Nissan Patrol Nismo is here to cheer up GT-R fans

Nissan's Nismo division is having a bit of a resurgence of late by tweaking the all-electric Ariya and in other markets, the Z sports car, too. As with the Ariya, it's time for another unlikely Nissan to get the performance sub-brand's treatment, say hello to the Patrol Nismo.
Unfortunately, as is the case with the V6-powered 370Z-successor, the Nissan Z Nismo, the Patrol Nismo won't come to the UK. Instead, sales will be solely restricted to the Middle East – somewhere the standard Patrol has become massively popular, thanks to its sand dune-busting off-road ability, reliability and tuneable, robust engines.
Nissan has extracted 70bhp more than the regular Patrol, despite the Nismo version using the same twin-turbocharged 3.5-litre V6 engine, which shares some elements with the twin-turbo 3.8-litre V6 found in the old R35-generation GT-R. In the Patrol Nismo there's now a whopping 495bhp and 700Nm of torque, a tune Nissan says was a 'direct result of extensive customer insights and feedback' from the Middle East. Performance figures haven't been announced yet, but the eight-seat Patrol Nismo is 200mm longer than a Range Rover and weighs a chunky 2,817kg, so despite that powerful engine, it's unlikely to give any GT-R owners a fright. That said, the nine-speed automatic transmission has been recalibrated with quicker shifts available through the steering wheel-mounted paddles. Skip advert Advertisement - Article continues below
The Patrol Nismo also receives a revised power steering system, a new Nismo-tuned electronic damper set-up and even a bespoke Nismo exhaust system that is engineered to 'deliver a deep, resonant note', according to Nissan.
While the Nissan Patrol isn't the most aerodynamic car around, Nismo has actually gone to the trouble of adding some body parts to improve the hot SUV in this area. The new fins and wings surrounding the lower body contribute to generating downforce, along with a new rear diffuser and spoiler. A revised mesh on the front grille provides better cooling to the radiator, while new intakes reduce brake disc temperatures by six per cent – just what you need in the Middle East.
Five exterior paint finishes are available: White Pearl, Grey Metallic, Blue Metallic, Black Pearl and a Nismo-exclusive Stealth Grey. Along with the typical red accents you find on Nismo cars, there are larger 22-inch forged aluminium wheels that are 23 per cent lighter than the standard car's rims. The Nismo's colour scheme extends to the interior, where you'll find red Nismo-branded sports seats, carbon-fibre 'inspired' surfaces, an aluminium accelerator and a red 12-o'clock marker on the steering wheel.

Saying 'I've got a Bigster' while swinging your car keys at a party sounds like a cheap gag, but cheap is good when it comes to family cars. This £25,215 Romanian-made SUV with a funny name manages to undercut better-known rivals such as the Nissan Qashqai, Kia Sportage and Ford Kuga. It's cheap to run too. We measured it at 60mpg for the 1.8-litre petrol hybrid (PHEV) version. That's pretty remarkable considering 30mpg was the best you could expect from a big SUV not long ago. • Read more expert reviews, news and insights on cars and motoring More about the fuel-sipping engine technology in a moment, but first here are the reasons you may want to test-drive a Bigster, apart from the fact that it's not another Chinese import. First is that the Bigster manages to feel roomier than rivals thanks to a bigger boot — 677 litres — and low window lines that give it an airy feel inside. The seats neatly split and fold so you can easily load a bike in the back, or lots of suitcases if you're doing the airport run, or even a stubby kayak. Rear-seat passengers — even tall ones — get enough legroom to avoid having their knees up round their chin, budget airline style. And unlike many cut-price SUVs, the Bigster doesn't look like a cheap knock-off. It's chunky enough to pass for a Jeep, albeit a soap rendering of one that's been left in the shower. There are skid plates front and rear to protect the underside, and the bumpers, wheel arches and sideskirts are made from a tough plastic called Starkle. Dacia boasts that Starkle is made from recycled materials possibly plastic dashboards from early Dacias. So far so good, but before signing on the dotted line, prospective customers will be asking themselves a deep and searching question: do they want the automotive equivalent of an 'own brand' supermarket item sitting on their drive? • VW Tayron review: seven seats and 600 miles on a single tank Founded in 1966 in the early days of the Ceausescu regime, the Dacia automobile company was the puppet state's answer to Russia's Lada, assembling cars for the masses under licence and offering slightly more luxurious versions for Communist Party officials. Dacia was successful enough to outlast both the Ceausescus and the Soviets. Renault saw the possibilities of a low-cost manufacturing outpost and bought it in 1999, launching the '5,000 euros car', the Dacia Logan, which attracted buyers in France, Italy and Germany. Other cheap-as-chips models followed, including the Sandero, the Jogger and the Duster. And now we have the Bigster, a cheaply produced SUV that's spacious, economical and not as ugly as some rivals. Unfortunately that's where it runs out of road. Dacia may have pretensions to be a grown-up car company but it's not there yet. The Bigster's interior looks like a leftover from the Soviet bloc era. It's so basic it's spartan, soaking up vibrancy with a joyless blend of grey plastics. The infotainment system bongs relentlessly at the smallest of transgressions and the seats don't pass the comfort test. By the end of a long journey you feel as though you've sat through a drawn-out politburo meeting. • Ford Puma Gen E review — Britain's bestselling car goes electric From the outside the Bigster looks tall but inside it's more like an estate car without the high-up driving position an SUV should have, and hence without the good visibility and feeling of security. It does share some of the characteristics of an SUV, notably soaking up speed humps and potholes and smoothing out ruts and bumps, but cornering and changing lanes aren't its strong points. Neither does it offer the kind of off-road proficiency you'd expect judging from its ruggedised looks. When you stretch the engine in low gear there's a droning sound, as though the car has been surrounded by angry bees. The cleverest bit is the powertrain on the 155 model, a system developed by Renault. That 60mpg figure is achieved by combining a 109bhp four-cylinder petrol engine, two electric motors, a 1.4 kWh battery and an automatic electric gearbox. It sips fuel while cruising and then, when you lift your foot off the throttle, it gets busy harvesting energy and feeding it back into the battery. The result is fewer fill-ups and a low vehicle excise duty band (band F, £390 a year). For a whisker over £25,000 for the Expression trim, you're clearly not going to get the hushed ride and pillowy suppleness of a premium German SUV, but the Bigster still has a way to go before it can match the refinement of, say, Skoda, another eastern European brand that started as the butt of jokes. • Porsche Cayenne review — a family hybrid with oomph The Bigster feels like a work in progress. No doubt Dacia is already developing an improved version. Having overcome the ticklish engineering challenges of building the Bigster's powertrain, it will soon get to grips with the problems of comfort and handling. In the meantime, for a similar price, it's worth checking out a used BMW X5 or a Porsche Cayenne. Neither match the Bigster's laudable fuel economy, but they will get you to your destination with a little more panache —and you'll have a better key fob to show off at parties.

Ford and Hyundai have succeeded in the compact truck segment — could Toyota be next? Small trucks have had a bumpy history in the States. However, lately, some automakers have found success with smaller-than-usual offerings, including Ford's Maverick and Hyundai's Santa Cruz, both of which are small pickups. The small truck segment could grow even more with the Bezos-backed Slate pickup, albeit its existence has become a lot more uncertain in the last few weeks as EV incentives go the way of Amelia Earhart. Then, we get to Toyota. Recent reports coming from Automotive News seem to indicate Toyota may still bring a tyke-sized truck to the US market, and it might not be the truck you expect it to be. 2025 Toyota Tacoma SR 2025 Ford Maverick Lariat A smaller Toyota truck would not share much with existing Toyota truck offerings While the current Toyota truck lineup in the US features solely body-on-frame construction, the prospective addition to the family would likely be based on the RAV4. Automotive News reports that Toyota Motor North America is still 'studying' a compact unibody-based pickup for the US market. They also confirm that the Corolla-based and electrified truck that Toyota is selling in Brazil is decidedly 'too small' for the US. Disappearing incentives/rebates and tariffs are also likely contributing factors as to why we won't get that smaller pickup. Toyota EPU Concept Toyota EPU Concept A truck built on the TNGA-K platform — which underpins the RAV4, Camry, Sienna, and others — means staying more than competitive with other small truck offerings. The Grand Highlander, a TNGA-K vehicle, can tow up to 5,000 pounds, which is 1,000 more than what the Maverick can muster. Considering even the three-row Grand Highlander is only two inches longer than the Maverick, the platform's size would be right on the money, too. Although at one point speculation pointed towards electrification, that plan — if there ever was one — is almost certainly scrapped in the face of loosening EPA regulations and dashed EV rebates. In the US, anyway, as Europe is a different story. Automotive News thinks 2028 would be the earliest we'd see the hypothetical truck. A new small truck fits Toyota's goals like a glove In related chats with Ted Ogawa, Toyota North America CEO, Automotive News uncovered additional pieces of the puzzle that might point towards a tinier truck alternative. 'When we talk about affordability, the key is the entry segment,' Ogawa says. 'So, in our lineup, that means Corolla and Corolla Cross.' That covers the small SUV and sedan segment; why not bring in an 'entry segment' truck to round things out? Another priority of Ogawa's — and, realistically, all automakers — is getting the most bang per buck at a platform level. 'Products must be refreshed, but the platform can be extended,' he tells AN. 'Toyota's basic policy is to build where we sell and buy where we build,' he starts. Later, we get a real-world example. 'In the case of the Corolla sedan, currently the internal-combustion version is built in Mississippi. But the hybrid is built in Japan, because that plant is more competitive for that product.' We can't imagine any market more ready to chomp at the bit for an affordable, small Toyota pickup than the US. The Slate hype — which may have, ultimately, been just that — was all the evidence we needed. 2024 Toyota Tacoma SR5 2025 Ford Maverick Final thoughts New Toyota truck rumors have persisted for years. Ford moved 48,041 Mavericks in just the second quarter of 2025. Arguably more importantly, a whopping 60% of Maverick buyers were new to the brand. Some of those customers inevitably migrated from Toyota, and that's got to hurt. We think the chances are high that Toyota wants to bring a competitor to the market.
