Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight makes its South African debut

Time Out15 hours ago
Joburg film lovers, clear your calendars for 25 July. Don't Let's Go to the Dogs Tonight, the moving new adaptation of Alexandra Fuller's best-selling memoir, is finally getting its South African premiere.
Directed by South African-born actor and filmmaker Embeth Davidtz, this is a story rooted deeply in African soil. Shot in South Africa and adapted for the screen by Davidtz herself, the film offers a rare and emotionally layered portrayal of Zimbabwe's transition from colonial Rhodesia to independence. At the heart of it all is eight-year-old Bobo, played by newcomer Lexi Venter, a young white girl navigating a childhood shaped by grief, shifting family dynamics, and a land at war.
The story unfolds through Bobo's eyes, bringing tenderness, innocence, and emotional truth to a time often only seen through historical or political lenses. 'Even in the middle of pain and inherited racism, love and transformation are actually possible,' says Davidtz, who also stars in the film. 'This story helped me process my own childhood in apartheid-era South Africa.'

With a stellar local cast that includes Zikhona Bali, Fumani N Shilubana, and Rob Van Vuuren, the film is both intimate and expansive, telling a personal tale against a backdrop of war and cultural upheaval. Behind the scenes, a powerhouse production team backs the film, including executive producers Anele Mdoda, Frankie Du Toit, and Trevor Noah, and acclaimed producers Helena Spring and Paul Buys.
Following its world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, the film now comes home, offering South African audiences a chance to witness this poignant coming-of-age story where memory, identity, and healing are front and centre.

Felix Baumgartner reportedly suffered mid-air heart attack before paraglider crash

The daredevil known for jumping from the edge of space is thought to have died after suffering a cardiac arrest Austrian daredevil Felix Baumgartner, famed for his 2012 jump from the edge of space, is believed to have tragically died following a mid-air cardiac arrest while paragliding in Italy. ‌ The 56-year-old sportsman passed away around 4pm on Thursday, July 17, with local reports indicating his craft landed in a swimming pool at a holiday resort in Porto Sant'Elpidio, Fermo, injuring a hotel employee on the ground. ‌ It's understood that Felix reported feeling unwell while airborne, subsequently losing control of his paraglider. The woman struck by his paraglider was swiftly taken to hospital, but her condition is not considered serious. ‌ According to Repubblica, the swimming pool was bustling with children at the time of the incident, who were sadly witness to the sports star's untimely death. Italian local media suggest Baumgartner suffered a cardiac arrest mid-flight, as reported by MailOnline. ‌ Baumgartner had launched from Fermo, but lost control of the powered hang glider while flying over the coast, for reasons yet to be determined. Following the crash, he lost consciousness and went into cardiac arrest, reports the Mirror. Emergency services called for an air ambulance to transport him to Torrette Hospital in Ancona, but Felix was declared dead at the scene. Just hours prior to the tragic incident, Felix shared footage on his Instagram account depicting him paragliding in loops above a meadow, completely oblivious to the devastating events that would soon unfold. ‌ He had also uploaded an image of an airstrip accompanied by the words: "Too much wind." Felix Baumgartner gained worldwide recognition in 2012 following his successful record-shattering leap from the stratosphere at an altitude of 24 miles (128,100ft). His remarkable descent from the 'brink of space' whilst wearing a pressure suit took approximately 10 minutes, making him the first person to surpass the sound barrier during free fall. ‌ However, his extraordinary journey began much earlier, after he took up skydiving at merely 16 years of age. From 1988, he forged a partnership with Red Bull, and throughout the 1990s, he ventured into base jumping, establishing numerous records including 14 world achievements. By 2003, he had also claimed the distinction of being the first person to soar across the English Channel wearing a wingsuit. ‌ The town's mayor, Massimiliano Ciarpella, announced Baumgartner's passing via social media, stating: "Our community is deeply affected by the tragic disappearance of Felix Baumgartner, a figure of global prominence, a symbol of courage and passion for extreme flight." Heartbreakingly, mere days beforehand, Felix had posted a photograph taken almost precisely above the location where he perished in his motorised paraglider. Join the Daily Record WhatsApp community! Felix Baumgartner achieved global recognition in 2012 when he successfully executed a record-breaking jump from the stratosphere, a staggering height of 24 miles. His descent from the 'edge of space' spanned approximately 10 minutes. The Stratos jump was sponsored by Red Bull, and became the centrepiece of a significant advertising campaign by the energy drink company.

Giovanni Pernice shows off body transformation after Strictly Come Dancing exit

Giovanni Pernice has been getting himself back in shape after leaving Strictly Come Dancing and the pro dancer has transformed his body in just five weeks Giovanni Pernice has shown off the impressive results of his body transformation a year after leaving Strictly Come Dancing. The pro dancer is no stranger to keeping himself in shape, but looked incredible in new photos he posted on Instagram. ‌ The 34-year-old shared 'before and after' shots of his torso in the same pair of mulberry coloured trousers, which he says were taken just five weeks apart. "5 weeks in," Gio said as showcased his new six-pack and toned biceps. ‌ Celeb pals like Gemma Atkinson, who is engaged to Gio's Strictly pal Gorka Marquez, were quick to comment underneath. The actress and radio host, who is also into her fitness and regularly posts updates for her 2.1 million followers, simply posted five clapping hands emojis. ‌ While actress and TV presenter Bianca Guaccero, who Gio was partnered and won the Italian version of Strictly with, posted: "Strength and determination! Good job my love!!!" Fans also showed their support with one writing: "Looking good Gio X." Another fan joked: "Well done Gio but you would look gorgeous even with a paper bag on your head!" A third commented: "Well done you - hard work and consistency pays off, and the mindset of a champ." A fourth encouraged: "Keep up the great work." A fifth said: "Didn't think you could improve on perfection, but Wow Gio!" While another flirty fan added: "You're very cuddly either way Gio!" ‌ Italian dancer Gio quit Strictly last summer after nine years on the BBC show. It came after he faced allegations over his tough training methods from previous celebrity partners, including actress Amanda Abbington. At the time he said he was 'surprised as his fans' after finding himself at the centre of 'abuse' claims. Amanda, 51, quit last year's Strictly series citing medical reasons. But she later went on to claim she suffered post traumatic stress disorder following her time on the show and that Gio had been "unnecessary, abusive, cruel and mean." In a statement last year, Gio said vowed to 'clear his name' and told fans: "Those who have followed my journey on Strictly Come Dancing over the last decade will know that I am passionate and competitive. ‌ "No-one is more ambitious for my dance partners than me. I have always striven to help them be the very best dancers they can be. This has always come from a place of love and wanting to win - for me and my dance partners. Thank you all once again for your continued love and support! Giovanni." BBC bosses launched an investigation into 17 claims made by Amanda. Of those, six were upheld relating to verbal bullying and harassment. But the most serious allegations of physical aggression were dismissed. In light of the investigation being completed, the BBC said: "We have assessed the complaints and we have upheld some, but not all, of the complaints made. We want to apologise to Amanda Abbington and to thank her for coming forward and taking part. We know this would not have been an easy thing to do." Gio is now trying to move on from the scandal, but has continued to perform in his own live shows. Speaking out about his 'dark year', he exclusively told the Sunday Mirror: "Sorry for my language but 2024 can f**k off. I've been looking forward to seeing the back of it." He added: "I'm not going to lie, there were dark moments in terms of, you know, this is finished, this is the end of my career. That was one of my down moments."
