Netflix raises monthly cost for Australian users

Netflix has raised its membership prices once more.
Account holders on Netflix's two standard plans will now be slogged an extra $2 per month, with the cheapest Netflix option, 'Standard with ads,' rising from $7.99 to $9.99 per month.
The standard, ad-free plan will rise from $18.99 to $20.99 per month.
Netflix's premium plan will see the steepest increase, up $3 per month from $25.99 to $28.99.
There's also been a $1 price hike across the board to add an extra member to any of the plans.
Netflix last increased its prices in May 2024 – before that, the premium plan was $22.99, meaning users on this plan have seen a 26 per cent price increase over the past 15 months.
Tech website Tom's Guide reports that back when Netflix first launched in Australia, the monthly cost for a 'basic' (ad-free) subscription was $8.99. The streamer's premium plan was just $14.99 when it launched, compared to $28.99 today.
In recent years, Netflix has focused efforts on cracking down on password sharing between households.
Netflix started sending out emails in May of 2023 to Australian users who were sharing their Netflix account with people outside their household.
'Your Netflix account is for you and the people you live with – your household,' the streamer warned at the time.
In other Netflix news, news.com.au royal reporter Bronte Coy revealed overnight that Prince Harry and wife Meghan are 'over the moon' to have inked a new deal with the streamer, which comes amid a challenging period for Harry.
The couple confirmed their 'first-look' deal on Monday, which – unlike their previous multimillion-dollar, exclusive agreement – gives the streaming giant the opportunity to view and potentially buy any future productions before they are shopped around to other studios.
It's understood to be worth significantly less than the contract Harry and Meghan signed back in 2020 – but a source close to the couple told news.com.au that they were 'thrilled' with the new arrangement.
'Where Netflix was five years ago is a very different place to where it is today. Obviously, five years ago there was the pandemic and the way they operated as a business was different – they paid people for exclusivity,' the insider pointed out.
'Now the landscape has changed so [Harry and Meghan] are thrilled to have been signed on for another deal.'

Meghan Markle fans outraged over ‘bully' Chrissy Teigen's guest appearance in Netflix show

They're royally pissed. Meghan Markle fans are outraged over 'bully' Chrissy Teigen's appearance in season two of the actress's Netflix show, With Love, Meghan. After the model was shown in the trailer of the Duchess of Sussex's new lifestyle series on Wednesday, several users took to social media to share their disdain with Teigen being in the clip. 'Netflix releases the trailer for Meghan Markle's Second Season 'With Love, Meghan' to air on August 26th. My take away, no celebrities except bully Chrissy Tiegen [sic]! No Serena, Oprah, Beyonce or even Astronaut Gayle King,' claimed one user on X. 'Meghan Markle and @Netflix in MAJOR PROBLEM WITH CHRISSY TEIGEN and Teigen's #cyber-bullying, causing a child to want to leave her body,' another person tweeted, referring to Teigen's 2011 tweet, in which the TV host wrote that it was her 'dream' for then-teen Courtney Stodden to take a 'dirt nap'. 'Meghan Markle hanging out with Chrissy Teigen makes absolute sense to me,' tweeted a third. 'How can Meghan Markle associate with Chrissy Teigan [sic], a self confessed online bully and troll when she purports to support the Parents Network who are campaigning against this very thing?' said a fourth netizen. Page Six has reached out to Teigen's rep for comment but did not immediately hear back. Markle's reps declined to comment. In the With Love, Meghan season two trailer, Teigen, 39, and Markle, 44, appeared to be making a craft together. 'Oh my gosh, I could do this every day,' the former Lip Sync Battle host, who first met Markle while working on Deal or No Deal, said. 'Little things like this make me so happy,' she added in a later part of the clip. Teigen has faced several controversies over the years. Aside from the shocking messages the former FABLife star sent Stodden, she also mocked Lindsay Lohan, who has admitted to cutting herself in the past. 'Lindsay adds a few more slits to her wrists when she sees Emma Stone,' Teigen tweeted in 2011. publicly called Teen Mom star Farrah Abraham 'a wh**e'. In 2021, the former Sports Illustrated Swimsuit Issue model posted a lengthy apology to Stodden, 30, saying she was 'mortified and sad at who I used to be.' 'I was an insecure, attention seeking troll. I am ashamed and completely embarrassed at my behaviour but that … is nothing compared to how I made Courtney feel,' Teigen added.

Taylor Swift faces backlash over Travis Kelce podcast album announcement

Taylor Swift's appearance on the New Heights podcast may just be the pop culture moment to knock the infamous Coldplay kiss cam cheating scandal from top spot in 2025. However, many people have kicked off about the fact that the 35-year-old musician has decided to go on her 'boyfriend's sports podcast' to promote The Life Of A Showgirl. Hannah Ferguson, who runs Cheek Media Co was one of these naysayers, writing, 'Yes, I will be the first listener but imagine being one of the most successful women in the world and announcing your next huge career milestone on your boyfriend's sport podcast.' Ms Ferguson wasn't alone in that sentiment. TikTok user @guiltyassina said: 'wdym I have to watch A MEN'S PODCAST for a possible T12 announcement'. Reddit users also weighed in. 'Going on her boyfriend's podcast to announce her next album/music is not what I pictured her doing but she's down real bad,' one said. Another added: 'Did she really announce an album on her boyfriend's podcast to his brother? Girl. Come on.' Others made comments on her dating history, while some even accused Travis Kelce of 'hijacking' her album announcement. 'Her personality morphs depending on who she's dating. Using her meathead boyfriend's football podcast to drop her next album is giving co-dependence,' one said. Another fan wrote: 'Letting your boyfriend hijack your album announcement like he has a part in its creation is a choice.' 'She's not going to announce a new album on a mediocre, male centred podcast,' one weighed in. Meanwhile, others focused on the fact that Kansas City Chief's player was involved in the major announcement at all. 'I just don't understand why he's involved,' one questioned. Another added: 'Literally why would a man be there?' Comedian Emma Hunter, appearing on Canadian lifestyle show The Social, said; 'I live in fear of the moment the boyfriend starts to step into the light of the main character of the show. 'Taylor Swift has built this entire thing by herself since so small. And of a sudden, we are announcing the 12th album and she does it on the boyfriend's podcast. 'And I just get the fear of the husband-ger, the boyfriend-ger being like, 'Hey, I'm just in the frame here. I'm a part of this. 'I want her to be on her path, on her journey, he can throw his little ball or do whatever he does. 'I don't want him in her light — that was my only thing. I was like, 'This is great, but why this way?'.' And to this sentiment, I can't help but think, God forbid a woman want to share a huge achievement with the man that she loves. It's like people don't want the woman to be happy so she can keep writing songs about heartbreak that resonate with millions. And look, I get it. We're always worried about women in the spotlight being overshadowed by the person they love. But I think The Eras tour has proven that it might be essentially impossible to overshadow her — especially when Kelce may be her biggest cheerleader. Since 2008, when Love Story first hit the airwaves, Swift has been under a microscope. People have wanted to know who she's dating, and why and if they are good enough for her, why she writes albums about love and heartbreak, what she's doing, and for her to comment on every single thing that is wrong in the world. For close to two decades, people have wanted to know every single detail about her life — and have loved to scrutinise her for it. After her last relationship with Joe Alwyn, and the couple rarely being seen in the spotlight together, the I Can Do It With A Broken Heart hit maker has what appears to be taking the complete opposite approach with the younger Kelce. The pair have been seen at parties, out to dinner, attending weddings, at The Eras Tour and the Superbowl together. Both have been incredibly supportive of each other's careers. Kelce has bragged to the high heavens about how much of a bad ass he thinks his girlfriend is. So, why is it so hard to understand why Swift, who has had every decision twisted, would appear on New Heights to speak about her new album? Many assume it's because she might have some semblance of control over how the episode is cut. And yeah, if you'd been criticised your whole life it would be extremely appealing. Others thought it may be because Swift, a cultural phenomenon with a fanbase of 'Swifties' unlike anything we've seen before, wanted to appear more human and relatable by giving some insight into her relationship. Some even claimed it was a targeted attempt to annoy men, by 'taking away' something they enjoy. At the end of the day, it shouldn't matter the reason why Swift has made this choice. It's been made. Swift should be able to include the people she loves in her milestones — particularly a man who realises he has been chosen by the myth and legend that is Taylor Swift. She is happy, and in love, and sharing milestones always makes them that much more enjoyable. And yes, while there has been negativity, there has also been a lot of excitement about the impending podcast drop. 'She gets to do an album rollout with an interview that she knows isn't a trap, that won't be edited in a way that she hates,' one said. 'And she's doing it with her grinning man by her side throwing shiny confetti on himself. I am so happy for her.' One said: 'I was thinking about that yesterday, she is definitely comfortable with them in a way that she will actually going to a podcast where she is actually going to enjoy and feel a little bit more normal and relaxed!!! I'm happy she is finally getting a little taste of normality.' 'This is what it feels like to climb the mountain with someone by your side. So incredibly happy for her,' one added. Another social media user commented: 'He was SO GIDDY about it too that man is so proud of her.' Overall, Swift is just doing her best to promote The Life Of A Showgirl in her own way — with an adoring man by her side — and can any of us really fault her for that?

Taylor Swift's cheeky jab to critics in new interview alongside boyfriend Travis Kelce

Taylor Swift has taken a cheeky swipe at her critics just one day after the announcement of her twelfth studio album sent fans into meltdown. In a brief new promo for her highly-anticipated appearance on boyfriend Travis Kelce's podcast, New Heights – which he co-hosts with his brother, Jason – Swift referenced backlash over all the attention her presence at his NFL games had attracted throughout their relationship. 'Thanks for having me on my favourite podcast,' Swift, 35, told the siblings. She then joked: 'As we all know, you guys have a lot of male sports fans that listen to your podcast, and I think we all know that if there's one thing that male sports fans want to see in their spaces and on their screens … it's more of me.' Earlier, Jason had provided a breathless, enthusiastic introduction for Swift, describing her as 'the most-awarded artist in the history of the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, and iHeart Radio Music Awards', pointing out she'd won 14 Grammys. 'She is the only artist in the history to an album of the year. Last December, she wrapped up the Eras Tour, which spanned 149 shows across 51 cities, five continents. It was the most-attended tour of all time. Of all time! ' … Are you ready for it? Making your podcast debut, the most expensive guest in the history of shows – Taylor Swift!' The singer was seen stifling giggles throughout the monologue, telling him at the end: 'That intro Jason, oh my God … His soul has left his body. That was so good, that was so sweet.' The latest promo comes after Swift once again sent fans into a frenzy, re-emerging after months under the radar to reveal she's about to release her twelfth studio album: The Life of a Showgirl. The singer popped up in the first teaser for her boyfriend's podcast, in which the couple appeared alongside each other and engaged in some flirty banter about how well they 'match' before dropping the big news. 'So I wanted to show you something … This is my brand new album, The Life of a Showgirl,' Swift said as she held up the album, with Kelce adding, 'TS12!' The full podcast episode will drop early Thursday morning, Australian time. On Tuesday, Kelce also offered a rare glimpse into his romance with Swift, telling GQ magazine about how they fell in love. 'Whenever I'm with her, it feels like we're just regular people,' Kelce, who plays for the Kansas City Chiefs, explained. 'When there is not a camera on us, we're just two people that are in love. 'It can be perceived as something else because of how much it is talked about, and how much we are tracked whenever we do go out. 'But I would say that it's as normal of … it happened very organically, even though from a media standpoint it was being tracked. It still happened very organically.' Kelce added that he and Swift, both 35, 'fell in love just based off the people we were sitting in a room together with.' 'We are two fun-loving people who have the morals to appreciate everyone for who they are. We share all those values. It kind of just took the f**k off.' The pair first unveiled their romance in September 2023 when Swift was spotted cheering her three-time Super Bowl-winning boyfriend on during a home game. Kelce and Swift went on to make several loved-up public appearances over the months that followed, with the athlete even popping up on stage in a cameo during his girlfriend's sold-out Eras Tour last year. According to Kelce, their mutual support and respect for each other's work has brought them even closer together. 'I hadn't experienced somebody in the same shoes as me, having a partner who understands the scrutiny, understands the ups and downs of being in front of millions,' he explained to GQ. 'That was very relatable, seeing how exhausted she would get after shows. She may not think of herself as an athlete. She will never tell anyone that she is an athlete. But I've seen what she goes through.
