Delegation came here to expose Pakistani propaganda: BJP's Aparajita Sarangi in Indonesia
Jakarta [Indonesia], May 30 (ANI): Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Aparajita Sarangi on Friday interacted with the Indian diaspora and said that the multi-party delegation led by Janata Dal (United) MP Sanjay Kumar Jha had come here to explain India's stand on cross-border terrorism to the international community and to tell expose Pakistani propaganda of lies.
'We have come here with only two purposes: to explain India's stand on cross-border terrorism to the international community... and to tell everyone that Pakistan has been indulging in creating false propaganda and peddling lies... We had a very fruitful interaction with everyone who matters in Indonesia,' Sarangi said while addressing the gathering here.
Apprising about the brutality of the Pahalgam terrorist attack, the BJP leader said that India advocates for peace. Still, in the April 22 attack, women and children saw their husbands and fathers get murdered.
'War has never been India's choice. We have always been advocates of peace, and we will continue to be so...We can never go to war, but this time, women and their children saw the murder of their husbands and fathers...Vermillion, a sign of a married woman, was removed from their foreheads by the murderers from Pakistan,' Sarangi said.
'There is no doubt that Pakistan is nourishing and promoting terrorism... There are recurring events of terrorism that Pakistan perpetrated... There is a need for peace within our territory, not a national, but a global need,' she added.
The delegation member pointed out that the DGMO of Pakistan contacted the DGMO of India on May 10 to request a halt to the conflict between the two neighbouring countries.
Further apprising about the abrogation of Article 370, which gave autonomy to Jammu and Kashmir, Sarangi said that Kashmir has become an integral part of India, which irritated Pakistan, which doesn't want peace in India.
'On August 5, 2019, Article 370 and Article 35A were given goodbye. The constitution was amended, and Kashmir became an integral part of India. The rest is history as far as the progress of Kashmir is concerned. This irritated the neighbour. They don't want peace and stability in the country. They don't want India to move on the path of progress. And that is why all these things have been happening... This time, there is nothing but zero tolerance against terrorism,' she said.
Comparing India and Pakistan over foreign exchange reserves, Sarangi said India was on the cusp of progress with foreign exchange reserves of 690 billion dollars. In comparison, the neighbouring country has reserves of just 15 billion dollars.
'India is on the cusp of progress... We are the fourth-largest economy and will be the third, surpassing Germany in the next 2.5 to 3 years. Our GDP growth rate is 6.4 per cent. We have Foreign exchange results to the tune of 690 billion dollars. Pakistan has foreign exchange reserves of just 15 billion dollars. We have a powerful population of 1.4 billion. Most of this population is young. The median age is just 29,' the BJP leader said.
'Under the Bharat Mala project, 65,000 km of highway was done... As per the World Bank report on ease of business, we were at 163rd in 2014, and now we are in the 63rd position... We are improving on all fronts... We have won as far as the development of India is concerned... I am saying all this to bring you to the point that development is the core agenda of the Indian government, and we do not want any disruption,' she added.
The multi-party delegation led by JD-U MP Sanjay Kumar Jha includes Aparajita Sarangi (BJP), Brij Lal (BJP), John Brittas (CPI-M), Pradan Baruah (BJP), Hemang Joshi (BJP), Salman Khurshid and Mohan Kumar. (ANI)

Odisha's public universities, colleges asked to observe ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' to mark 50th year of Emergency
The Odisha government has asked all public universities and colleges in the state to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' on June 25 to mark the 50th year of the imposition of Emergency. The higher education department, in a letter to the universities and colleges, asked for the organisation of an awareness march involving students and faculty members with placards and slogans promoting constitutional values. They were also asked to conduct debates, workshops and lectures on the imposition of Emergency, and the importance of constitutional rights and duties. The department's letter said the imposition of the Emergency from June 25, 1975, stands as a stark reminder of the darkest period in India's democratic history. This day has been notified as 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' by a Union Ministry of Home Affairs notification dated July 11, 2024, the letter pointed out. 'Emergency witnessed a sweeping suspension of civil liberties, erosion of constitutional safeguards and unprecedented centralisation of executive power. Fundamental rights were breached, the press silenced under strict censorship, (and) thousands of political leaders, journalists and civil society members were imprisoned,' the letter read. It said observing the 50th year of the Emergency was required for 'deep reflection and renewed commitment to democratic values and constitutional morality'. Universities and colleges have also been asked to organise seminars on the Preamble of the Constitution, hold panel discussions, organise various competitions, documentary screenings and street plays. The institutions have been further told to record attendance at these events and to submit records. The BJP government in Odisha has also made elaborate arrangements to observe 'Samvidhan Hatya Diwas' at a state-level event. Earlier, the BJP government in the state announced a monthly pension of Rs 20,000 for those imprisoned during the Emergency imposed by then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Medha Kulkarni demands Pune railway station be named after Thorle Bajirao; NCP (SP) objects
Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader and Rajya Sabha MP Medha Kulkarni on Monday demanded that Pune Railway Station be renamed Thorle Bajirao Peshwa Pune Railway Station, invoking the legacy of the Maratha general. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa. (HT) The demand, raised during a meeting convened by the Pune Railway Division to discuss issues concerning the Pune and Solapur regions, was met with objection from Nationalist Congress Party (SP) spokesperson and former mayor Ankush Kakade. 'We are not in favour of changing the name of Pune Railway Station, which has a long history. If the central government insists on renaming, they should also consider names like Mahatma Jyotiba Phule or Gopal Krishna Gokhale, along with Bajirao Peshwa,' Kakade said. Kulkarni argued that several organisations had submitted demands for renaming the station after Bajirao Peshwa and said the Prime Minister and the central government favour reflecting local history through public spaces such as railway stations. 'There is no representation of Pune's rich history at the station. I demand that it be renamed after Thorle Bajirao Peshwa,' she said. The meeting was also attended by MPs Amol Kolhe and Nilesh Lanke. Kulkarni has recently taken up several issues tied to cultural and religious sensitivities. During Hanuman Jayanti, she visited a dargah and asked that the volume of loudspeakers be reduced, citing temple prayers nearby. She also wrote to the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) demanding that Sarasbaug be shut down after Bakri Eid, alleging that religious rituals and non-vegetarian food were involved on the premises. The PMC subsequently closed access to the garden. Her latest demand comes at a time when both the central and state governments have undertaken renaming exercises. The Maharashtra government recently changed the names of Aurangabad to Sambhajinagar and Ahmednagar to Ahilyanagar.

SC stays deportation of ex-LTTE member
The Supreme Court on Monday stayed the deportation of a Sri Lankan Tamil refugee, Bhaskaran Kumarasamy, a former member of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE), who fled to India in 2004 during the final years of the country's civil war, citing a serious threat to his life if sent back. The bench sought a response from the Centre and the Tamil Nadu government on the current status of the man's deportation. 'Considering that the deportation order is five years and six months old, we would like to be apprised of the status of the deportation. Meanwhile, the deportation is stayed,' said the bench, posting the matter for further hearing on August 4. Kumarasamy's counsel urged the court to intervene, pointing out that his client was in danger of being killed upon his return to Sri Lanka and should be permitted to appear before the Swiss embassy in New Delhi to pursue a pending application for asylum. The court acknowledged the concern and also observed that Kumarasamy may explore the possibility of applying for Indian citizenship under the newly enacted Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), if eligible. Kumarasamy, a former cadre of the LTTE, fled from Jaffna's Nalloor area in 2004 with his wife Sakuntala and daughters, Sobana and Sobiha -- then aged eight and six. The family entered India through Rameswaram and were lodged at the Mandapam refugee camp in Tamil Nadu. Kumarasamy claims to have given up arms before leaving Sri Lanka. In 2019, the Tamil Nadu government issued a deportation order against him, and since then, he has been entangled in a prolonged legal battle to stay in India. The Madras high court initially stayed the deportation in August 2020, noting the credible threat to his life in Sri Lanka. 'For the past 13 years, he is in India. Moreover, his family members, father, brother, brother's wife and daughter, were reportedly murdered by the Sri Lankan army,' the court noted at the time, adding that deporting him would not serve the interests of justice. However, the high court reversed course in June 2021. Dismissing his plea to visit the Swiss embassy in Delhi to process his asylum request, the court held that Kumarasamy could no longer be considered a refugee under Indian law. It relied on the Tamil Nadau police's Q Branch's assertion that Sri Lanka was now safe for returnees and pointed out that Kumarasamy had briefly travelled to Sri Lanka in 2014 for eye surgery -- a fact that, according to the court, weakened his claim of a credible threat. Kumarasamy was also among 19 Sri Lankan Tamil refugees booked in 2016 by Tamil Nadu's Q Branch under multiple laws, including the Foreigners Act and other penal charges related to conspiracy, trafficking and cheating. He was arrested and moved from Bagayam refugee camp to the Tiruchirappalli special camp, and later to Puzhal central jail. Though he and the others were acquitted of all charges in 2019, Kumarasamy remained confined to the special camp in Tiruchirappalli. In 2020, he began the process of seeking asylum in Switzerland, where a sizeable diaspora of Sri Lankan Tamil refugees resides. According to Kumarasamy, the Swiss embassy in Delhi had asked him to appear for an interview as part of his application process. However, he was unable to obtain the necessary travel permission from the Tamil Nadu authorities. He claims that despite submitting official communication from the embassy, both the district collector of Tiruchirappalli and the local revenue inspector denied him permission to travel to Delhi. In February 2021, Kumarasamy filed a petition in the high court to be allowed to travel to Delhi. But in June that year, the court not only dismissed his plea but also agreed with the authorities' contention that he no longer qualified for refugee protections.
