Small talk is good for you. Here's how to get better at it, according to experts
'Hello, how are you?' the stranger greets you. 'Good, and you?' might be your response.
Your conversation partner might proceed to talk to you about something trivial — the weather outside, the latest game, an annoyance during the morning commute or something silly the person's dog did that morning.
It's nothing that matters much, but you've suddenly found yourself participating in small talk.
Some people might dread the seemingly insignificant conversation or think it's not worth their time, while others may delight in the light exchange. In most cases, especially with strangers or acquaintances, small talk is unavoidable as both parties try to find common ground.
'It's communication that we use to orient and acquaint ourselves with other people, (and) it's the gateway to deeper, richer talk,' said Matt Abrahams, a lecturer in organizational behavior at Stanford Graduate School of Business. 'Chances are, somebody in your friendship group, if not more, you met through a small talk situation.'
For people without much practice in small talk, the challenge may feel daunting. But there are ways to get better at this form of communication. And it's worthwhile to try, as the exchanges can positively affect a person's overall well-being, Abrahams said.
Here's what experts want people to know about the benefits of small talk.
The benefits of small talk
People facing the prospect of small talk may put too much pressure on themselves to perform well when meeting someone for the first time. They also may worry about the daunting act of speaking spontaneously, which requires thinking on the spot and responding fast to keep the conversation going, said Abrahams, who hosts the podcast 'Think Fast, Talk Smart,' to share tips for strategic communication.
So why should you do it? Whether or not you seek out small talk or avoid it at all costs, research has shown that light conversations with people you don't know well can have beneficial effects on health and well-being, such as boosting your mood and decreasing your feelings of isolation.
'(Small talk) is something that we psychologists think is kind of fundamental. It's like (how) we need food, we need water — we need to feel like we belong and that we matter to other people,' said Dr. Gillian Sandstrom, an associate professor in the psychology of kindness at the UK's University of Sussex who has researched the effects of minimal social interactions.
Then-US Surgeon General Dr. Vivek Murthy declared loneliness an epidemic in the United States in 2023. Daily loneliness affects 1 in 5 adults in the US, the highest level in two years, according to Gallup data from October.
By having a light conversation with an acquaintance or stranger, people can feel more connected with one another and have a stronger sense of community, said Sandstrom, whose research has shown that those who have more casual daily interactions, such as talking to a neighbor or a barista at a coffee shop, feel a greater sense of belonging.
'Talking to strangers can feel scary because we don't know what's going to happen, but also that's kind of exciting,' Sandstrom said. 'It's fun and it's nice to have some unexpected thing happen, where we learn something new or see a new perspective.'
How to become an expert at small talk
In some scenarios, such as an upcoming work or networking event, people can prepare ahead of time for the expected spontaneous conversations, said Dr. Sunita Sah, an organizational psychologist and professor of management and organizations at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York. Researching people ahead of time who you know will be at an event and planning questions to ask can help to alleviate nerves, Sah said.
In more spontaneous moments, there are tricks to making good conversation. The easiest method is to make an observation about your shared surroundings, which is why people often talk about the weather, or to ask people general questions to learn more about them, Sah said. (That's why people often ask if you did anything interesting over the weekend or if you have any vacation plans.)
This kind of conversation isn't a tennis match, where one needs to get the ball back to the other side of the court as fast as possible. Abrahams said he likes to think of this exchange more as a game of hacky sack — in which the goal is to be collaborative to keep the sack in the air.
'You have to coordinate with the other person, so I want to set you up, so then you can set me back up. It's about being interested, not interesting, and that mindset shift is important,' he said.
Sometimes slowing down and taking a beat before responding can reduce rambling and give more clarity and structure to an answer.
'People will feel in small talk and other spontaneous speaking situations that they have to respond immediately, (but) you can say, 'Give me a second to think about that.' Or you can ask a clarifying question that gives yourself time to think,' Abrahams added.
Like anything, small talk gets better with practice, Sandstrom said. If someone goes a long time without socializing in casual settings, small talk might seem scarier than it is.
In her research, Sandstrom found that the more people engage in small talk, the more confident they become in their social skills and the less worried they are about rejection, she said.
At the end of the day, small talk is meant to be lighthearted and enjoyable, and a little humor and compassion go a long way, Sah said.
'I personally really love small talk. I think it gives you lovely interactions with people throughout the day that you probably don't want to go deeper with,' Sah said. 'It really does build rapport and trust and some level of friendliness.
'In today's age where everybody can just revert to their phones or go days without speaking to someone, I think that small talk (helps) take away the loneliness aspect.'

Frailty Status Predicts Outcomes After Hospital Discharge
TOPLINE: In older hospitalized adults, frailty was associated with discharge to postacute care facilities and a higher risk for readmissions and mortality. METHODOLOGY: Researchers conducted a retrospective cohort study to examine whether frailty was associated with the various facilities patients were discharged to and their health outcomes. The analysis included over 23,000 patients aged 65 years or older (53% women) who were hospitalized for at least 24 hours between 2021 and 2023 at five hospitals within a US-based academic health system. An electronic health record-based frailty index capturing 54 age-related health deficits was calculated at the most recent outpatient visit before hospitalization. Patients were classified as non-frail, pre-frail, frail, or severely frail. Overall, 22% of patients were identified as non-frail, 46% as pre-frail, 23% as frail, and 8% as severely frail. The hospital discharge destinations included home, home with home health services, and skilled nursing facilities (SNFs); health outcomes included rates of hospital readmission and post-discharge mortality. TAKEAWAY: Overall, 61% of patients were discharged home, 24% were discharged to SNF, and 15% were discharged home with home health services. Patients with higher degrees of frailty were more likely to be discharged to SNFs or home healthcare than to home alone (adjusted odds ratio [aOR], 1.20; 95% CI, 1.09-1.33 for frail and aOR, 1.17; 95% CI, 1.03-1.34 for severely frail patients). Patients with frailty had higher odds of readmission within 90 days of discharge than those without frailty (aOR, 1.91; 95% CI, 1.67-2.20), with odds increasing as the degree of frailty increased; a similar pattern was observed for the risks for mortality within 90 days after discharge. Discharge to SNFs was associated with significantly higher mortality, with hazard ratios of 5.46 (95% CI, 4.43-6.73) and 2.06 (95% CI, 1.54-2.77) for those discharged home with home health services than those discharged to home alone. IN PRACTICE: 'Automated frailty assessment at hospital discharge can identify in real time the most vulnerable individuals — severely frail patients discharged to SNF — for pragmatic trials and population health interventions,' the authors wrote. 'Discharge with home health services, particularly for frail patients, may mitigate readmission risk.' SOURCE: This study was led by Charles T. Semelka, of the Department of Internal Medicine at the Wake Forest University School of Medicine in Winston-Salem, North Carolina. It was published online on August 6, 2025, in Journal of the American Geriatrics Society. LIMITATIONS: Confounding factors, including functional status, caregiver support, illness severity, may have been unaccounted for. The study was conducted in only one healthcare system in the southeastern US. The analyses only included individuals with a frailty score. DISCLOSURES: This study received support from the Foundation of Post-Acute and Long-Term Care Medicine and Claude D. Pepper Older Americans Independence Center, Wake Forest School of Medicine. One author reported receiving grants from the funding agencies for activities related to this work and professional effort. This article was created using several editorial tools, including AI, as part of the process. Human editors reviewed this content before publication.

Vaccinating young children against Covid-19 may be more challenging this respiratory virus season
Parents in the United States who want to vaccinate their young children against Covid-19 may face a growing set of challenges this fall. The US Food and Drug Administration might not renew authorization for Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine for children younger than 5, the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention told state and local health officials on Friday. 'This decision would affect Pfizer's pediatric COVID-19 vaccine for children aged 6m–4y for the 2025–2026 season,' the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases said in an email that was obtained by CNN. In May, US Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr. announced that the CDC would no longer recommend Covid-19 vaccines for healthy children or pregnant women. The CDC's immunization schedule was updated to reflect that children would be able to get the vaccines after consulting with a health care provider — what's known as 'shared decision-making.' But without FDA authorization, Pfizer's Covid-19 vaccine would no longer be available to any children younger than 5 and the other option available for healthy children with no underlying conditions in this age group, Moderna's Covid-19 vaccine, would have to be given 'off label' by a willing pharmacist or physician. This contradicts the intent of shared clinical decision-making, said Dr. Paul Offit, a pediatrician and director of the Vaccine Education Center at Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. 'Shared clinical decision-making assumes that you're making a decision for that child whether they're healthy or not healthy. So now it's confusing,' he said. Covid-19 vaccines first became available to the American public during the pandemic under emergency use authorization, known as EUA — special permissions used by the FDA during an emergency that are short of full approval. Pfizer has had full FDA approval for its Covid-19 vaccine for individuals age 12 and older since 2022. The company anticipates that this approval will expand to children ages 5 to 11 for the upcoming respiratory virus season, according to the email that the CDC's National Center for Immunization and Respiratory Diseases sent to state and local health officials on Friday. But vaccine access for the youngest children, who are most vulnerable to severe illness from a Covid-19 infection, would be significantly more limited if the FDA does not renew emergency authorization for the Pfizer vaccine for children under 5. Pfizer confirmed to CNN that the FDA has said that it may not renew the emergency use authorization or the Pfizer-BioNTech Covid-19 vaccine for children ages 6 months to 4 years. 'We are currently in discussions with the agency on potential paths forward and have requested that the EUA for this age group remain in place for the 2025-2026 season,' Pfizer said in a statement. 'It is important to note that these deliberations are not related to the safety and efficacy of the vaccine which continues to demonstrate a favorable profile.' Fatima Khan, co-founder of the nonprofit grassroots group Protect Their Future, which advocates for vaccine access for kids, told CNN in a statement, that 'taking a proven, safe and effective vaccine away from vulnerable children is unconscionable.' 'The science is clear: Infants face Covid-19 hospitalization rates comparable to those over 65. Refusing to authorize it for children under 5 doesn't protect them–it abandons them,' she said. 'Parents have already struggled to safeguard their youngest because of limited vaccine access. Now that protection may disappear entirely this fall just as schools reopen. If this stands, it will be a lasting stain on our public health system and on every leader who left our children behind.' Moderna also has a Covid-19 vaccine available for children age 11 and younger. It was granted full approval by the FDA in July but only for those who are at 'increased risk for COVID-19 disease.' Moderna plans to increase vaccine supply for children to 'help mitigate any potential supply gap,' according to the CDC email sent on Friday, but Moderna is still determining the specific volume and timing. Like flu vaccines, Covid-19 vaccines have typically been updated with formulations that best target the virus strains that are in circulation each season. But the FDA has not yet approved the formulation for the 2025-2026 season. 'I think the bottom line is that children are going to be less likely to get this vaccine, which goes against the data,' Offit said. At a meeting in April, the CDC's vaccine advisory committee heard evidence that children accounted for about 4% of all Covid-19 hospitalizations over last fall and winter's respiratory virus season. Rates of Covid-19 hospitalizations among children are highest for the youngest age groups, CDC data shows. Last respiratory virus season, there were 48 Covid-19 hospitalizations for every 100,000 children under 5 – nearly seven times the rate for older children and more than twice the rate for adults under 50. 'It's a war on mRNA vaccines. Why? Because mRNA vaccines are now political,' Offit said. 'It's just a war against the science, war against the data, and we will suffer this. And the thing that I fear the most is: Will we know we're suffering this? Will we have the surveillance capacity to know who's getting hospitalized with Covid, who's dying from Covid?' Covid-19 levels are on the rise in the US, with transmission increasing in at least 45 states, according to the CDC. In a statement to CNN, the US Department of Health and Human Services said that the agency does not comment on potential regulatory changes. 'The COVID-19 pandemic ended with the expiration of the federal public health emergency in May 2023,' spokesperson Andrew Nixon said in an email. 'Unless officially announced by HHS, discussion about future agency action should be regarded as pure speculation.' Solve the daily Crossword
