
Scientists discover world's rarest blood group, found in just one person
The sole known carrier is a woman from Guadeloupe whose blood is so unique that doctors couldn't find a single compatible donor.
The discovery of the 48th recognised blood group, called 'Gwada-negative', began when the woman's blood plasma reacted against every potential donor sample tested, including those from her own siblings. Consequently, it was impossible to find a suitable blood donor for her.
Most people know their blood type – A, B, AB or O – along with whether they are Rh-positive or negative. But these familiar categories (those letters plus 'positive' or 'negative') represent just two of several dozens of blood group systems that determine compatibility for transfusions.
Each system reflects subtle but crucial differences in the proteins and sugars coating our red blood cells.
To solve the mystery of the Guadeloupian woman's incompatible blood, scientists turned to cutting-edge genetic analysis. Using whole exome sequencing – a technique that examines all 20,000-plus human genes – they discovered a mutation in a gene called PIGZ.
This gene produces an enzyme responsible for adding a specific sugar to an important molecule on cell membranes. The missing sugar changes the structure of a molecule on the surface of red blood cells.
This change creates a new antigen – a key feature that defines a blood group – resulting in an entirely new classification: Gwada-positive (having the antigen) or -negative (lacking it).
Using gene editing technology, the team confirmed their discovery by recreating the mutation in a lab. So red blood cells from all blood donors tested are Gwada-positive and the Guadeloupean patient is the only known Gwada-negative person on the planet.
The implications of the discovery extend beyond blood transfusions. The patient suffers from mild intellectual disability, and tragically, she lost two babies at birth – outcomes that may be connected to her rare genetic mutation.
The enzyme produced by the PIGZ gene operates at the final stage of building a complex molecule called GPI (glycosylphosphatidylinositol).
Previous research has shown that people with defects in other enzymes needed for GPI assembly can experience neurological problems ranging from developmental delays to seizures. Stillbirths are also common among women with these inherited disorders.
Although the Caribbean patient is the only person in the world so far with this rare blood type, neurological conditions including developmental delay, intellectual disability and seizures have been noted in other people with defects in enzymes needed earlier in the GPI assembly line.
The Gwada discovery highlights both the marvels and challenges of human genetic diversity. Blood groups evolved partly as protection against infectious diseases (many bacteria, viruses and parasites use blood group molecules as entry points into cells). This means your blood type can influence your susceptibility to certain diseases.
But extreme rarity creates medical dilemmas. The French researchers acknowledge they cannot predict what would happen if Gwada-incompatible blood were transfused into the Guadeloupian woman. Even if other Gwada-negative people exist, they would be extremely difficult to locate. It is also unclear if they can become blood donors.
This reality points towards a futuristic solution: lab-grown blood cells. Scientists are already working on growing red blood cells from stem cells that could be genetically modified to match ultra-rare blood types. In the case of Gwada, researchers could artificially create Gwada-negative red blood cells by mutating the PIGZ gene.
A growing field
Gwada joins 47 other blood group systems recognised by the International Society of Blood Transfusion. Like most of these blood-group systems, it was discovered in a hospital lab where technicians were trying to find compatible blood for a patient.
The name reflects the case's Caribbean roots: Gwada is slang for someone from Guadeloupe, giving this blood group both scientific relevance and cultural resonance.
As genetic sequencing becomes more advanced and widely used, researchers expect to uncover more rare blood types. Each discovery expands our understanding of human variation and raises fresh challenges for transfusion and other types of personalised medicine.

Surge in cannabis-induced psychotic episodes across the UK as potency of strains has increased
Cannabis-induced psychosis is becoming increasingly common across the UK, a leading psychiatrist has warned. The widely used class B drug – also known as marijuana or weed – can cause dependency, and, in the year to March 2024, 2.3million people in the UK reported using it. But while regular use has more than halved in the past two decades, the number of cannabis-induced psychosis episodes has spiked as varieties on sale have become stronger. Those experiencing a psychotic episode commonly have symptoms such as hallucinations, dissociation or unusual changes in behaviour. And while these resolve in most cases, side-effects can last for years. Studies show cannabis can even trigger schizophrenia – a chronic mental health condition characterised by psychotic episodes where individuals lose touch with reality, experiencing delusions and hallucinations. Dr Niall Campbell, a consultant psychiatrist at the Priory rehabilitation centre, warns of a deepening public health issue, stemming from easy online access to highly potent forms of the drug known as 'skunk'. Made from unpollinated cannabis plants which naturally contain higher levels of THC – the main psychoactive ingredient – skunk greatly increases the risk of paranoia and hallucinations. 'There has been a visible rise in the number of people needing intensive support for psychosis as a result of cannabis use,' said Dr Campbell. 'I don't think this is surprising given how easy skunk is to buy. What begins with smoking a few 'joints' and feeling a bit paranoid can easily escalate. Over time people can reach a psychotic state which won't go away, even if they stop smoking – they can become very depressed or suicidal.' It comes after the London Drugs Commission released a report earlier this year calling for more services to tackle cannabis addiction.

NHS pays hospitals £33 for each patient removed from waiting list
Hospitals across England are being paid £33 for every patient taken off a waiting list. The health service payments, designed to show the NHS is getting on top of the treatment backlog, have sparked concerns that incentives could lead to mistakes and hospitals gaming the system. Labour has made reducing waiting times a core commitment since the election and Wes Streeting, the health secretary, has pledged to fix what he last year called a 'broken NHS'. • Keir Starmer promised to fix the NHS. Last month NHS England and the government claimed 'hard-working' staff had delivered 'record numbers of treatments', waiting lists having fallen by 260,000 since Labour was elected. Overall the health service is still treating fewer patients than are joining the waiting list. The latest official performance data released on Thursday shows an estimated 7.37 million treatments were yet to be carried out at the end of June, relating to 6.23 million patients. As part of its recovery plan, NHS England has confirmed it is paying hospitals £33 per patient removed from the waiting list. Georgia Watson, a researcher and public health registrar, said work to make sure waiting lists were accurate needed to be funded, but said the process 'isn't transparent enough, and it isn't a substitute for treating patients'. She added: 'Large numbers of cases are being taken off the list without having a record of receiving any treatment or other management, and NHS data doesn't currently spell out the different reasons for this. 'It makes it hard to tell whether the NHS is keeping up with demand, and to see if the right people are being removed. If taxpayer money is also being spent on incentivising validations, there is even more reason to make it clearer to the public.'

Despite carrots' reputation as a 'superfood', too many of them might ruin men's sex lives
They provide so many health benefits that carrots are considered a 'superfood' – one that might even help us to see in the dark. But eating too much of the vegetable could play havoc with a man's sex life, scientists have found. Carrots contain compounds called carotenes and, according to a study, men who consume high levels of them are almost 60 per cent more likely to develop erectile dysfunction (ED). The compound, which the body turns into vitamin A, is beneficial because of antioxidant properties that protect cells from damage. However, researchers in China say too much of it may have a negative effect. They analysed a database of male participants for epigenetic markers – changes in DNA – linked to high levels of different compounds. The team, from Peking University Hospital in Beijing, only found a link to ED with carotenes. Although the reason for this remains unclear, they suggest a high intake of carotenes could cause damage to the endothelium – the inner lining of blood vessels. During sexual arousal, endothelial cells release nitric oxide, a chemical which starts the process that encourages blood flow to the penis, triggering an erection. Carotenes are also found in other orange-coloured vegetables such as sweet potato, butternut squash and pumpkin, and in fruits such as apricot and mango. The research team wrote in the Archives of Medical Science journal: 'Our findings suggest that higher carotene levels were significantly associated with increased risk of erectile dysfunction. 'This indicates that carotene levels may play a potential role in its development. Further studies are needed to explore the precise biological mechanisms by which carotene influences erectile function and whether diet changes could mitigate this.' There is no previously known link between carotenes and ED. It is estimated that one in five men in the UK suffer from the condition, but this increases to a third of those over 60 and more than half of men over 70. It can be linked to heart disease, obesity, Type 2 diabetes, low testosterone levels and prostate problems.
