit for an upcoming examination, according to The Star.
She was found unconscious by a friend at around 10am on Tuesday and pronounced dead shortly after police officers arrived at the scene.
The University of Cyberjaya has come under intense scrutiny following the tragedy, which has raised concerns about student safety at private institutions of higher learning.
In response, the university says it has implemented security enhancements at off-campus shared accommodation facilities since Thursday evening.
These measures include deploying additional university-assigned security personnel to supplement existing guards appointed by the respective accommodation management companies. Patrols have also been stepped up.
"The safety and well-being of our students and staff remain our utmost priority. We are deeply saddened by the recent events and are taking firm, immediate steps to ensure our community feels protected and supported," said Dr David Whitford, vice chancellor of the university.

LTA arrests 22 drivers offering illegal rides between Singapore-Malaysia

Photo: LTA FB SINGAPORE: A total of 22 drivers suspected of ferrying passengers illegally were caught in surprise enforcement operations carried out by the Land Transport Authority (LTA) at Changi Airport and Gardens by the Bay on Friday (11 July). In a statement posted on Facebook yesterday (12 July), the LTA said the raids were launched following tip-offs from the public and officers found drivers were allegedly operating without licenses to provide e-hailing and chartered transport services. According to the LTA, some of the offenders were not only providing illicit rides within Singapore but were also offering unlicensed cross-border trips to and from Malaysia. Enforcement officers seized the vehicles involved at the scene and have commenced investigations. The LTA reminded that operating any form of point-to-point passenger transport service without the necessary approvals is a serious offence and that such activities undermine the livelihoods of law-abiding drivers as well as compromise passenger safety as they lack proper insurance coverage. The public has been urged to avoid engaging unlicensed drivers, as these rides pose significant risks. Without valid insurance, passengers may have no recourse if accidents occur. Under the law, offenders can face fines of up to $3,000, jail terms of up to six months, or both. Vehicles used in such illegal services may also be confiscated. JB mother accidentally left four-month old baby in locked car; police issue warning after successfully rescuing infant

Photos: Balai Polis Setia Indah FB MALAYSIA: A four-month-old baby was rescued from a locked vehicle this week after the child was accidentally left inside a car parked under the sun in Johor Bahru. According to the local press, the infant's mother had driven to a nearby supermarket to do some shopping. Upon returning to the car, the woman discovered that the vehicle was locked with her baby still strapped inside. Panicked, she immediately sought help and called the police. Two officers from the Crime Prevention Patrol unit at Taman Setia Indah Police Station were dispatched to the scene. They arrived alongside a locksmith to attempt an urgent rescue. The station said in a Facebook post on Friday (11 July), 'Upon arrival at the location, members on duty together with a locksmith took quick action to open the door of the entangled vehicle while waiting for members of the Department of Fire and Rescue Malaysia (JBPM) to arrive.' Photographs released by the station show a visibly distressed young woman, believed to be the mother, clutching her hands to her chest and watching anxiously as the locksmith worked to open the car door. Thanks to the swift intervention, the baby was safely retrieved from the vehicle without injuries. Authorities reported that the child was in stable condition despite having been exposed to heat inside the car. Police have since issued a stern warning to the mother regarding the dangers of leaving a child unattended, even for a brief period. 'Members of the Crime Prevention Patrol of Taman Setia Indah Police Station have given a stern warning to the mother of the infant not to repeat negligence that can endanger life, especially the act of leaving the infant unattended in the vehicle,' the statio said. The authorities also took the opportunity to remind the public about the potentially deadly consequences of such oversights. 'Taman Setia Indah Police Station calls on the public to be always aware and responsible towards children's safety because negligence even in a short period of time can invite big risks,' they added. Loanshark threatens to kill borrower's entire family over S$27 outstanding balance

Photo: Depositphotos/ Seasonpost (for illustration purposes only) MALAYSIA: A 42-year-old man has revealed that a loan shark has threatened to kill his entire family over an outstanding balance of just RM90 (approximately S$27). According to a report by Oriental Daily, the borrower named Xiao (transliterated from Mandarin) said he initially borrowed RM1,500 (S$452) last month to help with cash flow difficulties. But when the money was disbursed, he received only RM1,000 (S$301), as the lender retained RM500 as an upfront fee. Mr Xiao told the Malaysian daily that he diligently repaid the loan together with the interest demanded. Despite having settled what he believed was the full amount owed, he was later informed that he still had an outstanding balance of RM90. To his shock, the lender claimed that under their so-called 'regulations,' he was required to pay an additional 'fine' of RM1,500. Mr Xiao said he did not agree to their demand but the loanshark refused to negotiate and instead threatened to kill his entire family. He described feeling deeply unsettled and fearful for his family's safety. The incident highlights the ruthless tactics employed by illegal moneylenders, who often prey on financially vulnerable individuals and enforce repayment through intimidation and violence. Such cases have been reported across Malaysia in recent years, prompting warnings from authorities and community organisations about the dangers of dealing with unlicensed lenders. Investigations are ongoing.
