
A softer FY25 for APL
The company still benefited from a healthier fourth quarter—net sales rose double-digits quarter-on-quarter with volumes up amid Kharif sowing—yet this was not enough to offset the full-year drag. Gross profit slipped about 15 percent with the gross margin easing to 3.97 percent for FY25, reflecting muted inventory gains in a year of relatively stable international prices; that said, the fourth-quarter margin improved versus the same quarter last year on smaller inventory losses.
The cost and expense mix also moved up. Operating expenses were up by roughly 13 percent year-on-year, while finance costs increased 24 percent. Finance income fell about 25 percent year-on-year as interest rates declined. A brighter spot was the share of profit from associates, helped by a better refining environment in parts of the year that provided some cushion to the core operations.
Underlying volumes and market position explain much of the narrative shift. APL's total offtake is estimated at around 1.4 million tons for FY25, down 6 percent year-on-year, which pulled annual market share to about 8.8 percent from roughly 9.9 percent in FY24.
The weakness was concentrated in fuel oil (down nearly 48 percent year-on-year), while ex-fuel-oil volumes grew about 2 percent. This composition change and softer retail prices translated into lower inventory gains than the prior year's peaks, capping gross profitability.
APL's profits now clearly depend on interest income and inventory changes, while its falling market share shows how competitive the OMC sector is in a weak demand cycle.
Even so, it ends FY25 with a solid balance sheet, steady dividendsand better contributions from associates. Growth from LPG and EV-related projects is possible, but the near term will depend on demand recovery, price swings, and interest rates

KSE-100 closes above 147,000 for first time in history
The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) continued its record-breaking rally as its benchmark KSE-100 Index closed Tuesday's session above 147,000, another all-time high. The KSE-100 started the session with a strong buying spree, hitting an intra-day high of 147,976.98, followed by selling in the latter hours, which erased most of the earlier gains. However, at close, the benchmark index still managed to closed above 147,000 for first time in history. It settled at 147,005.32, up by 75.48 points or 0.05%. Positive momentum in BAFL, HBL, and SYS provided a combined uplift of 295 points, offering partial reprieve against broader market weakness. In contrast, significant downward pressure stemmed from FFC, MARI, OGDC, PSO, and BAHL, which together shaved off 527 points from the benchmark, brokerage house Topline Securities said in its post-market report. Analysts attributed the investor optimism to encouraging corporate earnings and reports of upcoming US investments in Pakistan's energy sector. In an informal discussion upon his return from the United States, Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said that Pakistan will soon receive encouraging news of substantial investments across various sectors from the US. The minister described the trade talks with the US as a major success for the country, noting that Pakistan is moving in the right direction and the results will be visible soon. Yousuf Weaving was the volume leader with 46.27 million shares, followed by Kohinoor Spining with 39.95 million shares, and Invest Bank with 34.39 million shares. Shares of 482 companies were traded on Tuesday, of which 208 registered an increase, 242 recorded a fall, while 32 remained unchanged.

Banking gains offset losses as PSX holds 147,000 level

Analysts noted that investors adopted a cautious stance amid mixed sentiment, selective buying, and profit-taking. Trading volumes recorded an uptick, supported by gains in banking stocks, while weakness in the fertiliser and energy sectors capped overall gains. Arif Habib Limited (AHL) Deputy Head of Trading Ali Najib said the KSE-100 index floated in both directions during the session before closing slightly positive, maintaining the key 147,000 level. 'Mixed sentiment was observed during trading hours, with investors opting for some switching and profit-taking,' he said. On the news front, Pakistan and US officials were finalising details of a trade deal, while Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb hinted at major US investments across various sectors. Meanwhile, Barrick Mining sought $3.5 billion from global lenders, including US-backed institutions, for the development of the Reko Diq copper and gold project. Among individual movers, Bank Alfalah, HBL, Systems Limited, Meezan Bank and National Foods added 417 points to the index on buying interest. Conversely, Fauji Fertiliser Company, Mari Petroleum, Oil and Gas Development Company, Pakistan State Oil and Bank AL Habib collectively lost 527 points. 'Going forward, progress on circular debt resolution could further fuel upward momentum. That said, some consolidation or a mild correction remains possible. In case of a pullback, 145,000 is expected to serve as the first support, followed by 143,000, while 150,000 stands as the next key resistance,' Najib added. Overall, trading volumes rose to 691.7 million shares from Monday's 611.2 million, while the traded value increased to Rs44.6 billion from Rs44 billion in the previous session. Shares of 482 companies were traded. Of these, 208 closed higher, 242 declined and 32 remained unchanged. Yousuf Weaving Mills was the volume leader with 46.3 million shares, rising by Rs1 to close at Rs6.09.
