Ludhiana bypoll litmus test for AAP in Punjab, says BJP leader Tarun Chugh
BJP national General Secretary Tarun Chugh said on Sunday that Punjab is facing a debt of over Rs 4 lakh crore, while campaigning for Jeewan Gupta, the BJP candidate for the June 19 Ludhiana (West) bypoll. He also gave a call to expose the theatrical actions of the AAP government in Punjab.
Speaking to the media, Chugh said the bypoll is a litmus test for Punjab, which is currently suffering under AAP's chaotic and directionless governance. 'Punjab is facing a grave law and order crisis and due to complete financial mismanagement, the state is reeling under a debt of more than Rs 4 lakh crore,' Chugh said.
He added that Ludhiana, once hailed as the industrial capital of India, is now battling a lack of basic infrastructure, a surge in organised crime, and rampant drug abuse. Investors are fleeing to other states, while the youth of Punjab feel betrayed by AAP's empty promises of jobs and prosperity.
Chugh hit out at Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, calling him a puppet in the hands of Arvind Kejriwal. He said, 'Just like the people of Delhi rejected Kejriwal, the people of Punjab will do the same to Bhagwant Mann in 2027.' BJP candidate Jeewan Gupta, while thanking the party leadership for entrusting him with this opportunity, said he is hopeful and determined. He said the business community in Punjab is particularly suffering under the Mann regime due to the absence of a clear, consistent industrial policy.
He assured that with public support, he will raise every voice that AAP has silenced in Punjab.
The bypoll for the Ludhiana (West) Assembly was necessitated by the demise of Gurpreet Gogi Bassi, who sustained a gunshot wound to his head at his house in January. The election will be held on June 17, with the counting of ballots on June 23 along with four other Assembly seats -- two in Gujarat and one each in Kerala and West Bengal.
The state Aam Aadmi Party in February announced Rajya Sabha MP Sanjeev Arora as its candidate for the by-election, while the main Opposition Congress has fielded former Minister Bharat Bhushan Ashu, who is being accused in a multi-crore foodgrain transportation and labour cartage tender scam.
The Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) has nominated Parupkar Singh Ghuman for the bypoll.
By fielding the sitting MP, speculations in political circles are rife that AAP convener Arvind Kejriwal, who's active in the state politics after facing humiliating defeat not only of his party but his bastion in Delhi Assembly elections, is going to the Rajya Sabha in his place in case Arora wins the bypoll. However, the party has so far denied that Kejriwal is moving to the Rajya Sabha.
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) in October 2024 carried out a raid at the residence of AAP candidate Arora in Ludhiana as part of a money laundering probe linked to a land 'fraud' case. The raid was in connection with a chunk of land that was allotted to Ritesh Properties and Industries Limited, one of the companies owned by Arora, by the state government for an industrial project, but it was used for a residential project.
In the 2022 Assembly elections, AAP's legislator Gogi, who joined the party in the run-up to the polls, defeated two-time legislator Bharat Bhushan Ashu in Ludhiana (West), a traditional Congress stronghold urban seat.

"Time for Party to prepare": BJP chief JP Nadda charts roadmap in Himachal ahead of Panchayat polls
Solan (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Union Minister and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) President JP Nadda on Monday chaired a key core group meeting of the party in Himachal Pradesh's Solan, and instructed the state unit to start preparing for the upcoming Panchayat elections. During his visit, Nadda also participated in a Tiranga Yatra, where he congratulated Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the armed forces for Operation Sindoor. In his address during the core group meeting, Nadda instructed the state BJP to launch a series of outreach programmes over the next two and a half months from June 5 to August 15 coinciding with the 11th anniversary of the Modi government. These events, he emphasised, should highlight the achievements of the Centre and energise party cadres across Himachal Pradesh. The State spokesperson and BJP MLA Randheer Sharma elaborated on the upcoming programme, saying, 'from Sankalp to Siddhi, We'll Take 11 Years of Modi's Work to the people.' 'The main agenda of today's core group meeting was to prepare for the campaigns around the 11-year milestone of the Modi government, which has undoubtedly been historic. Under the slogan 'Sankalp se Siddhi Tak', we will reach out to the public with the government's achievements,' he added. Sharma also outlined specific events being planned. CM Sukhu inaugurates newly established SDPO office at Nadaun
Shimla (Himachal Pradesh) [India], June 3 (ANI): Himachal Pradesh Chief Minister Sukhvinder Singh Sukhu on Monday inaugurated the newly established office of the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) at Nadaun, aiming to strengthen the law and order infrastructure in the region. The SDPO office will oversee operations at Police Station Nadaun and Police Station Sujanpur, improving coordination, efficiency, and supervision of law enforcement activities. Covering a jurisdiction of 82 Gram Panchayats and one Nagar Panchayat (NAC), the new office is expected to enhance policing, ensure faster response times, and provide better administrative oversight. In addition, the Chief Minister also inaugurated the newly constructed 'Rajasva Sadan' at Nadaun, built at a cost of Rs 18.50 lakh, and dedicated the Panchayat Ghar in Kalur, constructed at a cost of Rs 1.14 crore. While addressing a gathering in Kalur, the Chief Minister said that when the construction of the Panchayat Ghar started, he was an MLA at that time and was happy to inaugurate it today. He announced that the liquor shop in Kalur will be shifted back to its previous location. He stated that ever since the state government has reinstated the Old Pension Scheme (OPS), the state has been facing financial restrictions from the Union government. 'As a result, Rs 1,600 crore as financial assistance to Himachal Pradesh has been curtailed by the Union Government,' he said. The Chief Minister further announced that the Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding School in Amlehar will commence from the next academic session. This will be the first CBSE-affiliated Rajiv Gandhi Day-Boarding School in the state. Along with quality education, the state government will also ensure nutritious meals in this school and in the coming years, around one thousand students are expected to enrol in this institution. He added that the state government has fixed a minimum support price of Rs 90 per kilogram for naturally grown raw turmeric, Rs 40 per kilogram for maize, and Rs 60 per kilogram for wheat. He also said that improvements in the state's healthcare services are underway and the medical college and a cancer hospital would soon be operational in Hamirpur. CM Sukhu also inspected the ongoing construction of a state-of-the-art Multipurpose Sports Complex at Kharidi in the Nadaun area. Being developed at a cost of Rs 65 crore, the facility is set to become a major hub for sports and youth engagement in the region. He directed the officers to complete the work by the end of this year. The modern complex will feature an 8-lane swimming pool, a shooting range, and dedicated spaces for wrestling, boxing, kabaddi, yoga, table tennis, and badminton. The Chief Minister stated that similar multipurpose sports complexes are being developed across the state to provide constructive avenues for youth and to help curb the menace of drug abuse. Emphasising the critical role of sports in promoting a healthy and disciplined lifestyle, the Chief Minister said, 'This sports complex will be a symbol of our commitment to nurturing talent and ensuring the physical and mental well-being of our youth.' Later, the Chief Minister also inspected the ongoing work at the Rajiv Gandhi Day Boarding School in Amlehar, within the Nadaun assembly constituency. MLA Sanjay Rattan, HRTC Vice Chairman Ajay Verma, Nagar Panchayat Nadaun President Shammi Soni, District Collector Amarjeet Singh, SP Bhagat Singh, Congress leader Captain Prithvi Chand, and other dignitaries were present at the event.
