England-India Test series best since 2005 Ashes: Agnew

Qatar Tribune2 days ago
The just concluded Test series between England and India has been described as the best since 2005 Ashes, says Jonathan Agnew, English cricket broadcaster and a former cricketer. Writing for the BBC, Agnew said: 'This series between England and India has definitely been the best that I have been involved in since the Ashes in 2005. Winning in Australia in 2010-11 was also special, but this has had all the ingredients that makes Test match cricket so special - the intensity, the combative nature at times, the immense skill. It has had everything, it has been every bit as competitive and compelling as any Ashes series. Of course, England supporters would have loved Gus Atkinson to have scored those runs, even just six more for a tie, but to get a finish like that - regardless of who wins - is absolutely great for Test cricket. Ultimately it was India who won the fifth Test by six runs to secure a 2-2 draw, a result they deserved. I've enjoyed the competitive nature throughout, it is what Test cricket is all about. You don't see it in T20 or franchise cricket. It shows how much people and the players care about Test cricket and playing for your country, you can tell the difference. The 7,187 runs scored is the most in a five-Test series, and it is just the second time in the past 20 years that every game in a series of that length has gone to a final day. If any administrator in the world game looks at this series and is considering four-day Tests as the way to go, they shouldn't be an administrator in cricket. That's all that needs to be said.'

Community Shield Final to mark official return of football season

For all football fans, the wait is finally over. The 2025–2026 season kicks off with the historic FA Community Shield, England's traditional curtain-raiser held at Wembley Stadium. This year's clash sees Premier League champions Liverpool take on Crystal Palace, the FA Cup winners who stunned Manchester City last season. Set for Sunday, August 10 at 6 pm both teams will be eager to claim the first silverware of the season and start their campaign on a high note. The FA Community Shield is the traditional season opener in English football, played between the Premier League champions and the FA Cup winners. Established in 1908, the match has grown into a prestigious fixture, held recently at Wembley Stadium. Manchester United is the most successful club in the competition's history with 21 trophies, followed by Arsenal with 17 and Liverpool with 16. The last four editions have seen a variety of winners Leicester City (2021), Liverpool (2022), Arsenal (2023), and Manchester City (2024) highlighting the ongoing intensity and balance of power in English football. Head-to-head stats between Liverpool and Crystal Palace show a historical advantage for the Reds. Across 32 matches, Liverpool have won 21 times, Crystal Palace 7, with 4 matches ending in a draw. Liverpool's most dominant victory was a 7–0 during the 2020 Premier League season, while Palace's most memorable win was a dramatic 4–3 triumph in 2019. Their last six encounters have been much tighter: Liverpool won twice, Palace once, and three matches ended in draws, an indication that this clash might be closer than many expect, especially in a one-off final where anything can happen. The match will be streamed live on TOD, giving football fans across the Middle East and North Africa the chance to enjoy all the excitement as the new English football season gets underway. Expected Lineups Liverpool (4-2-3-1) Alisson Becker Jeremie Frimpong – Virgil van Dijk – Ibrahima Konate – Milos Kerkez Ryan Gravenberch – Alexis Mac Allister Mohamed Salah – Florian Wirtz – Cody Gakpo Hugo Ekitike Crystal Palace (3-4-2-1) Dean Henderson Chris Richards – Maxence Lacroix – Marc Guehi Daniel Muñoz – Adam Wharton – Daichi Kamada – Tyrick Mitchell Ismaila Sarr – Eberechi Eze Jean-Philippe Mateta.

Coach Gambhir hails India's performance

ANI New Delhi With India drawing series with a spectacular victory against England in the last Test of the five-match contest, head coach Gautam Gambhir hailed the team's performance, saying that the team 'deserves every bit of it' and it is difficult to 'mention one name' which stands out. The Indian cricket team's new era under coach Gambhir and captain Shubman Gill began on a promising note, as immense fighting spirit, resilience and never-say-die mentality of a new-look Indian squad helped them seal a series draw, beating England by six runs at The Oval in a thriller to level the series 2-2. Speaking to the media following his return to Delhi, Gambhir said he is happy. 'I think boys deserve every bit of it for the way they performed in all five Tests.' Gambhir hailed pacer Siraj, who was the leading wicket-taker with 23 scalps, including nine at The Oval, but pointed out it is difficult to mention just one name who stood out the most. 'I think he (Siraj) has been brilliant. In fact, not only he, but the entire team has performed brilliantly. It is very difficult for me to mention one name, but these guys have, be it Shubman, be it Siraj, be it everyone... I think the boys have been brilliant throughout the last two months,' said Gambhir. Gambhir said that Shubman did a 'fabulous job'. 'That is all I can say, and he will keep doing good for Indian cricket,' he concluded. The series saw close contests in all matches with both sides making new records. All matches ended on the fifth day and the last match of the series was befitting a final with both teams dominating different sessions.
