Why a New York Rangers forward spends his summers in a Connecticut basement

Brett Berard (via Getty Images) When 22-year-old Brett Berard makes his way downstairs every evening, it's not because he's avoiding the world. The New York Rangers forward is spending his NHL off-season living with the Fiorita family—an unabashedly Rangers-obsessed family that has unofficially claimed him as one of their own. From NHL ice to driveway basketball Brett Berard, signed in 2020, is in the final year of his three-year entry-level agreement. Although his NHL salary will increase shortly, his present two-way contract pays him $80,000 when he skates for the New York Rangers' AHL affiliate, the Hartford Wolf Pack—a far cry from the multimillion-dollar deals fans envision. That's how Rhode Island-born Brett Berard found himself in suburban Connecticut. During summer training with strength coach Ben Prentiss in Stamford, Brett Berard spoke of his intentions to a friend he had grown up with, who just so happened to know the Fioritas. In a matter of days, the situation was arranged. For the Fioritas, whose four kids were raised on Rangers hockey, it was a no-brainer "yes." Missy Fiorita remembers, 'Anyone that could would do this,' Brett Berard says. 'I live all year by myself, so it's kind of a second family away from my family.' Life with the Fioritas Berard fit easily into everyday life. Mornings begin with eggs—sometimes five eggs at once—followed by gym sessions and skating drills. Afternoons can include pool workouts or golf games with Matthew Fiorita, the family club champion. Evenings are for TV viewing, movies, driveway basketball, or competitive Rummikub until Missy instructs him to get some rest. He makes use of the main floor bathroom, showers upstairs as the rest of the household does, and sometimes takes over a sibling's bedroom when weary of hotel life for the season. The basement setup benefits all parties—Berard avoids rent, and the Fioritas enjoy a front-row view of his NHL adventure. But it's not without surprises, such as the evening last summer when Berard returned home cradling his jaw following a skate. His teeth had been displaced by an injury, and by dawn Missy was taking him to an oral surgeon in White Plains. But for now, the basement in Darien is his summer home. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4. Watch Here!

When India pulled out of Asia Cup — And the big story behind it

NEW DELHI: The 2025 Asia Cup will be played in the UAE from September 9 to 28, the Asian Cricket Council confirmed earlier this month, ending weeks of uncertainty over India's participation. Doubts arose after India–Pakistan relations hit a fresh low, triggering calls to boycott Pakistan at global sporting events. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! Silence from the BCCI kept broadcasters, sponsors, and fans on edge before the board finally confirmed that the defending champions will compete. Poll Do you think India should prioritize national security over participating in international sporting events? Yes, always No, sports should be separate It depends on the situation When India skipped the Asia Cup India's absence from the 1986 Asia Cup remains the only time the Men in Blue have missed the continental tournament. The decision came just two years after they lifted the trophy in the inaugural 1984 edition. India skipper Harmanpreet Kaur under pressure ahead of ICC Women's ODI World Cup 2025? That year's event was scheduled in Sri Lanka but was overshadowed by the country's escalating civil war, which had broken out in 1983 between the government and the separatist Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE). Concerned for player safety, the Indian government instructed the BCCI to withdraw the team, making it a politically sensitive move given India's delicate regional diplomacy over the conflict. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! The 1986 decision remains a rare example of India skipping a major multi-nation cricket event, underscoring the priority given to national security over sporting obligations. 2025 Asia Cup edition at a neutral venue The upcoming Asia Cup will follow the T20I format and feature eight teams: Afghanistan, Bangladesh, India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, UAE, Oman, and Hong Kong. India is in Group A with Pakistan, UAE, and Oman, while Group B includes Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, and Hong Kong. Although India is the formal host, a neutral venue arrangement with the PCB ensures that Indo-Pak fixtures over the next three years are staged at third-party venues. Dubai will host 11 matches, including India's opener against the UAE on September 10 and the high-profile clash with Pakistan on September 14. Abu Dhabi will stage eight games, including India's final group match against Oman on September 19. The Super 4 stage runs from September 20 to 26, with the final set for September 28 in Dubai. If both sides progress, India and Pakistan could face each other up to three times — in the group stage, the Super 4, and potentially in the title clash — ensuring the cricketing rivalry stays in sharp focus despite the political tensions surrounding it.
