Nine Medchal medical students test positive for ganja after drug peddler's confession

On August 1, acting on a tip-off, the EAGLE team apprehended Arfath Ahmed Khan, a drug peddler with a three-year history of trafficking. He was caught with 2 kg of ganja worth around Rs 50,000. Police said the identities of the 100 consumers were traced through UPI transactions.
All nine students who tested positive are hostel inmates. Counselling sessions were held in the presence of their parents and the college principal. They have been admitted to a de-addiction and rehabilitation centre.
The EAGLE team said it would continue its crackdown on drug abuse and announced that drug tests would be conducted regularly across educational institutions in the state. College heads have been instructed to prevent any illegal activity on campus.

UP averages five police encounters a day since '17
Lucknow: Since March 20, 2017, UP Police has conducted 15,140 encounters across the state, averaging almost five a day. These encounters resulted in the deaths of 243 criminals and the arrest of over 31,000 accused, according to UP police data up to August 6, 2025. The data shows that 1,720 cops were injured in these confrontations, while 18 were killed in the line of duty. State DGP Rajeev Krishna said every action is taken with transparency, adherence to legal procedure, and respect for human rights. The significant decline in organised crime since 2017 reflects the commitment to ensuring a safe and secure environment for people and a policy of zero tolerance towards crime and criminals. "UP Police has followed NHRC guidelines in these encounters," he mentioned that during exchanges of fire with dreaded criminals, police officers have shown exceptional bravery, laid down their lives in the line of duty, and suffered bullet injuries. "Under the policy of zero tolerance of crime and criminals, extensive operations against gang lords and mafia have been undertaken by UP police since 2017 and will continue," he added. In Meerut alone, 81 criminals were killed, 2,951 injured, and 4,568 arrested during this period. In Lucknow Zone, police conducted 806 encounters, killing 17 criminals and arresting 1,781, with 166 police personnel injured. The Gautam Buddh Nagar Commissionerate saw 1,084 encounters, while Kanpur Zone reported 671. Western Uttar Pradesh zones and commissionerates dominate the encounter figures. Meerut, Agra, Bareilly, and Gautam Buddh Nagar together account for over half of all encounters statewide. Officials attribute this to the concentration of organised criminal networks in these areas. Among commissionerates, Gautam Buddh Nagar leads with 1,084 encounters, followed by Agra Commissionerate (430) and Ghaziabad Commissionerate (696). Varanasi Commissionerate reported 124 encounters, while Lucknow Commissionerate saw 132. Senior police officers say the encounters were largely the result of armed criminals opening fire during raids, prompting retaliatory action. "The objective has always been to ensure public safety and law enforcement, with encounters being a last resort in situations where criminals fire at police teams," a senior officer said. Some of the important encounters include those of Vikas Dubey, who had a bounty of Rs 5 lakh on his head. He was involved in 60 criminal cases and killed eight police officers, including a DSP. Shakeel Ahmad, another criminal with a bounty of Rs 2.5 lakh, was involved in 25 cases. His criminal activities were a significant concern. Kamal Bahadur, also with a bounty of Rs 2.5 lakh, was linked to 10 criminal cases. His elimination was seen as a relief to the local communities affected by his crimes. Lastly, Laxman Yadav, who had a bounty of Rs 1.5 lakh, was involved in 34 cases. His criminal record was extensive, and his encounter marked the end of a long-standing threat in the region. Delhi: In Bhogal, a multi-level parking lot unused for 15 yrs
In the heart of Bhogal in Jangpura, an imposing but crumbling structure looms over one of the neighbourhood's busiest roads — a half-built, and permanently unfunctional multi-level parking, which has stood frozen in time for over a decade and a half now. It was right here, on the stretch facing this ghostly construction, that a dispute between neighbours spiralled into violence — ending in the murder of Bollywood actor Huma Qureshi's cousin. The fight, like countless others in the congested colony, was over a parking space. Residents, however, say the irony is bitter. 'We have had a giant parking space in front of us for the last 15 years, but can't park a single car in it,' said Anil Goswami, a senior member of the Bhogal Resident Welfare Association (RWA). The shed's once-white pillars are now streaked with grime and cracks snake on its creases. A marble black plague, installed by the mayor of the then-unified Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD), stands outside like a forgotten gravestone — lettering eroded beyond recognition. No car has ever entered the parking lot, which was 'inaugurated' twice by area councillors and ceremonially opened once later. The structure, meant to ease the locality's chronic shortage of parking, remains a shell with missing windows, stolen pipes, and rainwater pooling inside every monsoon. 'Last year's flood turned it into a swimming pool… It has become a haven for anti-social elements. Even the fittings have been looted,' said Monu Chaddha, the president of the Bhogal RWA. This parking project had begun in 2010 alongside two others — one in Kalkaji and another in New Friends Colony. All three were allotted to a single contractor, with an original cost based on preliminary drawings. Later, the contractor modified the designs, increasing the built-up area by 21 per cent and pushing up the estimated cost by an additional Rs 20 crore. A total of Rs 105 crore has already been sunk into these three projects. The MCD and the contractor locked horns over the escalation — the work stopped, numerous deadlines lapsed, and the project eventually slipped into a bureaucratic limbo. The contractor has since been blacklisted for five years. 'It has been 10 years since the project crossed its completion deadline but nothing has moved since 2018. The (Delhi) High Court had even passed an order, instructing its completion in six months — that was years ago,' Goswami said. 'When (then) AAP mayor had visited the parking lot for an inspection, it was told that another Rs 10 crore would be needed to make the projects functional,' Goswami said. The former mayor, during one such visit, had reportedly offered to provide Rs 5 crore in two instalments, given the non-formation of the MCD's standing committee had put all financial decisions on hold for over two years — but nothing happened. Every time the matter of this parking lot was tabled, it was postponed. Similar was the fate met by the other two parking projects. In Jangpura, where narrow lanes choke with vehicles and people's tempers flare daily over parking slots, residents say the murder outside the half-built lot was a tragic reminder of what's at stake. 'The MCD has been in deep slumber while people are paying the price,' Chaddha said.

Five new police stations approved for Pune: CM Fadnavis
Pune Aug 8 (UNI) Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis today announced the approval for five new police stations in Pune at Lohgaon, Laxminagar, Narhe, Manjri, and Yewalewadi. Additionally, permission will be granted for the recruitment of 1,000 personnel to strengthen law enforcement in the city. Speaking at the foundation stone laying ceremony of several police projects at Shivajinagar Police Headquarters, the Chief Minister stated that a major restructuring of the police force has been undertaken after 60 years. This includes the formation of new units like Narcotics and Forensics. He assured that the state government is committed to modernizing the police department. Speaking on occasion, Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar noted the growing responsibilities of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad police due to urban expansion. He informed that 1,100 crore has been reserved for police modernization. Over the past two years, Rs 40 crore has been allocated through the District Planning Committee, he said. He praised the newly inaugurated Chandan Nagar Police Station and stressed that police must ensure justice for citizens.
