Raipur: Two cricketers from Chhattisgarh, Sanjeet Desai and Ayush Pandey, have been selected to represent Central Zone in the upcoming multi-day Duleep Trophy. The tournament, considered a gateway to the national team, will begin on Aug 28.
Five teams will compete in the tournament: Central Zone, North Zone, South Zone, East Zone, and West Zone. Sanjeet Desai, a right-handed middle-order batter, and Ayush Pandey, a left-handed opening batsman, are part of the 15-member Central Zone squad. The team will be led by wicketkeeper-batsman Dhruv Jurel, who recently played for India in the five-match Test series against England.
The Chhattisgarh cricketers will play alongside experienced players like Kuldeep Yadav, Khaleel Ahmed, and Deepak Chahar.
Both batters had a strong 2024-25 Ranji Trophy season, which is being considered a key factor in their selection. Sanjeet Desai was the fifth-highest run-scorer in the league stage, with 693 runs from 11 innings in seven matches at an average of 77. Ayush Pandey scored 743 runs from 12 innings in seven matches in the same season.
Previously, Harpreet Singh Bhatia, Amandeep Khare, Pankaj Rao, and Ashutosh Singh from the state have played in the tournament.

Mohammed Siraj Celebrates Raksha Bandhan With Asha Bhosle's Granddaughter Zanai Bhosle. Video Viral

The spirit of Raksha Bandhan was felt strongly in the cricketing fraternity, as several Indian stars took to social media to share their special moments with their sisters. From playful banter to heartfelt wishes, the posts reflected the unique bond that defines the festival. Amidst all that, a video of India pacer Mohammed Siraj celebrating the festival with Asha Bhosle's granddaughter Zanai Bhosle is going viral on social media. In the heartfelt video, Zanai ties Rakhi on the hand of Siraj. The video was shared by Zanai in collaboration with Siraj. "Happy Rakhi. Couldn't have asked for better," she captioned the post. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Zanai Bhosle💜 (@zanaibhosle) Initially there were speculations on social media that Siraj and Zanai were dating each other. However, the duo clarified their bond by terming it a brother-sister relationship. The England tour marked one of Siraj's finest outings in Test cricket, topping the wicket-charts with 23 wickets and running throughout the series like a warrior for over 185 overs, undeterred, never tired. While the pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah played only three Tests owing to his workload management, it was Siraj who unleashed his 'Miyan Magic' when his beloved 'Jassi Bhai' needed some rest. Notably, Siraj was the only bowler from India and just the second in the series to play all the five Tests. Following his exceptional performance in The Oval Test, Siraj gained his career-best ratings of 674 points, in the ICC Men's Test Bowler Rankings on Wednesday. Player of the Match in the fifth Test, Siraj climbed 12 places to grab 15th spot in the latest ICC Men's Test Bowler Rankings. This is Siraj's highest ever position in the Test ranking, after churning out match-winning spells in the final Test against England. (With agency inputs)

'So what? I'll drop you...': Gautam Gambhir's '21 ducks' chat stumped Sanju Samson moments after he was 'feeling down'

Sanju Samson is a bona fide talent. Hence, it left everyone surprised when the right-handed batter failed to string consistent performances and make himself a regular member of India's white-ball squads. It took the arrival of Gautam Gambhir as the head coach for Sanju Samson to get a fair run in the T20I side. With Gambhir becoming the coach and Suryakumar Yadav taking over as the captain, Samson got the chance to open the batting in the shortest format alongside Abhishek Sharma. Sanju Samson reveals how Gautam Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav gave him confidence(PTI) This move did not pay off immediately in the series against Sri Lanka. However, the wicketkeeper-batter came in his own in the subsequent contests against Bangladesh and South Africa, smashing three centuries. In a candid chat with Ravichandran Ashwin on the latter's YouTube channel, Samson opened up about feeling low after registering poor scores against Sri Lanka. He then further spoke about Gautam Gambhir instilling belief in him and how it led to getting the best out of him. Samson, currently the captain of the Rajasthan Royals in the Indian Premier League (IPL), also revealed his chat with Suryakumar Yadav about his inclusion in the T20I squad. 'So, suddenly, the change happened after the T20 World Cup. So Gautam bhai came in, and Surya came in as the captain. I was playing a Duleep Trophy game in Andhra. Surya was playing for the other team. He told me, 'There is a good opportunity coming up for you. We have seven games lined up, and I am going to give you all seven games as an opener',' said Samson. 'The words coming out from the captain's mouth itself actually felt, Oh wow, great. I played two games in Sri Lanka but was unable to score runs. I was a bit down in the dressing room, and Gautam bhai came up to me and asked what had happened,' he added. It was then that Gambhir's words left Samson shocked and surprised. The India head coach told him that the right-handed batter would get a fair chance and would only be dropped if he registered 21 ducks. He said, 'So what? I'll drop you if you register 21 ducks'. That's the word which he used,' said Samson. 'That kind of confidence from the captain and the coach has definitely raised my confidence. That really helped me to go out there and perform,' he added. Samson's record in T20Is Samson has played 42 T20Is for India so far, scoring 861 runs at an average of 25.32 and a strike rate of 152.38. He has three centuries and two fifties to his name in international T20Is. His maiden T20I century against Bangladesh in Hyderabad, and he then smashed two more tons against South Africa. Speaking to Ashwin, Sanju Samson was candid enough to accept that being in and out of the team did leave him a bit frustrated, but it all changed post the arrival of Gambhir and Suryakumar Yadav. 'I know this thing, being on and off from the team and all those things were happening for a very long period of time, so honestly, I feel like it was not easy, and I think it was definitely not easy to have those kinds of feelings,' said Samson. 'Like I almost completed eight to nine years of my international career, but I only played 15 games or something. I always tried to keep myself in a very positive frame of mind. I always kept on telling myself, 'Okay, it will happen, but different people have different journeys. Yours is a different journey'," he added.

Sanju Samson recalls Gautam Gambhir's warning: 'I'll remove you from team only if ... '

Sanju Samson and Gautam Gambhir (X) Sanju Samson 's cricketing story has always been about quiet grit meeting the right people at the right moments. He still remembers the day in Andhra during a Duleep Trophy game when Suryakumar Yadav walked up to him with a promise – there were seven matches lined up, and Samson would open in all of them. Speaking to R Ashwin on his YouTube channel, Samson recalled how, for a batter, that sort of assurance from the captain meant the world. The start, though, was far from ideal. On a tour of Sri Lanka, he bagged ducks in both his first two games. The weight of missed opportunities began to creep in, until Gautam Gambhir – 'Gauti bhai' to him – cut through the gloom. Gambhir asked what was wrong, heard the self-critical reply, and responded with a line Samson has never forgotten: 'I'll remove you from the team only if you score 21 ducks.' In 2024, Samson finally delivered on the big stage, producing three T20I centuries in just five matches – one against Bangladesh at home and two against South Africa away – a record unmatched by any batter in a single calendar year. It was a season that justified the belief shown by his mentors. Yet even as his international stock soars, his IPL future is shrouded in uncertainty. Samson's relationship with Rajasthan Royals , the franchise he has led and represented since 2013 (barring the suspension years), has soured. Poll Which team do you think would benefit the most from signing Sanju Samson? Chennai Super Kings Mumbai Indians Delhi Capitals Kolkata Knight Riders According to reports serious differences have emerged, leading the skipper to formally request a trade or release. Those close to him say he wants out, but under IPL rules, only the franchise can decide his fate. RR are exploring options, but a player of his calibre – valued at ₹18 crore – is not easy to move. Multiple teams, including Chennai Super Kings , have shown interest, yet no deal has come close. For now, the Royals hold the cards, but the bigger question looms: can a team truly thrive when its captain no longer wishes to be there? The coming weeks may define not just Samson's IPL chapter, but also a franchise's willingness to let go of one of its brightest stars. Catch Rani Rampal's inspiring story on Game On, Episode 4.
