
A month after deadly crash, surviving UPSI students resume studies, but only three in campus
Only three students are attending classes at the main Tanjung Malim, Perak campus, Bernama reported Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambry Abdul Kadir saying today.
'Several others are still undergoing treatment but are continuing their studies online. None of the injured students have deferred their studies,' he was quoted telling reporters after officiating the Jeli Umno division delegates meeting here.
Zambry also confirmed that all the injured students have been discharged from hospital.
'The last injured student was discharged on July 8 from Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital in Kuala Terengganu. Three have since resumed their studies on campus, while the rest are attending classes online,' he was quoted as saying.
The crash involved a chartered bus ferrying UPSI students and a Perodua Alza along the Gerik-Jeli route in the early hours of the morning on June 9.
The students were returning from Jertih in Terengganu to their Perak campus after the Aidiladha holidays.
Fifteen students were killed while another 33 people sustained injuries, including the bus driver and attendant, as well as the Perodua Alza's driver and three passengers.

KLUANG, July 13 — A trader and director of a hardware company lost RM829,705 after falling victim to an online investment scam. Kluang police chief ACP Bahrin Mohd Noh said the 56-year-old man came across an investment advertisement promising high returns on social media in March. After contacting the so-called investment 'agent', the victim was instructed to download an app called 'PHV View' to participate. 'Between June 5 and July 9, he transferred RM829,705 in stages to five different bank accounts for the supposed return of RM4,669,065.25 shown on the app,' he said in a statement today. However, the man was then told he had to make further payments to withdraw the profits. Realising he had been scammed, the victim lodged a police report on July 10 at the Kluang Police Station. The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating. — Bernama

Newborn baby found abandoned by roadside in Kedah

(Bernama pic) KUALA LUMPUR : A newborn baby was found abandoned by the roadside at Taman Cempaka in Bukit Selambau, Kuala Muda, Kedah, yesterday morning. Police said the baby boy was found naked and placed on the gravel by the roadside, Bernama reported. Kuala Muda police chief Hanyan Ramlan said they received a call at 9.55am. 'A resident who was hanging clothes heard cries and began searching the area. She was shocked to discover the baby by the roadside. 'Neighbours who heard the woman's screams helped to move the baby to a safer spot before contacting the police,' he said in a statement. Hanyan said there were no surveillance cameras in the area. 'The baby was taken to the emergency department of Sultan Abdul Halim Hospital in Sungai Petani for an examination. 'A medical officer confirmed the baby was in a stable condition, with only minor scratches on the right eye and right side of the body,' he was quoted as saying. He said police are tracking down a 17-year-old teenager to assist in the investigation. 'A 19-year-old female, believed to be his partner, has been admitted to the hospital for further examination and treatment,' he said, adding that the case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code for abandonment of a child.

Johor Bomba calls off search after CCTV shows no one fell into sea following JB motorbike collision
JOHOR BARU, July 13 — The Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) today confirmed that none of the victims in the two-motorcycle crash near Pos Malaysia along Jalan Bazar Karat last night had fallen into the nearby seawater channel, as initially believed. Operations Commander PBK I Firdaus Abdullah said a final review of CCTV footage from the Johor Bahru City Council showed that only one victim was thrown from the impact. 'The individual was taken to Sultanah Aminah Hospital for treatment, bringing the total number of victims involved in the crash to three,' he said in a statement today.
